Just the other day we saw a job post indicating that Microsoft was looking for someone to help work on a version of Skype for the web, and a new listing revolves around Skype too. The latest career opportunity will involve bringing Skype to the Xbox platform. Microsoft is looking to fill two roles related to the project, the first being a software developer, and the second an engineer manager.

NVIDIA's mobile GPUs to surpass Xbox 360 performance by 2014

NVIDIA sees its mobile system-on-a-chip graphics solutions surpassing the performance of the Xbox 360 in the coming years. A new graph the company shared with AnandTech highlights the performance of Tegra chips in comparison to those found within PCs and gaming consoles. The solid lines are estimated performance, while the dotted lines are trends. NVIDIA estimates that at some point in 2013, mobile graphic performance will match the Xbox 360 and by 2014, mobile performance will surpass that of the Xbox 360. Of course processor performance is hardly the only piece of the puzzle when it comes to gaming, and Microsoft and Sony will each have new consoles on the market in 2014.

Skype for Xbox revealed in job posting

It's no secret that Microsoft wants to add Skype to the majority of its portfolio and it seems that it will be coming to the Xbox 360 soon.
Since buying up Skype for a reported for $8.5 billion – or eight and half Instagrams in new money – Microsoft has been busy adding Skype to as many applications as possible, there's even talk that it will be baked straight into web browsers.
That rumour was days ago, though, and another has replaced it – Skype looks like it is coming to the Xbox.

PS Vita sales take a beating in Japan

Sony can’t be happy with recent sales of its new PS Vita portable console in Japan. Sales the portable gaming device have reached a record low in Japan. Executives at Sony have to be wincing right now with the Vita slipping to fourth place spot in hardware rankings. The Vita only sold 8250 units in Japan for the week.
Sony can at least smile at the fact that the PS Vita sold more units than the Nintendo Wii. The Wii sold and even more abysmal 6,837 units. Granted the Wii is years old now and will be replaced soon and the Vita is virtually brand-new. The top seller in the hardware rankings was the Nintendo 3DS.

Xbox 720 to be a 16-core powerhouse?

In what could well be the 720th rumour about the Xbox 720, it is thought the upcoming next-gen games console is set to utilise a 16-core CPU.
This is according to Xbox World, which has it on good authority that the Durango dev kits sent out last month – Durango being the Xbox 720's potential codename – are nowhere near as powerful as the finished product.
The final console is said to contain a 16-core IBM Power PC CPU with a graphics processor on par with AMD's Radeon HD 7000-series graphics cards.
It has been previously reported that AMD's kit will be inside both the Xbox 720 and the PS4.

The PlayStation Vita just received its first free-to-play game, a match-three puzzler called Treasures of Montezuma Blitz, and we were curious to see how it plays, but when we fired up a Vita to see just how friendly Sony's made the platform for freemium titles, we ran into a required update. Yes, Sony's updated the PlayStation Vita's firmware to version 1.67, only one week after the last, and just like version 1.66, it's a 97MB download. There's no changelog, so we're not sure what it does quite yet, but we can hazard a guess: perhaps Sony's trying to successfully release version 1.65 yet again. Sony yanks Vita firmware update after release

Sony has cited technical faults after pulling a recently released Playstation Vita update. The new firmware, version 1.65, was announced earlier this week, and Sony pushed it out to Vita devices shortly thereafter. However, anyone attempting to find the update now will be told there are no updates available. It’s odd considering this wasn’t a major update by any means.

Shortly after unleashing (and quickly pulling back) the PS Vita's v1.65 firmware update, Sony's rapidly rolling out a followup release. Version 1.66 brings with it a few UI tweaks, including tidbits such as the addition of a progress bar during app installs, notification alerts now only popping up for three seconds, plus the option to tap Retry / Cancel when running into troubles during location search. Games like Unit 13 and Gravity Daze will also see "functional improvements," while the Near app is getting a direct link to the PlayStation Store, making it easier to grab apps that other folks are toying with. Microsoft has questioned the validity of claims that credit card details can be retrieved even after an Xbox 360 has been reset to factory settings. A group of researchers has claimed that had managed to do just that with little more than basic modifying tools. Microsoft, which manufactures the Xbox 360, has come out guns blazing, strenuously denying that this is possible.

Sony releases (and pulls) PS Vita firmware v1.65

Sony has announced, released, and withdrawn the next firmware update for the PS Vita in the space of a day. Version 1.65 of the handheld console's software was set to make some minor usability tweaks including the ability to turn notifications on and off, extend the time before the system automatically goes to sleep from five to ten minutes (a welcome addition), and a caps lock function for the onscreen keyboard. Barring any last minute surprises, Nintendo will be the first of the big three console makers to come out with a next generation living room game system. Xbox 720 'as powerful' as two PCs - to ship in 2013

New information has come to light with regards to the Xbox 720, which hints that the console will be a power beast when it is released.
According to VG247, which has quoted sources close to the matter, the Xbox 720 is indeed a reality and it will be with us by Christmas 2013.
These multiple sources have gotten together and confirmed to the gaming site that the new console like two PCs taped together, with its graphics cards said to be the equivalent of AMD's 7000 series GPUs.
If this is the case, then AMD have managed to pull of a gaming double whammy as the PlayStation Orbis / PS4 is also said to have AMD architecture inside.

Durango Implements Always-On DRM, Multi-GPU

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console, codenamed "Durango", will implement an "always-on" DRM, according to a VG 24/7 report. Always-on is a stringent anti-piracy measure that's already in use with some PC game titles published by Ubisoft, which requires the players to be connected to the Internet when playing. Even as its proponents (read: game publishers only), claim increased sales, it faces strong opposition from the gaming community. The Christmas 2013 (tentative) launch of Durango rides on the assumption that fast, always-on broadband Internet will have proliferated to every living room.

Sony to announce new PlayStation 3 video service, but what is it?

As part of his usual rundown of the coming week's PSN content during the latest PlayStation Blogcast, Senior Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein teased listeners with a brief mention of a "cool new video service" that will be revealed for the PlayStation 3. "I can't tell you anything more about it right now," he says. "But it's really cool. We tried it out, and it's something I think you all will like. Another option for people, coming to PSN for your PS3." And just like that, Rubenstein plowed forward with the release list, offering no further hints of what we can expect from the announcement.
