Posted on Feb 10, 2012 by MG1

The PlayStation Vita online store is, at least partly, up and running in the United States.
The console goes on sale in the US and Europe on February 22nd, but those lucky few who've imported a console from Japan can now access the download portal.
Joystiq reports that the store already features five titles as Sony looks to get the infrastructure in tip-top condition for the official launch later this month.
The titles available are: Hot Shots Golf, ModNation Racers, Super Stardust, Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Wipeout 2048.

PS3 v4.10 update is live with an improved browser, Sony Entertainment Network nameplate

The latest update for Sony's PlayStation 3 is live and available for download from via your PlayStation Netw...oops, Sony Entertainment Network account. While we get used to the new branding (nothing we could see in the system UI has actually changed at all), there's a few tweaks included in v4.10, like some sorely needed upgrades for the web browser and the ability to set the time and date automatically upon each sign-in. A scan of the forums reveals a few who noticed problems with Netflix post-update (which may or may not be update related, deleting Netflix data from the Game Data utility section and/or installing the newest version seems to fix the issue), however most are just seeing sig...

Posted on Feb 08, 2012 by MG3

Sony has released its latest firmware update for the PS3 taking it to version 4.10. The new update is referred to as being minor, but brings with it a change in the Terms of Service following the PlayStation Network (PSN) being folded into Sony’s larger Sony Entertainment Network. The move continues a trend towards Sony developing a more cohesive and integrated online platform that brings together its movie, music, TV and gaming content.

PlayStation Network accounts to be killed off

Filed in: Game ConsolesSony

Sony has revealed that all PlayStation Network accounts are to be rebranded this week, with the service to be folded into the Sony Entertainment Network.
The Sony Entertainment Network brand is big news for Sony as it is the first time the company has tried to bunch all of its online services under one moniker.
Usually Sony's PlayStation sector is immune to any changes the rest of the company is going through, but as of 8 February the PlayStation Network will become part of the Sony Entertainment Network.
Making SENce
Sony has issued a statement to all users of the PSN, explaining that the change will actually change nothing – it is just a lick of paint and a rename.
"This transition is base...

PlayStation Vita video recording lands with 1.60 software update

PlayStation Vita video recording lands with 1.60 software update

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

The PlayStation Vita has been received with much love here at Pocket-lint towers, with Sony's new handheld console being awarded the prestigious Hot Product tag. But even in our glowing review we noted that the lack of video recording on board was "weird".
But our prediction that a future update would come along to rectify this oversight was on the money, as Sony has announced the 1.60 software update will bring the functionality.
The update also adds a Map app feature to the front screen (looking very Google powered) which shows (on the 3G version, at least) your position and also gives the usual array of options such as route planning, satellite views and traffic info.
As well as the video...

PSA: PlayStation Network down for maintenance again from 6AM-midnight PT

PSA: PlayStation Network down for maintenance again from 6AM-midnight PT

Posted on Feb 03, 2012 by MG1

In what's becoming an increasingly regular occurrence, the PlayStation Network will be down for maintenance this Thursday. The downtime will last from 6AM til midnight PT, or 9AM-3AM Verge time (ET), which is five hours longer than the last period of outage. It won't affect online gaming if you make sure to sign in beforehand, but the PlayStation Store on all devices, account registration and management, Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services on PlayStation Home, and web-based login will all be inaccessible. As ever, Sony is staying mum on what behind-the-scenes enhancements the outage should allow, but it recommends following the PlayStation Twitter feed for updates.

PlayStation Vita games get discount on PSN

PlayStation Vita games get discount on PSN

Posted on Feb 01, 2012 by MG1

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation Vita games will be sold at a discounted price as downloads from the US PlayStation Store.
This system is already in operation in Japan, and with the US market going the same way it's likely that the UK PlayStation store will also be seeing discounted downloads.
The downloads will also be available at the same time as the physical media, so apart from fans of the collector's edition, it could spell the end to the launch day shop queue.
Games on physical media are hardly ever sold at full price, so the download discount may not be that significant, or an overall discount at all.

AT&T switches up Sony PlayStation Vita data plan options

AT&T switches up Sony PlayStation Vita data plan options

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

AT&T announced at CES 2012 that it would be carrying the Sony PlayStation Vita portable connected gaming device, and with that announcement, it said that customers would be able to choose between two data plans for it - a $15 per month plan that offered 250MB of data, and a $25 per month plan with 2GB of data. Now that AT&T has introduced new data plans for its smartphone and tablet devices, it has decided to change the offerings for the Vita as well. Gone is the $25 per month option, replaced by a 3GB, $30 per month plan. It appears that users will still be able to choose the smaller data package if they desire. The PlayStation Vita is due to hit AT&T's shelves on February 22 for $299.

Hack Allows PS3 Games to be Played Remotely on Vita

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

People are already doing hacking that involves the PS Vita, but the hacking is taking place on a PS3. Apparently PS3 firmware 3.55 sees the Vita as a mobile phone, and that somehow allows the portable to play games via its Remote Play feature.

PS Vita sales crash in post holiday slump

PS Vita sales crash in post holiday slump

Posted on Jan 19, 2012 by MG3

Sony's PS Vita hasn't been out in Japan very long, launching in December 2011, however after a promising start its sales have plummeted, dropping to 18,361 in week five.
Although you'd expect a steady decline in sales after any big launch the week five figures constitute a 95 per cent drop on the very decent week one figures of 324,859. This is a serious bit of free fall for the console and sullies the PS Vita's 500,000 units-sold milestone.

Sony PlayStation 3 still has 5 more years, says Hirai

Sony PlayStation 3 still has 5 more years, says Hirai

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG1

Sony exec Kazuo Hirai has once again said that the PlayStation 3 game console would live out its projected 10-year lifespan, staying on store shelves for another 5 years. However, rumors have been circling that the company has been working on a next-gen console, which could be unveiled at this year’s E3 conference.
Early last year, Hirai was asked a similar question and had reinforced the point that the PlayStation 3 would be here to stay until its end of life. Although not confirmed, it also doesn’t necessarily mean that the company would wait another five years to introduce the PlayStation 4. Recent reports suggest that Sony could do something similar to Nintendo, which plans to release th...

AT&T Playstation Vita 3G drops Feb 22; data pricing confirmed

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG1

This week Kuni Suzuki of Sony spoke at the AT&T Developer Conference on the Sony PlayStation Vita, the Sony Tablet P, and other items – but of course you know the Vita itself, on AT&T’s 3G network here and now, is the hero. The PlayStation Vita, Suzuki holding it aloft at the conference, will arrive on AT&T come February 22 2012; check out data plan pricing after the cut.
This device will have the biggest software lineup in the history of PlayStation – the biggest amount of apps available to the device as it launches, right out of the door, that is. You’ve got both 3G and wi-fi connectivity if you wish, and the rest of the party is there as well: party, microphone, and the lovely hardware la...

AT&T serving up wireless data for the PlayStation Vita

AT&T serving up wireless data for the PlayStation Vita

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

AT&T has announced it will be the exclusive U.S. wireless carrier for Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Vita release. AT&T will serve up two flavors of its data plans for the new 3G-enabled portable gaming unit – 250 MB for $14.99 and 2GB for $25. While that may seem steep, particularly if you factor in the already high hardware and software costs that are speculated to be the cause of the Vita’s poor sales overseas, the good news is both plans are month-to-month with no contract commitments required.
