iOS 5.1 increases OTA download limit to 50 MB

iOS 5.1 increases OTA download limit to 50 MB

Posted on Mar 13, 2012 by MG1

While the new features found in the iOS 5.1 update were fairly minimal, one that snuck under the radar was an increase to the maximum download file size over 3G/4G networks. The new version of iOS allows downloads of up to 50 MBs to be conducted over cellular networks, a fairly sizable increase from the previous 20MB limit.
Accounting for the increase is Apple’s new iPad, which is slated to launch on Friday. The new iPad features an HD Retina display, which will drive application file sizes up as developers build more intensive programs to support the new display and the Retina graphics the devices are capable of providing. Users of the AT&T, Verizon, and upcoming Sprint variants of the iPad...

Redsn0w jailbreaking tool updated to support iOS 5.1

Redsn0w jailbreaking tool updated to support iOS 5.1

Posted on Mar 09, 2012 by MG1

It hadn’t even been 24 hours since Apple released iOS 5.1, and the hacking community has already let loose the first tethered jailbreaking tool for the updated OS. According to Redmond Pie, the iPhone Dev Team has updated Redsn0w to allow users to jailbreak their iOS 5.1 devices. The jailbreak is tethered, however, so users will be required to connect their devices to a computer each time they are powered on. The exploit works for all devices running iOS 5.1 with the exception of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

Bug in iOS 5.0.1 allows bypassing of lock screen

Bug in iOS 5.0.1 allows bypassing of lock screen

Posted on Feb 23, 2012 by MG1

A flaw demonstrated in a YouTube video (seen below) demonstrates a difficult-to-access but reproducible bug in iOS 5.0.1 that can allow unauthorized users to bypass a lock screen on GSM-based iPhones and access recent contacts, make calls or even use FaceTime, iPhoneIslam reports. The hack revolves around trying to return a missed call while the sim card is taken out and re-inserted repeatedly (or in an area with no network coverage).
After multiple tries at returning a missed call without network coverage or the SIM, the iPhone will unlock itself to the phone application (and the SIM can be re-inserted or the phone taken to a location with network coverage). Once in the phone app, users can...

Twitter updated for iOS and Android

Twitter updated for iOS and Android

Posted on Feb 23, 2012 by MG1

witter would be happier if you used their official app, and to make their case more compelling they have released updates to their iOS and Android apps. Both versions have enabled swipe shortcuts (or “re-enabled”, as the case may be), and added an explicit confirmation dialog that makes sure you know that using the “Find Friends” feature means Twitter will be accessing your contact data.
The privacy issue likely arises from changes Apple made to their App Store policies after popular iOS app Path was found to be lifting users contact data without permission (something that was possible, and not unique to Path, until recently). The Android version of the app already asked for permission when ...

OS X Mountain Lion to skip USB option due to lack of need

OS X Mountain Lion to skip USB option due to lack of need

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Apple stated Friday that the launch of OS X Mountain Lion would be truly download-only. The Mac maker briefed Pocket-lint that it wouldn't stock versions preloaded on USB drives like it has with the current Lion release. Offering a physical option was an "interesting test," but the Mac App Store was "just fine" in practice for getting a copy, Apple said.
Not mentioned was whether or not users could still create their own disk image and load that on a USB drive or a disc. The options were never official and will likely still be an option given that the Lion installer was ultimately a package with a typical install image inside.

Mountain Lion ditches older Macs

Mountain Lion ditches older Macs

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Apple Mountain Lion will force many Mac models into legacy status, with no support for the upcoming OS X refresh for numerous pre-2007 MacBooks, MacBook Pros and desktops. The minimum hardware requirements of Mountain Lion - which we previewed comprehensively yesterday - apparently count out multiple models using integrated Intel GPUs, so TUAW‘s developer source says. That means, if you have a pre-unibody MacBook or the original MacBook Air, there’s no Mountain Lion for you.
Those notebooks using Intel GMA 950 or Intel GMA X3100 GPUs are apparently out of luck, but the list also includes the 8-core Mac Pro from 2007 and the mid-2007 Mac mini. However, if you have one of the following models ...

Spotify update looking to suck even more data on your iPhone

Spotify update looking to suck even more data on your iPhone

Posted on Feb 14, 2012 by MG1

Spotify for iOS has gotten a pretty nice update which adds a new option for song streaming, although it could be pretty costly if you have a lot limit on your monthly data plan for your iPhone or iPad. The new option adds the "Extreme" song quality option, which will deliver songs to you at a very respectable 320kbps. Of course, it is likely recommended that you not use the new streaming option on mobile data, but the potential for misuse is there by adventurous users.
This is an option that has been in existence in the desktop versions of Spotify, but this is the first time it has been seen on mobile. There has been no word as to whether or not the option will make it to other mobile platf...

