This week we’ve got several sources speaking on what will be happening later this year when the two titans of console: Sony and Microsoft, go head to head with reveals of their next-generation gaming systems. One source speaking with vg247 this morning about the situation is noting that fans “should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.” Meanwhile our own source corroborates this possibility saying that the keynotes revealing these next two systems “may be happening on the same day.”

Used Xboxes can be hacked for credit card information, researcher says

Restoring an Xbox 360 console to factory settings before selling it apparently isn't enough to remove your personal information. In an interview with Kotaku, Drexel University researcher Ashley Podhradsky said that her team had successfully retrieved credit card data from a refurbished Xbox using simple modding tools. The software gave them access to the console's files and folders, letting them extract information that hadn't been wiped even by the Microsoft-authorized reseller. The process was published in the August 2011 Proceedings of the America's Conference on Information Systems.

Microsoft: No new Xbox hardware this year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX 360
Microsoft has confirmed that the successor to the Xbox 360 will not be announced at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo. “While we appreciate all the interest in our long-range plans for the future, we can confirm that there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon,” the company said in a statement to Kotaku on Thursday. “For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360-and it’s the best year ever for Xbox 360. The console is coming off its biggest year ever-a year in which Xbox outsold all other consoles worldwide.” The next-generation Xbox is rumored to be six times more powerful than the current Xbox 360. It has been reported that the console will be equipped with a GPU based on AT...

For several hours today, Xbox 360 players had a horrible sinking feeling in their gut when they look at their Xbox Live profile and saw that they had no achievements. For some, that meant it looked as though 6.5 long years of building up a horde of digital accomplishments had been wiped away in an instant. Luckily, the problem had been solved with no reported loss of data.

Current-gen gaming consoles in over half of US homes, digital purchases on the rise
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game Consoles
February may have seen a significant drop in US retail game sales, but a recent study by Nielsen shows that console ownership is on the rise. According to the report, at the end of last year 56 percent of US households had at least one of the three current-generation gaming consoles, up six percent from 2010. Time spent playing video games also increased, jumping up seven percent from the prior year, driven largely by massive gains by the iPad (the Wii, by comparison, saw a 22 percent drop in gaming time). The downward trend in retail game sales is also echoed by the report. According to Nielsen, the amount of money gamers spent didn't decline, but the way in which they spent it did, with th...

Valve Rumored To Be Working On "Steam Box" PC Console
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game Consoles
The raging battle of words between PC gamers and console gamers has never quite reached PC vs. Mac levels of animosity, but it's come close. Could those angry days be coming to an end? Probably not, but if anybody could convince the two camps to pick up their virtual arms in unison and start singing "Kumbaya," it's Valve -- and rumors floating around say that Valve is developing a console-esque box designed to let gamers get their Steam on in the living room.

There have been rumors that Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox console, which some term the Xbox 720, is codenamed “Durango.” The report first surfaced on Kotaku, which claimed to have heard the name from multiple sources close to the project. But today, a now-pulled Tweet from a Crytek game developer inadvertently confirmed the codename and revealed a secret developer summit underway in London for the new console.

PS Vita hits 1.2 million sales worldwide
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that worldwide sales of its PlayStation Vita handheld console have now exceeded 1.2 million units. In addition, more than 2 million pieces of software for the device have been sold, both at retail and on the PlayStation Network.
Of course, it will have to go some to top the sales figures of its predecessor, the PSP, which has sold more than 71 million units in just over seven years. But Sony can be reasonably proud of its initial results, considering that the PS Vita is a high-performing, high-quality piece of kit, launched during a global monetary recession.

Netflix denies BlackBerry devices, sticks with PS Vita

This week the folks at Netflix have made it clear that they have no current plans to release a Netflix app to BlackBerry. At the same time, the brand new portable gaming system known as the PS Vita, aka PlayStation Vita, has received a 1.0 version of the application in the PlayStation Store. This set of moves makes it clear which groups Netflix, a giant in the streaming video business today, has faith in for the near and extended future, and spells bad news for RIM whose struggling mobile platform BlackBerry is at its worst sales point in several years.

AMD Designing Next-Gen Playstation's GPU
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyAMD
Sony has begun working on its next-generation gaming console under the Playstation brand, and Forbes learned that it's none other than AMD designing its graphics processing unit (GPU). AMD is far from new to the game console GPU business, as its GPUs already drive graphics processing in Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii consoles. If launched anytime soon, the next-gen Playstation will create a rare moment where GPUs of all three major game console makers would be AMD-made. The current Playstation 3 console uses an NVIDIA GPU.

The collection includes a load of goodies including an extra controller, both physical and digital games, and a little free Xbox Live time for your trouble.
