Developer discovers iChat code in iOS

Developer discovers iChat code in iOS

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

iOS developer John Heaton has discovered a string of iOS code that suggests Apple is working on bringing its popular iChat client to iOS devices. We first heard this rumor back in September, but now there appears to be some proof to back it up. iChat, not to be confused with iMessage, allows Mac users to chat with one another across various messaging platforms including AIM, Google Talk and more. Currently, iOS users can only access iMessage through the text message app and can only place FaceTime calls using the address book or Phone application. A refreshed iMessage platform for iOS could merge all of these into one easy to use buddy list. While it is still unclear how exactly Apple plans ...

iOS 5.0.2 due next week, 5.1 to upgrade Siri, report claims

iOS 5.0.2 due next week, 5.1 to upgrade Siri, report claims

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

Apple is at work on not one but two updates to iOS 5, claims German site Macerkopf.de. iOS 5.0.2 will allegedly be out by the end of next week, and attempt to fix battery life problems that went unresolved by v5.0.1. Battery drain has been a recurring issue with iOS updates, although most devices are typically unaffected.
The other planned update is iOS 5.1. The firmware will reportedly make several upgrades to Siri, expanding its functions. Users should, for instance, be able to take a photo or record video using voice commands, as well as toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on or off. When v5.1 might go live however is unknown.

Google re-releases official iOS Gmail app hopefully for good this time

Google re-releases official iOS Gmail app hopefully for good this time

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

It seemed like only two weeks ago when Google decided to grace us with the presence of the official Gmail app for iOS. Well, that’s because it WAS two weeks ago when not only was the app made available, but approximately 11.7 minutes later, it was taken down by Google as it contained a crippling bug that would crash for users upon opening. Google has then fixed the bug, which was quite a doozy as the app took two weeks to be released again on the App Store, and is now available for your downloading pleasure.
Google has also revealed in the short time their Gmail app for iOS was made available, they received a lot of feedback from users to improve the Gmail on iOS experience, such as multipl...

Mac OS X sandbox security hole discovered, present in 10.5 and up

Mac OS X sandbox security hole discovered, present in 10.5 and up

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

Starting with version 10.5 of its desktop OS, Apple has allowed developers to voluntarily remove functionality from their applications using a set of pre-defined profiles — nixing network access, or the ability to write to the filesystem, for example — as a way to limit the damage an app could do should it be compromised in the wild. CoreLabs Research has discovered a way to route around these limits: using Apple Events, a given application can launch other applications that don't have the same restrictions in place. Imagine an application that's been specifically prohibited from accessing the Internet being able to launch a fully-functioning Safari, and you'll get the idea.

iOS battery issues still present admits Apple

iOS battery issues still present admits Apple

Posted on Nov 14, 2011 by MG1

In an uncharacteristic move, Apple has admitted that the latest iOS 5 update, version 5.0.1, hasn’t actually fixed the battery issues everyone was hoping it would.
An Apple statement sent to AllThingsD states that the company is still working on investigating the issues, suggesting that the update was more about bug fixing than giving iPhone users longer battery life.
“The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices. We continue to investigate a few remaining issues,” Apple said.
That’s likely to come as a blow if you were hoping the latest update was going to give you battery life that lasts into the night, rather th...

iOS 5 jailbreak: 5.0.1 hacked already

iOS 5 jailbreak: 5.0.1 hacked already

Posted on Nov 11, 2011 by MG1

While a proper, untethered iOS 5 jailbreak hasn’t been publicly released just yet, it’s a different story for those willing to put up with a tethered jailbreak. iOS 5 can be busted with Redsn0w, and now the latest firmware update, iOS 5.0.1, which is supposed to fix iPhone 4S battery life has been too.
Now there are a few caveats to this latest iOS 5 jailbreak: this does not work with dual-core iOS devices, so will only work with the iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G and original iPad, and not the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. A tethered jailbreak also requires your iPhone to be plugged into a PC running Redsnow every time you need to restart, which can be a serious inconvenience.

iOS 5.0.1 released early to select users in the AppleSeed program

iOS 5.0.1 released early to select users in the AppleSeed program

Posted on Nov 09, 2011 by MG1

As you probably are already aware, Apple has previously admitted that there are bugs affecting battery life in iOS 5 devices and is working on a fix for the next software release. Shortly after that confirmation, Apple began seeding a beta version of 5.0.1 to developers. The update reportedly contained a number of bug fixes, including ones that addressed the battery life issues.
A few end-users who complained about battery life and are a part of Apple’s AppleSeed program, which allows Apple to invite select customers to test pre-release software, have begun receiving the update as well. Participants in the program are being warned prior to updating their device that they will be unable to do...

