Games were most downloaded and most purchased mobile apps in Q2, Nielsen finds
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Developers looking to attack mobile app segments where they might have the best chance of scoring big with smartphone users would be well served to take notice of Nielsen’s latest findings. The market research firm on Wednesday published some findings from its Mobile Insights and Mobile Apps Playbook reports for the second quarter of 2011, and “Games” was once again the most popular app category. In the second quarter, 64% of app downloaders — smartphone users surveyed who had downloaded an app within the past 30 days — reported having downloaded at least one game over the past 30 days, just ahead of weather apps at 60% and social networking apps at 56%. What’s more, a whopping 93% of app do...

Apple iPhone 5 be thinner, lighter than current model according to WSJ
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
The Wall Street Journal is singing a new tune Wednesday morning, reaffirming parts of an earlier BGR report suggesting that Apple is preparing to release a redesigned iPhone 5 later this year. Citing anonymous sources in Apple’s supply chain, the paper reports this morning that Apple has placed component orders with key suppliers for fifth-generation iPhone parts. As has already been widely reported, Apple’s next iPhone is said to feature an 8-megapixel camera and Qualcomm radios. The report veers away from the consensus in suggesting that Apple’s next iPhone will not share its design with the current iPhone 4, however, and will instead be thinner and lighter than the current model. BGR repo...

Another Galaxy S II passes through the FCC, possibly rockin' a Tegra 2
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S II
What we have here appears to be some variation of the Samsung Galaxy S II, with support for 850MHz and 1900MHz GSM frequencies, making its way through the FCC. Now, we know what you're thinking, "didn't we already see an AT&T ready S II?" Yep, but this one sports a different model number -- GT-I9103, and you know where we've seen that before? Those mysterious Tegra 2-equipped Galaxy S II benchmarks. The rumblings of Sammy's flagship handset coming in two versions, one rocking NVIDIA's mobile chip, aren't without precedent -- Exynos is still fairly young silicon and this could be a way to boost supplies (as we put it, in the most politically correct terms possible) "outside its critical marke...

HTC Marvel Hits FCC, Heading For T-Mobile
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCT-MobileWildfire S T-Mobile
Back in May, a leaked T-Mobile roadmap revealed a wide variety of delicious smartphones waiting to come out of the oven. One of the handsets getting close to making its entry is the HTC Marvel that’s slated for a July 15th launch. The handset has just passed through the FCC, indicating it should be right on time.
The HTC Marvel is essentially the T-Mobile version of the HTC Wildfire S for which we did a full review back in April. The FCC documents label the handset as only PG76240 and indicate that the device will sport T-Mobile’s GSM and WCDMA bands.

Samsung Galaxy S 2 with Windows Phone 7 incoming?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungMicrosoftWindows Phone 7Galaxy S II
The Samsung Galaxy S 2 is selling like hotcakes and is, by all accounts including our Samsung Galaxy S 2 review, a pretty hot bit of hardware. Now it seems like Samsung could be about to try and use that success as a springboard for a new Windows Phone 7 device.
Clues that the Samsung Galaxy S 2 could be reborn in Windows Phone 7 form have popped up in device testing logs. Read on for the intriguing evidence that the successor to the Samsung Omnia 7 may be from a different galaxy…
The first clue that a Samsung Galaxy S2-style phone with Windows Phone 7 onboard is being toyed with comes from the Bluetooth SIG. It shows a device with the model number SGH-i937 in its listings. That’s a leap of ...

Nokia X7 gets UK release with Three
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAX7
The Nokia X7, the second phone on the UK market with the Symbian Anna update, is finally being offered through a retailer with Three.
The new handset comes with a 4-inch OLED screen, Bluetooth 3.0 and USB-on-the-go to allow connection of hard drives and USB sticks directly to the phone (although you'll need to buy a separate lead for this as none will be provided in the box).
The new Symbian Anna update, which will be coming to other Nokia phones imminently, offers faster web browsing and better keyboard operation - it might not bring the phones up to iPhone levels of user experience, but it's certainly a step in the right direction for new users.

HTC Status and LG Thrill 4G To Hit AT&T This Month?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGHTCAT&TThrill 4GStatus
Sometime in the last year or so, the carriers picked up a bad new habit. They’d announce that they were getting a phone, talk all about the specs… but then give no indication of when it might actually be available. Maybe it’s because they don’t like making promises they’re not sure they can keep; maybe it’s because they’re hoping that a second announcement — the one containing the pricing/availability details — will stir up a second whirlwind of press. Whatever the motivation, it’s terribly annoying.
Take the Status and the glasses-free 3D LG Thrill for example. The Status just went official last week. The Thrill 4G, however, went official way back in March — and yet, there’s still no offici...

