Pentagon approves one Android device, still testing iOS

It's just one more sign that BlackBerry is falling fast. Now, the US Pentagon has approved a modified Android device for use in the Department of Defense and is testing iOS devices for use as well. BlackBerry had always been the top choice for all government departments because of security concerns on other platforms, but those days are over.
The Pentagon has approved just one single Android device though. The Dell Venue is the only device to make the cut, and even then, it must be running Android 2.2 and have the Android Market removed before it can be used by DoD staff. Additionally, any web browsing done on the device must be routed through the DoD proxy server.

HTC loses to Apple, several Android phones banned in the U.S.

The U.S. International Trade Commission finally issued its decision on a patent dispute between Apple and HTC. The determination states that several of the manufacturer's Android-based handsets will be banned from sale and import in the United States on April 12, 2012. HTC says not to worry though -- they have a plan.
HTC dodged the bullet for 8 of the 10 patent accusations made in April, but those last two were still good enough to land an injunction from the ITC. The determination blocks several of HTC's Android-based devices from import and outright bans the sale of those devices in the U.S. It is currently unknown what exact phones are subject to the injunction.

App Store generates 6 times more profit than Android Market

We all knew the App Store was the most profitable app catalog out there, but recent findings from Distimo show just how shockingly more cash it yields for developers. The top 200 apps in the App Store generate 6 times the profits of those in the Android Market. This makes it obvious why most programmers focus on iOS first and Android is usually only second-best.
The stats were all published by Distimo reporting about the January to November state of the application markets. Other interesting findings include the fact that Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace has outgrown the Nokia Ovi Store and the RIM BlackBerry App Worlds.

Apple Takes One Small Step Against HTC, One Giant Leap Against Android

Apple has been duking it out with Android manufacturers for the past couple years, and very few are safe. Samsung has already suffered some big losses with the banning of its Galaxy Tab in Germany and Australia. HTC, however, has remained mostly safe from Apple’s wrath.
In July the Taiwanese manufacturer had a close call, as Administrative Law Judge Carl Charneski ruled that HTC was infringing two of Apple’s proposed 10 patents. Of course, before any serious action could be taken the ITC needed to have a look, which is exactly what’s happened.

Apple's new iOS 5.0.1 build fixes SIM card errors for iPhone 4S

As we reported a few days ago, Apple has released a new build of iOS 5.0.1 specifically for iPhone 4S owners — but now we have official word from Apple as to what this update brings. Officially, this new build is designed to fix the pesky "No SIM card" errors that some users have experienced, though there's also new access to the iPhone's file system, which may enable loads of Siri hacking. Unfortunately, this isn't a delta update (which allows you to download only the updated parts of the OS over the air) — you'll need to back up your iPhone, download the software update, and do a full restore from scratch. Still, that's a small price to pay if your phone's SIM card has been acting up.

ITC bans U.S. import of multiple HTC devices in Apple patent ruling

A judge with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled Monday that HTC is guilty of infringing Apple’s patents in several devices. The ITC also ordered a ban on the import of several of HTC’s smartphones although it is unclear which models are affected. While fragmentation is a rare(r) problem on iOS there's still quite a few users rocking older versions on their devices. Unfortunately for them, ever since a recent update on the 16th they haven't been able to download any new apps from the App Store straight to their devices. While users of older iPod Touches and iPhones stuck on 3.1.3 by choice or incompatibility with newer OSes can still update the apps they already have and transfer software from iTunes on a computer, they can't buy or install new ones directly from the device. Last time we saw iOS 5.1 beta, it was pointing towards new Apple devices on the horizon and adding some new hooks into Siri for developers. iOS 5.1 beta 2 has been seeded to developers, and while it doesn't bring a lot new to the table, it does add a nice new feature for those of you who like to take lots of pictures.
The new feature in this version pertains to Photo Stream and one of the more annoying things with it. Photo Stream is part of iCloud and automatically keeps the last 1000 pictures you took. Unfortunately, there hasn't been any way to delete a single picture from your stream. Instead, you'd have to either kill the stream and start over, or leave the offending picture out for any...

Love to jailbreak but hate to tether every time you reboot? Then help could soon be at hand courtesy of hacker Pod2g. He just put out a video showing off a new exploit that continues to work on an iPod Touch even after it has been switched off and on. It appears to be running on iOS 5.0 rather than 5.0.1, so some downgrading might be called for. We don't know when it'll be released to the masses, or how long it'll last once Apple catches wind, but in the meantime there are of course various alternatives if you can stomach the risks and don't mind a bit of USB tomfoolery.

The Google+ app has been updated for iOS users, and the new version adds a couple of nice features, but ignores some of the known issues with the app. The update brings the Google+ app on iOS to version 1.0.7.2940, which doesn't really tell you anything.
The nice additions to the app are the ability to upload full resolution pictures from your device, and also a search option. We could make quips about Google taking its sweet time in adding search to Google+, but it seems like a played out thought at this point. Apple serves iOS 5.1 beta to developers

Yesterday afternoon Apple started distributing iOS 5.1 beta 1 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to registered developers. The new version of the OS offers a number of new developer tools for coders and addresses some bugs in music playback and other functions. Apple did not say whether or not iOS 5.1 finally fixes the battery life issues that some users have faced since upgrading to iOS 5 and were not completely resolved in iOS 5.0.1. The beta is available to registered developers now and will likely be made available as an update for all users in the near future, though Apple has not announced a timeframe for a public release just yet.

First game subscription hits iOS App Store

Until now, if you wanted to purchase an app on an iPad you had to pay a one-time purchase fee. Now, Apple is opening up its policies a bit to allow developers to create applications that charge monthly subscription fees for access to content. Big Fish Games is the first studio to gain approval from Apple to introduce an app subscription model, Bloomberg said. Big Fish Games will allow iPad owners to pay $4.99 per month for unlimited access to all of its games, and Apple takes a 30% cut of all revenues. “This is the first time that the technology has matched the business model,” Big Fish founder Paul Thelan said. Code strings in iOS 5 support the existence of the "J2" model iPad 3 claimed by Digitimes, according to 9to5Mac. The device is listed alongside familiar codenames for other Apple devices such as the iPhone 4. Apple has allegedly been considering two different designs as a successor to the iPad 2, the J2 being a more advanced device than the J1, also using different dimensions. The iOS 5 code also groups the J2 alongside other 3G-capable hardware.

Apple delays release of iOS 5.0.2 due to memory leaks?

Speculation that Apple would release iOS 5.0.2 this week has been replaced by a new report from German web site Macerkopf.de that the software release has been put on hold because of memory leaks in the code. The release was designed to improve the battery life on the Apple iPhone 4S, and to help fix some bugs on the phone and on Documents in the Cloud.
The battery fix is expected to give Apple iPhone 4S users 10 hours of active use. Apple's own information reveals that the handset should get 200 hours of standby time, up to 8 hours of 3G phone calls, as much as 6 hours of browsing time and 10 and 40 hours of video and audio playback respectively.
