Nokia Lumia 800 beats the Apple iPhone 4 in navigation test for official Nokia video

Nokia Lumia 800 beats the Apple iPhone 4 in navigation test for official Nokia video

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

In an official Nokia video reminiscent of #SmokedByWindowsPhone, a Nokia Lumia 800 goes up against the Apple iPhone 4 in order to see which phone comes up with turn-by-turn directions faster to the London Eye. Using Nokia Drive, the Lumia is able to access the turn-by-turn directions in 15.24 seconds while the iPhone 4 user was still trying to access the information. And of course, this is a lopsided contest as without downloading a third party app, there will be no vocal directions or turn-by-turn navigation for the iPhone 4. With Nokia Drive, the Nokia Lumia 800 gives its user the choice between a male or female voice.

Huawei preparing its own Emotion UI to sit atop Android

Filed in: Cell PhonesHuawei

Huawei is trying to make a name for itself in the high-end smartphone market, and the company's just revealed the next phase of that plan. Unfortunately for lovers of pure vanilla Android, the next step appears to be a custom skin called Emotion UI. Details are scarce, but Chinese reporters got ahold of an invitation for a June 9th announce event, and Huawei CEO Yu Chengdong says that the new UI should be available as an upgrade starting in July. Here's hoping the interface is opt-in or opt-out: At first blush, one of the things we loved most about the Huawei Ascend P1 and Ascend D series was the ability to completely turn off their "3D Home" UI for a stock Android 4.0 experience, and we'd l...

Sony announces Xperia Go and Xperia acro S: waterproof and dual-core (video)

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Cell PhonesSony

If you were underwhelmed by the middling specs of Sony's past toughphones, you might want to take a look at the latest pair to join the 2012 Xperia family. First up, the Xperia go houses a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display with a dual-core 1GHz processor, powering the (unfortunately still) Gingerbread interface. Sony has reiterated that Android 4.0 will find its way to both new devices. The Xperia go also throws in a 5-megapixel camera and the same wet finger tracking seen on the Xperia Active, which will mean the phone can be steered during underwater adventures. You be able to pick from white, black and yellow color options when the phone arrives in Q3 this year.

BlackBerry Curve 9310 / 9320 turns up at FCC, fails to keep a low profile

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

FCC docs can, from time to time, turn up some welcome device surprises. Not so in this recent RIM filing, as we're treated to yet another in a long line of leaks for the company's Curve 9310 / 9320. The BB OS 7.1 handset, bearing the FCC IDs L6AREY20CW and L6ARFD30CW, has already made several appearances around the globe, preparing for a low-end market berth in Australia, India, Vietnam and the UK. So, aside from RF testing data indicating WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth radios, our familiarity with the phone's specs come from its prior in-the-wild jaunts. Should a single-core processor, 512MB RAM, 3.2-megapixel camera and hardware QWERTY tickle your mobile fancy, then by all means click on the sou...

Sony Xperia Ion hits FCC with AT&T LTE intact

Sony Xperia Ion hits FCC with AT&T LTE intact

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

The wait for the Sony Xperia Ion in the US has been a long one, but that summer release feels considerably closer now that the Android flagship has swung by the FCC. As we'd hope, the Ion is passing through in full AT&T regalia, carrying the 700MHz and 1,700MHz 4G LTE bands it needs to run on Big Blue -- albeit with a legacy Sony Ericsson label. Along with the expected 850MHz and 1,900MHz HSPA 3G frequencies, we're also seeing an odd instance of 1,700MHz 3G that would normally be reserved for T-Mobile. Given that there isn't matching 2,100MHz support, we're more inclined to see the 1,700MHz block as related to AT&T spectrum refarming or other, more practical purposes than as a ghost of attem...

Despite recent rumors to the contrary, Nokia won't be releasing waterproof Lumia- or PureView-series handsets anytime soon, The Verge has learned. The indications came from Nokia VP for Western Europe, Conor Pierce, during a presentation on Nokia's research work. He simply mentioned work of a waterproof coating being done in-house, similar to that found in Motorola's Droid Razr and Panasonic's Eluga.
