Sony releases (and pulls) PS Vita firmware v1.65

Sony has announced, released, and withdrawn the next firmware update for the PS Vita in the space of a day. Version 1.65 of the handheld console's software was set to make some minor usability tweaks including the ability to turn notifications on and off, extend the time before the system automatically goes to sleep from five to ten minutes (a welcome addition), and a caps lock function for the onscreen keyboard. Vita owners had a very small window of opportunity in which to acquire these features, though, as Sony soon pulled the update due to "a technical fault" — reportedly an issue with adhoc wireless functionality in PSP games. Sony's mystery addition to the PlayStation 3's streaming video service lineup is a mystery no more: it's Amazon Instant Video, the online retailer's collection of an estimated 120,000 movies and shows, as well as Prime Instant Video, the roughly 17,000 streaming items included free with a $79 Amazon Prime subscription. That includes recent infusions of content from Discovery, Viacom, ABC-Disney, and Fox. Barring any last minute surprises, Nintendo will be the first of the big three console makers to come out with a next generation living room game system. It's the Wii U, and it will ship with HD graphics support, a funky new tablet controller, and updated guts that, in theory, should have developers excited. It is, after all, a new toy to play with. So why are a handful of developers dissing the Wii U?

As part of his usual rundown of the coming week's PSN content during the latest PlayStation Blogcast, Senior Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein teased listeners with a brief mention of a "cool new video service" that will be revealed for the PlayStation 3. "I can't tell you anything more about it right now," he says. "But it's really cool. We tried it out, and it's something I think you all will like. Another option for people, coming to PSN for your PS3." And just like that, Rubenstein plowed forward with the release list, offering no further hints of what we can expect from the announcement.

E3 to reveal PlayStation 4 ‘same day’ as Xbox 720

This week we’ve got several sources speaking on what will be happening later this year when the two titans of console: Sony and Microsoft, go head to head with reveals of their next-generation gaming systems. One source speaking with vg247 this morning about the situation is noting that fans “should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.” Meanwhile our own source corroborates this possibility saying that the keynotes revealing these next two systems “may be happening on the same day.”

Zen Studios will soon release a new pinball, though not for mobile platforms. Actually, Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles will be released on PlayStation Network so that includes select Sony smartphones and tablets. However, we also hope that other Android devices will get their pinball fix, as well.

PS Vita hits 1.2 million sales worldwide

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that worldwide sales of its PlayStation Vita handheld console have now exceeded 1.2 million units. In addition, more than 2 million pieces of software for the device have been sold, both at retail and on the PlayStation Network.
Of course, it will have to go some to top the sales figures of its predecessor, the PSP, which has sold more than 71 million units in just over seven years. But Sony can be reasonably proud of its initial results, considering that the PS Vita is a high-performing, high-quality piece of kit, launched during a global monetary recession.

Netflix denies BlackBerry devices, sticks with PS Vita

This week the folks at Netflix have made it clear that they have no current plans to release a Netflix app to BlackBerry. At the same time, the brand new portable gaming system known as the PS Vita, aka PlayStation Vita, has received a 1.0 version of the application in the PlayStation Store. This set of moves makes it clear which groups Netflix, a giant in the streaming video business today, has faith in for the near and extended future, and spells bad news for RIM whose struggling mobile platform BlackBerry is at its worst sales point in several years.

AMD Designing Next-Gen Playstation's GPU

Sony has begun working on its next-generation gaming console under the Playstation brand, and Forbes learned that it's none other than AMD designing its graphics processing unit (GPU). AMD is far from new to the game console GPU business, as its GPUs already drive graphics processing in Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii consoles. If launched anytime soon, the next-gen Playstation will create a rare moment where GPUs of all three major game console makers would be AMD-made. The current Playstation 3 console uses an NVIDIA GPU.

Sony PlayStation Vita Launches With New PS Store Apps

While the Sony PlayStation Vita had a soft launch last week with the limited, First Edition bundle ($350 for a 3G Vita, a carrying case, and a 4GB memory card), Sony's new gaming handheld officially launches today, and with that launch comes new additions to the device's digital download platform, the PS Store.
The Editors' Choice PlayStation Vita, so favored because of its excellent gaming abilities in spite of significant media playback issues, is now available from most retailers, with preorders (or, for the earlier adopters, major import markups and fees) unnecessary. The $250 Wi-Fi-only Vita is also on sale for the first time in the United States, along with the $300 non-bundle 3G/Wi-Fi...

Sony’s PS Vita has hit the mean streets of the UK, stores across the country opening at midnight to give eager gamers their chance to grab the next-gen portable, with US sales expected to begin within hours. Although early queues for the Vita had only garnered low numbers earlier this week, by midnight there were several hundred waiting outside retailer Game’s flagship London store, The Telegraph reports.
The store itself had been reskinned to mark the Sony console’s launch, with huge PS Vita branding across its windows. First in the queue was Zohaib Ali, who had been waiting since Sunday to pick up his Vita.

A few lucky people have already managed to get their hands on a PlayStation Vita, including us here at SlashGear, a handful of contest winners, people who work in the industry, etc. But the device doesn’t officially go on sale in the US until Wednesday, and in preparation for that Sony has made a bunch of last-minute tweaks to the Vita’s operating system so all the early adopters can take full advantage of what the device has to offer.

Sony reveals cross-play options for Vita and PS3

Sony has released details of cross-play offers which will allow users to play games on both PS3 and PS Vita at no additional cost.
The cross-play feature works with the PS Vita launch games MotorStorm RC, Hustle Kings, Top Darts and WipEout 2048.
For example, buyers of MotorStorm RC will be able to play it on Vita and PS3 without having to pay extra for the privilege.
Gaming between PS3 and Vita users will also be available. Four tracks in WipEout 2048 will be available for PS3 owners to race against Vita owners. WipEout HD and HD Fury DLC for PS3 will also get a free Vita download when they launch in the spring.

Sony has pumped $50m into its US launch campaign for the PS Vita, targeting hardcore gamers and internet addicts who “Never Stop Playing” as the company attempts to challenge the rise of smartphone gameplay. The promo spend is ”the largest platform launch in terms of marketing investment we’ve ever had” senior director for PlayStation handhelds John Koller told the NYTimes, with some of the cash going on getting the PS Vita into gamers’ hands for a test play.

The PS Vita Will Be Sony’s Last Portable

Sony’s PlayStation Vita will be launching soon. The portable will come with dual thumbsticks, a nice, big display, and a design that puts Nintendo’s 3DS to shame. And at a starting price of $249.99, it’s in the sweet spot for serious gamers who want a solid portable.
But just because the PlayStation Vita seems attractive, it doesn’t mean that it’ll be a winner. In fact, I’m a firm believer that the Vita will be Sony’s last portable, and the device that could very well put an end to the company’s entire mobile-gaming division.
