Sony Ericsson Xperia arc now available unlocked in the U.S.

Sony Ericsson Xperia arc now available unlocked in the U.S.

Posted on Jul 08, 2011 by MG1

U.S. residents have had to sit idly by as one of the best Sony Ericsson smartphones in recent memory, the Xperia arc, made its tour around other parts of the world. It looks like the wait has come to an end, as an unlocked version of the Xperia arc is now listed in Sony Ericsson's U.S. store.
This particular variant features 3G compatibility on the 800/850/1900/2100MHz bands, meaning you can get the most out of it on AT&T's network. Using it on T-Mobile will slow you down to 2G, EDGE speeds though, since it does not support the 1700MHz AWS band.

Sony Ericsson txt pro examined by FCC, 3G lovers shunned

Sony Ericsson txt pro examined by FCC, 3G lovers shunned

Posted on Jul 08, 2011 by MG1

Making it through the gauntlet of the FCC is often a very secretive process, since most manufacturers choose to keep the majority of details about a phone confidential. When that device in question's already been the subject of a large Facebook campaign, however, there's no point in staying quiet. This is the case of the Sony Ericsson txt pro (SK15a), a messaging device that came through the FCC's labs with the photos unobscured. The handset appears to be designed primarily for texters and -- given the lack of North American 3G or 4G support -- nobody else on this side of the pond. While the txt pro has GSM 850 / 1900 bands to make it compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile, it's likely geared for...

Bad news root crew, the DROID 3 has a locked bootloader

Bad news root crew, the DROID 3 has a locked bootloader

Posted on Jul 08, 2011 by MG1

It seems like an inevitable outcome that we should have expected once we learned that the DROID 3 would feature an OMAP processor, but it has been confirmed that the DROID 3 has a locked bootloader. The news was confirmed on the Motorola Support Forums this morning by a forums manager named Matt.
Motorola has said that it would be offering software updates to unlock bootloaders starting late in 2011. Unfortunately, it's barely mid-2011 right now, so change is still on the horizon for all except Atrix users, who apparently should have unlocked bootloaders with the Gingerbread update.
Since the DROID 3 is packing an OMAP processor, that means it most likely has eFuse built in which will bric...

LG lowers cellphone sales target for 2011 by whopping 24%

The first half of the year is behind us, and while some cellphone manufacturers have been making piles of money selling handsets in epic proportions, it turns out that others have not been doing so well. LG has just announced that it is dropping its cellphone sales goal for 2011 by a whopping 24%, which means that the Korean company is now aiming at shipping a total of only 114 million handsets by the year's end instead of the previously anticipated 150 million.
The main reason behind LG's pessimistic outlook is that its smartphones are not selling as well as the company expected. According to estimates, About 10 million LG smartphones were shipped during the first half of 2011, which is abo...

Nokia N9 might be supported, after all, with several MeeGo updates heading its way

Nokia N9 might be supported, after all, with several MeeGo updates heading its way

Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9

Klas Ström, Nokia's Head of Portfolio Management, tweeted that the Nokia N9 will be supported in the next years, with several software updates for MeeGo in the pipeline.
Not that we were expecting anything else, despite CEO Stephen Elop's claims to the contrary. We just couldn't envision Espoo not maintaining what could turn out a pretty popular niche handset like the Nokia N9, considering all the hopes and efforts Nokia has poured into MeeGo.
Granted, Mr Elop is trying to turn the focus of attention away from Symbian and MeeGo, and towards the upcoming Nokia Windows Phones, so he largely talks about that, but other people at Nokia seem committed to maintain MeeGo, as well as work on the upc...

Actually, it's the thinnest full QWERTY smartphone, according to Verizon. In addition, the new handset brags with 27% faster multitasking performance over the DROID 2 Global thanks to its 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP chip. The DROID 3 is a global de...

Spotify confirms US launch 'soon'

Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by MG1

Spotify after years of promises confirmed through a sign-up page on Wednesday that its service would be coming to the US "soon." While still shy on details, the music service is now taking e-mail addresses for invitations. The company claims "any track, any time, anywhere" for "free," although it's presumed it will have the same recently limited free service as in Europe.
Most expect Spotify to take its service live in the US sometime this month. It may cost $10 per month for full Premium access with unlimited streaming and access to the Android, iOS, and eventually Windows Phone apps. A launch may come hand-in-hand with Facebook integration.
The service is one of the most popular music prov...

HP Pre 3 set for August 31 release: bad news for webOS

Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesHPPre3

The big brother to the HP Veer, the Pre 3, is now slated for an August 31 release date according to Play.com. While this still falls into the “summer season” promised by HP, previous reports suggested we’d see the webOS flagship by mid-July. Without the Pre 3, touch to share with the HP TouchPad remains a pipe dream unless you own the Veer. Will a late August release of the HP Pre 3 spell disaster for webOS?

Yesterday HP’s webOS boss Jon Rubinstein sent out an internal letter of support to both the TouchPad engineers and the webOS 3.0 development team. In the letter he reminds that, “it’s a marathon, not a sprint” when it comes to refining webOS and the TouchPad. Unfortunately history has p...

Motorola DROID Bionic makes appearance in Best Buy ad

Originally shown to the public at the CES, Motorola pulled the original DROID Bionic and replaced it with a whole new model and a delayed launch. The specs of the device have been rumored to be all over the place. We had told you about a tweet from Motorola th...

First OTA update hits non-carrier branded HTC Sensation units in Europe

Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by MG1

Needless to say, there are some happy HTC Sensation owners in Europe that are exuberant about the handset's loveliness, but for those affected by the stifling problem of lag with its performance, they’re going to be glad to see hear that some owners are seeing better results after installing a new software update.
Although it doesn’t necessarily bring along anything dramatic, this 27MB over-the-air update for non-carrier branded HTC Sensation units in Europe is being pushed out as we speak. Naturally, it brings the handset up to software version 1.35.401.1 and carries along some additional bug fixes with it. Moreover, we’re sure that handset owners are more interested about seeing an unlock...

Sony's quartet of high-end Android smartphones including the Xperia arc, play, neo and pro might just have gotten updated to Android 2.3.3, but the engineers over at SE are already testing and working on delivering the latest version of Android Gingerbread, 2.3.4, according to an unspecified source quoted by SE-centric Semcblog. The update will bring bug fixes, but it will also patch some security holes and add new functionalities like Sony's audio filtering xLOUD technology to the handsets. It's expected to roll out widely in October.
The latest Gingerbread is not coming to earlier models like the X10 mini, X10 mini pro or the X8, but we already know that an unspecified version of Gingerbre...
