Motorola XT760 and MT680 appear courtesy of Chinese regulator TENAA

Posted on Mar 28, 2012 by MG1

A couple of new Android handsets from Motorola have appeared on the Chinese regulator TENAA's website, and Blog of Mobile has managed to uncover a number of specs for the devices. First up, the Motorola XT760 (pictured on the left) runs Android 2.3.5 atop a dual-core 1GHz processor, with a 960 x 540 TFT LCD display, and 8-megapixel rear camera. The images also show a front-facing webcam, but no details are offered on that. The XT760 is said to operate on standard WCDMA/GSM bands, meaning that while it could be seen outside of China, it's almost certainly headed to China Unicom.

Google uses the power of open-source to create exploit fix for Android

Google uses the power of open-source to create exploit fix for Android

Posted on Mar 28, 2012 by MG1

Italian researchers recently uncovered a pretty big exploit that affected all versions of the Android system, which allowed for Denial of Service (DoS) attacks to be carried out. The researchers also created a fix for said exploit, and now Google is going to use that fix in an upcoming patch for Android.
The research behind the discovery and patch were posted on a University of Genoa website run by the researchers involved: Alessandro Armando, “Security Trust” Research Unit chief and coordinator of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Genoa, Alessio Merlo of Telematic University E-Campus, Professor. Mauro Migliardi, a coordinator at the University of Padova and Luke V...

Chrome OS 'Daisy' device running on ARM processor revealed by Google Code

Chrome OS 'Daisy' device running on ARM processor revealed by Google Code

Posted on Mar 28, 2012 by MG1

Google's Chrome OS is currently only available on Intel Atom-powered Chromebooks like Samsung's Series 5 or Acer's AC700, but testing notes on the project's Google Code issue tracker suggest that this might be about to change. A new Chrome OS device codenamed Daisy has appeared on the site, with references to Samsung's Exynos 5250 processor — an ARM Cortex A15 dual-core SoC clocked at 2GHz that was first announced back in November.
There are also several mentions of ethernet on the Daisy, an unusual inclusion for a Chrome OS device which have relied on either mobile networks or Wi-Fi until now. It's not clear from the listings what form factor the Daisy device will take, or even whether it's...

Google I/O tickets start landing on eBay - for $4000

Google I/O tickets start landing on eBay - for $4000

We know that there are a lot of people who missed out on Google I/O registration this year, as the whole conference sold out in under 30 minutes. Well, if you’re still desperate to go and you have a nice chunk of money to spare, you can still grab a ticket. For $4,000..
With Google’s I/O conference growing more popular by the year, it wasn’t at all surprising to see this kind of record sell out. That said, we’re sure there were a lot of developers who were looking forward to this conference missed the chance to get in on the action, even though Google did expand the attendance capacity. Some of those tickets were purchased for nothing but reselling them at an incredibly inflated price. Kind ...

Samsung ships five million Galaxy Notes in just five months

Samsung ships five million Galaxy Notes in just five months

Posted on Mar 28, 2012 by MG1

Five is an important number for Samsung's Galaxy Note. It has a 5.3-inch screen and now, just five months since it debuted Samsung has announced it's shipped five million units (the one million mark was crossed right around the end of December). That's certainly long enough for you to decide if you're in love with its super-sized frame or the accompanying S-Pen stylus, but unfortunately it has not been quite enough time for the highly-anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich software update to be released. While the world waits for the Premium Suite of apps and Android 4.0, let's think back to all the good times we had, including its initial unveiling, our original review and finally its arrival in th...

T-Mobile sued over NFC patent which may not cover NFC

T-Mobile sued over NFC patent which may not cover NFC

Posted on Mar 28, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: T-Mobile

T-Mobile USA was sued today by a company called On Track Innovations, which claims that T-Mobile's smartphones with NFC technology infringe one of its patents. OTI's been around since 1990 and has a long history developing smart card systems, which is why the single patent in the lawsuit may not be quite so easy to win with in court: it narrowly covers a "data transaction card" with fixed contacts on it in addition to working in a contactless mode. That doesn't appear to describe either the Samsung Galaxy S II or the Nexus S — T-Mobile's only NFC smartphones — but we have yet to see OTI's complaint and how the company's lawyers have made the argument. Then again, OTI says it's pursuing an "o...

TiVo sues Motorola and Time Warner over DVR patents

TiVo sues Motorola and Time Warner over DVR patents

Posted on Mar 28, 2012 by MG1

Motorola is a big provider of DVR systems to cable companies, which is where Time Warner comes into the picture. The three patents include Patent #6,233,389- “Multimedia time warping system,” Patent #7,529,465- “System for time shifting multimedia content streams,” and Patent #6,792,195- “Method and apparatus implementing random access and time-based functions on a continuous stream of formatted digital data.” I’m certainly no patent savant, but those sound key to DVR functionality.
It’s not clear when the case will be heard by courts. I hope suits like this don’t eventually mean the DVRs most of us use from cable and satellite providers lose functionality. I’d wager if it comes down to it M...

Is Google launching a blog commenting system?

Google is preparing to launch a blog commenting system similar to the one offered by Facebook according to Saudi Arabian site Tech-WD, which jibes with the rumors that first surfaced in WebProNews in October last year. The system was supposedly discussed along with a number of other unannounced features at the G-Saudi Arabia Google conference in Jeddah, and would tie in with the rest of your Google account. Comments would be indexed by Google Social, the same service that crawls tweets and Facebook for Google's search service.

LulzSec claims hack of Military Singles dating website, dumps over 170,000 account credentials

Posted on Mar 28, 2012 by MG1

LulzSec — an Anonymous offshoot known for its hacking hijinks — has apparently been resurrected, claiming responsibility for a hack exposing 170,937 accounts from dating website Military Singles. The accounts were posted publicly to pastebin, and appear to have authentic credentials with @us.army.mil email addresses and other military domains. The group has been targeted aggressively by the FBI since last June, when it pinned LulzSec's former leader with charges and had him cooperate with the US as an undercover witness — which led to the arrest of three LulzSec members and conspiracy charges for two others.

New Facebook privacy policy will track non-users

New Facebook privacy policy will track non-users

Posted on Mar 28, 2012 by MG1

Facebook is in the process of updating its user agreement documents, in part to clarify its position on employers demanding job applicants' log in details, but has also added a couple of sneaky additions.
Now known as its Statement of Rights and Obligations, Facebook's new user agreement is still being reviewed but includes a clause that it can store and process data on un-registered users who in any way interact with the site.
Facebook wants "non-users who interact with Facebook" to agree to have their "personal data transferred to and processed in the United States" – but it's not clear how these non-users who haven't signed up to Facebook can possibly give consent to these terms.

Posted on Mar 28, 2012 by MG1

A spokesperson from Olympus has said that pre-orders for its E-M5, the first in the Olympus OM-D line are the highest they've ever had, for a camera of its kind.
Speaking to TechRadar, Mark Thackara, Olympus UK marketing manager said, "Pre-orders are the highest we've ever had, it's a lot higher than the [PEN] E-P1, and even the biggest pre-order level for many years, which I think shows how people are responding to the camera."
Olympus introduced the OM-D during the Japanese photography trade show, CP+. It features a retro design and inbuilt electronic viewfinder.
It's a new direction for the company, which was one of the first on the market with mirrorless cameras, unveiling the PEN E-P1 b...