Samsung preps first Windows Phone "Mango" device
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Samsung’s first Windows Phone “Mango” device has been listed by standards body Bluetooth SIG as the South Korean electronics giant prepares to lead the pack when Mango phones begin launching this fall. Details surrounding the smartphone are not available for the time being, though the model number SGH-i937 has already been confirmed as the Windows Phone-touting successor to the Samsung Focus, which carried the model number SGH-i917. WMPoweruser.com speculates that the device could feature a case and specs similar to the Galaxy S II — Samsung’s fastest-selling smartphone of all time — but that speculation appears baseless. It looks like Samsung will have stiff competition from Nokia when Mang...

Motorola Droid 3 Gets Leaked From 360 Angles
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaDROID 3
Verizon has yet to officially announce Motorola’s Droid 3, but we expect to see that announcement cross the wires in a matter of hours. In fact, we reported along with other sites that the phone should hit shelves on July 14, with pre-order starting July 7. In other words, an official Droid 3 page posting should go down right about now.
When big red finally does get around to posting the Droid 3 page, we’ll get to enjoy the phone from all 360 viewing angles. But until then, the nice folks over at Droid-Life miraculously snagged 360-degree pics a bit early, which we are more than happy to pass along.

HP Pre 3 listed at 399 GBP for Europe
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHPPre3
HP's latest hope for the webOS platform on smartphones, the Pre 3, has been listed on its European web store for the cool price of 399 GBP (US$643) SIM-free. Availability is showing as out-of-stock, and unfortunately prospective owners cannot place a pre-order at this point. A release is hopefully not that far off, though, since the price has been set for the smartphone. As a refresher, the Pre 3 sports a 1.4GHz processor and a 3.6-inch, WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) touchscreen. HP had originally promised the device would hit shelves this summer.

HTC Sensation 4G heads to Canada, available for $150 on Bell
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCSensation 4G
Do our friends across the border have a hankerin' for a top-of-the-line Android phone? Consider your desires addressed. Not only is Bell coming out with the Samsung Galaxy S II in the near future, the HTC Sensation 4G is now officially in stock for $150 on a three-year commitment. The "4G" moniker remains since the device is compatible with Bell's 14.4 Mbps HSPA+ network. Aside from this, however, we can expect the same goodies seen in the US version: a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, Gingerbread, 4.3-inch qHD display with 960 x 540 resolution, and an 8 megapixel camera (just to name a few). This does unfortunately mean that you'll now have two very capable "superphones" to choose from -- although the...

Another Chinese company to develop its own OS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
According to the Wall Street Journal, Chinese company Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is planning to release its own operating system through its Alibaba Cloud Computing unit. This follows news from last week that Baidu, the dominant search provider in China, would be developing its own OS as well.
Alibaba's OS is said to be entirely cloud-based, with users accessing applications on a remote server instead of installing them directly to their phones. There weren't many other details provided, but Alibaba intends to launch the OS in the third quarter of this year. The initial plan is to target the Chinese market, though representatives have said that nothing is preventing them from branching outsi...

Nokia drops prices on smartphones to rejuvenate sales, Nokia N8 price slashed by 15%
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN8
Nokia has slashed the prices of smartphones in Europe in an attempt to rejuvenate weak sales of its high-end devices, according to industry insiders quoted by Reuters. One of the insiders noted that Nokia's current flagship, the Nokia N8, will see its price drop by 15%. The same price cut will also come to the multimedia-centric C7 and the business-oriented E6.
The prices of other Nokia devices will also be decreased, but the biggest drop will be for those high-end handsets.
"There are no very big cuts per model, but the scale -- across the portfolio -- is unseen for a very, very long time," an employee of a European telecoms operator added. But Nokia denied the price cut to be something ou...

LightSquared gets $265 million shot in the arm
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
LightSquared has announced a new round of funding for its upcoming 4G LTE network that totals $265 million. According to the announcement, the funds came from both existing investors and new investors to the company. LightSquared has raised $2.3 billion in funding over the last year. Apparently the company's ongoing battle with the GPS industry has not scared investors away, and LightSquared's promised fixes for any interference issues seem to be enough for investment firms to continue to put money into the company.
