PlayStation Vita sends out its first tweet, keeps it meta

Posted on Nov 24, 2011 by MG1

Sony's PlayStation Europe team couldn't restrain themselves this morning, sending out a tweet from an actual PS Vita console. It's the first one out in the Twitterverse, as far as they're aware, though its content isn't the most exciting in the world. It's about as self-descriptive as the Arnold Schwarzenegger DVD commentary for Total Recall:
As far as we're aware, this is the first tweet sent via PlayStation Vita.
Perhaps the Vita is just building up steam and its second and third efforts will be superb RT candidates. Still, it's good to see its social aspects getting tested out, though there's one added curiosity to this particular tweet. It's listed as coming "via monologo," a Twitter cli...

Sony has just announced via its PlayStation Network blog that the online gaming platform will be undergoing a routine scheduled maintenance tomorrow, November 17. However, this one isn’t quite as routine as the system will be offline for almost a full day starting from 8am to 10pm PST. Sony did not detail reasons for the long maintenance period nor what improvements to the platform, if any, can be expected afterwards.
Access to the service will be limited tomorrow during the maintenance. Users will not be able to access the PlayStation Store on the PS3 and PSP, the PlayStation Network Account Management, and the PlayStation Account Registration. Users will also not be able to sign in to the ...

Posted on Nov 09, 2011 by MG1

Sony released a major update today for its Music Unlimted service that streams music to PlayStation 3 consoles. The update brings an interface overhaul for the service on PS3, but more importantly, adds new music discovery capabilities as well as a “My Channels” feature that lets you customize your music listening experience.
The My Channels feature seems to take a page from Pandora, letting you create your own radio stations with songs selected based around your favorite artists. You type in the artist name and the station will automatically be populated with songs from that artist as well as similar songs from other artists. It’s also easier now to skip tracks by simply hitting the “dislik...

Sony: Hackers compromised 93,000 PSN, other online accounts

Posted on Oct 13, 2011 by MG1

Following a period of peace after weeks of cyberattacks launched against various Sony-run online networks, Sony has confirmed that hackers are once again targeting the company’s digital properties. The electronics giant said on Wednesday that it discovered a “large number” of sign-in attempts on its PlayStation Network, Sony Online Entertainment and Sony Entertainment Network between October 7th and the 10th. According to Sony, approximately 93,000 accounts were compromised when valid log-in details were verified during what appears to have been a brute force attack. Sony reveals new PSN hack attempt

Posted on Oct 12, 2011 by MG1

Sony has revealed details on a new security issue, with hackers supposedly testing a 93,000-strong list of leaked usernames and passwords to see if they’ll grant access to the PlayStation Network and other services. “The overwhelming majority” of the attacks, Sony’s Chief Information Security Officer Philip Reitinger confirmed on the company’s PlayStation blog, have failed, leading the company to suspect that the inaccurate list has come from a third-party source rather than Sony’s own servers. As well as the PSN, the Sony Entertainment Network and Sony Online Entertainment networks were targeted.

Sony promises to 'supersede' mobile gaming with Playstation Vita

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

Mobile gaming these days has become extremely popular when compared to dedicated gaming handhelds such as the Nintendo 3DS or the Playstation Portable mainly because everyone has a cell phone on them, so firing up a game on your device is as easy as tapping your screen. Sony believes there is still a market for dedicated gaming handhelds in a world that’s being consumed by gaming on mobile devices and has even gone as far as saying its Playstation Vita will supersede the mobile gaming market when it’s released.

PlayStation Network down again, restore coming soon

PlayStation Network down again, restore coming soon

Posted on Sep 22, 2011 by MG1

The PlayStation Network has experienced another outage today that began early this morning and is still ongoing at the moment. This certainly brings back bad memories of the last time the PSN went down, which lasted for over a month and involved plenty of compromised data. Luckily, this time it seems Sony has got it more under control.
Sony posted to its US and European Twitter accounts acknowledging that they are aware of the issue and are working on getting the platform restored. This quick response and communication is a nice improvement over the last time the network went down. The EU Twitter account has also been a bit more proactive in posting updates throughout the morning and has mos...

PS Vita is region-unlocked confirms Sony

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida revealed the spec tidbit on Twitter, though went on to caution against importing. Last week, it was revealed that the PS Vita would go on sale in Japan on December 17, though US availability has been pegged by retailers for only a couple of weeks after that.
“There are people who are interested in importing the Japanese version of PS Vita from outside Japan, but I personally do not recommend that” Yoshida suggested, going on to explain that “from my experience owning both US a...

Sony changes PSN terms to block class action lawsuits

Sony changes PSN terms to block class action lawsuits

Posted on Sep 19, 2011 by MG1

This is interesting. In a mandatory PlayStation 3 update, Sony has slipped a change to the terms of service for the PlayStation Network so that users who accept it are basically giving up the right to take part in a class-action lawsuit against them. The new clauses, termed "Binding Individual Arbitration," mandate that any Dispute Resolution Proceedings, whether in arbitration or court, will be conducted on an individual basis only.
Any outstanding class action lawsuits filed against Sony will still stand, including the class action suit filed in April over the PSN security breach. But it seems Sony is protecting itself against further litigation should it be hacked again in the future -- o...

Here in the SCE booth at Tokyo Game Show 2011, we’re offering experiences for even more users. Firstly, there are our three platforms, the PS3, PSP, and now, the PS Vita. We can provide a variety of experiences for people who play each platform. So we’ve set up a space where more people can try more titles.
The main attraction here is PS Vita. There are over 30 titles available on about 80 consoles. We think this is a very strong lineup of titles.
The main feature of PS Vita, which you’ll see as soon as you pick it up, is the 5-inch OLED display. Not only is the screen big, it’s also very clear, thanks to the OLED technology. Another feature is the variety of interfaces. For example, PS Vita...