HTC talks patent deals to fight Apple, Android 4.0 updates

HTC talks patent deals to fight Apple, Android 4.0 updates

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

HTC outlined some of its Android plans on Monday that included both the courtroom and its products. In a far-ranging briefing, the company's CEO Peter Chou told Reuters his company was "open-minded" to the prospect of buying patents to escalate its fight with Apple. There weren't any specific plans, he said.
The company has so far had a tough time in legal battles with Apple, being found in violation in one complaint and having other attempts shot down. It has only made small gestures towards improving its ability to contest Apple's claims, buying S3 after a patent win and borrowing from Google and Motorola for countersuits.
In extra comments, Chou added that the company would push more into...

Charlie Miller's latest iOS hack gets into the App Store, gets him tossed out

Charlie Miller's latest iOS hack gets into the App Store, gets him tossed out

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

This isn't the first brush Apple's iOS platform has had with apps that exploit security holes to run unsigned code, but according to the developer of InstaStock, this may be the first to get a security researcher booted from its developer program. Charlie Miller shared his discovery with Forbes earlier today, showing off an app which successfully made it through Apple's approval process despite packing the ability to download and run unsigned code. That could allow a malicious app to access user data or activate hardware features remotely. Apple pulled the app after the findings were published, and according to Miller, revoked his developer access shortly afterward for what seems to be a cle...

If you downloaded yesterdays iOS 5 beta you might want to check that iPhone / iPad / iPod touch for an OTA update. No word on what's new in 9A404 -- a mere two builds from yesterdays 9A402 -- but the updated build should still bring solace to those suffering from battery-drain issues. We're getting errors trying to download the developer notes, but we'll update if we find anything new or noteworthy.

UniBeast helps install Lion on your Hackintosh

UniBeast helps install Lion on your Hackintosh

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

The process of installing Mac OS X Lion on custom Hackintosh PCs has become much easier, thanks to a new utility called UniBeast that creates an all-in-one bootable USB drive, allowing users to install the OS from scratch instead of having to install Snow Leopard first and then upgrade.
To use the tool, you'll need a 8GB or larger flash drive, which UniBeast uses to create the bootable drive from your copy of Lion, whether it's from the App Store or on a thumb drive. After that, installation of Mac OS Lion should be a simple process, but you'll still need use another handy utility called MultiBeast to install drivers and get your Hackintosh up and running. Still, it's far more convenient (a...

Android said to have overtaken Apple in global mobile app downloads

Android said to have overtaken Apple in global mobile app downloads

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

Applications downloaded to Android devices in the second quarter surpassed the number apps downloaded from Apple’s iOS App Store. New data from market research and intelligence firm ABI Research shows that Android overtook iOS by a substantial margin in the June quarter, having been responsible for 44% of mobile app downloads around the world compared to iOS at 31%. ”Android’s open source strategy is the main factor for its success,” said ABI researcher Lim Shiyang in a statement. “Being a free platform has expanded the Android device install base, which in turn has driven growth in the number of third party multi-platform and mobile operator app stores. These conditions alone explain why An...

From Steve Jobs Biography: Android Is A Stolen Product

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 by MG1

Walter Isaacson biography on Steve Jobs will go on sale from Monday, but Associated Press got a copy of it before us. They posted some excerpts from the book which says that Steve Jobs felt that Android is a stolen product and he is willing to wage a war on it.
“I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”
“I don’t want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I won’t want it. I’ve got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that’s all I want.”
Bunch of lawsuits are going on ...

New Mac Trojan virus disables OS X anti-malware

New Mac Trojan virus disables OS X anti-malware

Posted on Oct 20, 2011 by MG1

According to internet and computer security research firm F-Secure, there’s a new Mac Trojan virus making the rounds. The virus has been labeled as OSX/Flashback.C and attacks by disabling the updater component of XProtect, which is OS X’s built-in anti-malware protection.
The virus first decrypts the paths of the XProtectUpdater plist files and unloads the XProtectUpdater daemon. It then overwrites the XProtectUpdater files with a blank character and also overwrites the plist and binary for the XProtectUpdater.