There's no 'secret project' to port OS X to ARM, because it already exists

There's no 'secret project' to port OS X to ARM, because it already exists

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG1

You may have seen some reports doing the rounds today that a "secret project" was initiated at Apple to port the underlying guts of OS X (AKA Darwin) to ARM chips, and that those duties were handled by a then-intern named Tristan Schaap. The story goes that Schaap was part of a team tasked with manufacturing a build of Darwin for the Marvell MV88F6281 processor, and that upon completion of the project, he was hired on by Apple as a CoreOS engineer. While the latter part is accurate — Schaap does appear to be part of that team — the rest of it doesn't make sense on a number of levels, the most notable being that the essence of OS X (certainly much of its codebase) has already been adopted for...

WebOS will have 'huge advantages' over iOS and Android

WebOS will have 'huge advantages' over iOS and Android

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman says the company's soon-to-be open source WebOS software will eventually be better than both the Android and iOS platforms.
HP will launch the first version of the reimagined operating system in September this year after deciding to commit the storied software to the open source community.
Whitman said the result will prove to be superior to the 'closed' Apple iOS ecosystem and the undeniably 'fragmented' Android platform.
She also confirmed that the company will re-enter the tablet market, following the HP TouchPad debacle of 2011.
An open and closed case
In an interview with CRN, she said: "There is a clear vision of what we're trying to accomplish.
"There w...

iOS apps crash more than Android apps, study shows

iOS apps crash more than Android apps, study shows

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Apps running on Apple’s iOS devices crash more frequently than Android apps according to a new study preformed by mobile app monitoring company Crittercism. The data, which was collected between December 1st and 15th last year, spans 23 different versions of iOS and 33 different Android versions. The latest version of iOS (5.0.1) leads all others with 28.64% of all crashes, Forbes reports. The OS build is still relatively new, however, so much of the poor performance could be attributed to apps that haven’t yet been properly updated. Even still, there are older version of iOS that have surprisingly high percentages — iOS 4.2.1 was responsible for 12.64% of crashes, iOS 4.3.3 had 10.66% and i...

Passware claims FileVault 2 can be cracked in under an hour, sells you the software to prove it

Posted on Feb 03, 2012 by MG1

Lunch hours may never feel safe again. That is, if you have a Mac running Lion / FileVault 2, like leaving your computer around, or have unscrupulous colleagues. Data recovery firm Passware claims its "Forensic" edition software can decrypt files protected by FileVault 2 in just 40 minutes -- whether it's "letmein" or "H4x0rl8t0rK1tt3h" you chose to stand in its way. Using live-memory analysis over firewire, the encryption key can be accessed from FileVault's partition, gifting the pilferer privy access to keychain files and login data -- and therefore pretty much everything else. If you want to try this out for yourself, conveniently, Passware will sell you the software ($995 for a single u...

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has a whole team examining iOS and Android devices

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Those of you who have been following the news closely probably know that Thorsten Heins is now leading the company in distress that RIM currently is. He will be the one responsible for bringing RIM back on its feet after a very disappointing in terms of financials 2011. And to accomplish that feat, the proper execution of the PlayBook 2.0 platform, as well as the timely introduction of BlackBerry 10 smartphones, will be of utmost importance.
Of course, RIM will be facing strong competition along the way, the toughest rivals being iOS and Android. However, the Canadian tech company's newly appointed CEO is more than willing to familiarize himself with the competition's offerings, the main rea...

Apple's mobile web share reportedly slid in Q4 as Android took No.1 spot

Apple's mobile web share reportedly slid in Q4 as Android took No.1 spot

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Although Apple outsold all Android vendors in the fourth quarter, the Cupertino-based company’s share of mobile internet usage is reportedly beginning to slide. An analysis of last year’s Internet usage shows that in the United States, the proportion of Android mobile web visitors overtook Apple users by the end of the year, according to 51Degrees.mobi. The share of Apple’s iOS web traffic in December fell to 34.1%, while Android increased to 36.6%. In Europe, Apple remained ahead with 42.6% however, despite an increase in Android traffic that pushed the platform to 25.5% by the end of 2011. RIM’s BlackBerry devices remained stable in both regions with roughly 9% of all mobile web usage. “Th...
