Like UnlikeFiled in: ProjectorsBenQLW61STLX60ST
Back in January, BenQ unveiled their first laser-based projectors, the LX60ST, and LW61ST. Today, the company announced that these projectors are now available in the USA exclusively through AVI-SPL and Projector People. This will only last until April though and then the projectors will be available through other certified retailers. The LX60ST and LW61ST both come with 2000 ANSI lumens and an 80000:1 contrast ratio. They also have a native XGA (1024 x 768) and WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution, respectively. This is the first time that the laser technology has been used in a projector that’s bigger than a pico projector. The technology helps cut energy consumption by 90% and provides an image t...

Google Chrome 18 final arrives with graphics speedups
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google on Wednesday posted the finished version of Chrome 18. The stable version now brings hardware graphics speedups to HTML5's Canvas for 2D and is potentially much faster for certain websites. Acceleration works on both Macs and Windows PCs, but not Linux so far.
The visual improvement partly extends to older computers. Chrome now uses TransGaming's SwiftShader to allow for WebGL 3D apps on graphics chips or platforms that wouldn't normally support it, such as older Intel integrated video and Windows XP systems. Performance will be slower as it's reliant entirely on the main processor, but it will let Chrome users on these PCs see some content that was previously off-limits.

Microsoft Wants Faster Internet With "HTTP Speed+Mobility"
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft plans to submit a proposal for a faster internet protocol to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) -- the standards body currently in charge of producing the second-generation Hypertext Transfer Protocol (aka HTTP 2.0) -- called HTTP Speed+Mobility. The IETF is currently meeting this week to discuss the future of HTTP which may also consider Google's next-generation solution called SPDY (pronounced speedy).
Microsoft revealed its plans on Sunday in a blog, reporting that HTTP Speed+Mobility will emphasize performance improvements and security while at the same time accounting for the important needs of mobile devices and applications. That means not only should browser-based s...

Microsoft downs Zeus botnet but can't name names
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft won court permission to seize servers Friday that took down a deployment of the Zeus botnet, and it even detailed the corporate structure that enabled using the zombie network to steal cash from victims.
The downside is it can't name any of the perpetrators.
According to court papers, Microsoft can identify 39 individuals by their roles in the criminal enterprise, by online aliases and in some cases email addresses where they can be reached, but none of them by their real names and addresses.
The names run the gamut -- Jonni, D Frank, MaDaGaSkA, Lucky, NoName, bx1, Admin 2010, Veggi Roma -- as do the email addresses, many of them Yahoo and Hotmail accounts. And the roles of the def...

Tumblr hits 20 billion post milestone, nears 50 million blogs
Like UnlikeWhile it's not quite accurate to say everyone has a Tumblr (at least not yet), you can now remark that there are about three posts on Tumblr blogs for every human on the planet. This week, the popular blogging platform hit a huge milestone when the 20 billionth post was uploaded to its servers, and it's currently closing fast on the 50 millionth blog goalpost as well.
To give you some perspective on the size of the platform, there are about 845 million monthly users on Facebook, but since it's common for Tumblr users to have multiple blogs, it's difficult to do a direct comparison. Tumblr went from 5 billion posts on May 1st last year to 10 billion in September, before crossing 20 billion on...

RapidShare declared legal in Germany
Like UnlikeRapidShare were previously ordered by the Higher Regional Court of Hamburg to filter all user uploads in order to prevent infringing material from hitting its servers. The ruling was a result of pressure from music conglomerate GEMA. In a reversal of fortune, the court has declared that that RapidShare operates legally in Germany, and that it does not have to filter user uploads.

Google dives into personal analytics with new Account Activity feature
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
We recently saw Stephen Wolfram reveal what he called the personal analytics of his life (built from decades of meticulous data collection), and it looks like Google is now going some way towards making that easier for you to do yourself. It rolled out its new Account Activity feature today, an opt-in tool (still technically in beta) that tracks your activity across Google's services and delivers a report each month on your internet use. That includes things like the number of emails sent and received, your most contacted email addresses, information about your search history (if you have it enabled), stats from Google Latitude, and the different browsers and devices you've used to sign into...

Apple Claims the iPad's Charging "Bug" Is Actually a Feature
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPad 3
Since it was launched, people have been complaining that the new iPad doesn't charge properly, reporting that the device isn't fully charged even when it claims to be. Apple has now responded, stating that this is actually on purpose.
All Things D reports that Apple broke it down for them: The iPad displays that it is 100-percent charged before it is. At that point, it continues to charge to capacity, before dishcarging a little, and then charges back up to 100 percent again. Speaking to All Things D, Apple VP Michael Tchao explains:

Pentagon devising new rules of engagement for cyber attacks as vulnerability concerns rise
Like UnlikeThe Pentagon made it clear last November that it saw hacking and cyber attacks as acts of aggression that merited a military response. This past Tuesday, the head of Cyber Command provided insight on new rules of engagement that are being considered for such threats. General Keith Alexander told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee that one goal of the changes would be to expand the Department of Defense's role, thereby granting the White House more control should the US be struck by a large-scale attack. Under the proposed rules, the Department of Homeland Security would work with private companies to protect domestic networks, but should it be discovered that an attack was origin...

Carriers "leaked" $58B due to faulty billing systems
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Mobile carriers process a ton of data, really absurd amounts of data, and in the rush to make systems faster and more capable of providing large amounts of bandwidth for users, apparently there are some leaks in the system that are causing some big losses for carriers. According to a new report by Juniper Research, carriers lost $58 billion in 2011 because of faulty billing systems, that adds up to 6% of revenues for all mobile operators worldwide.
Apparently, billing systems created by carriers just can't keep up with the massive amounts of data being processed. Carriers have focused so much on making the data move quickly and reliably, that they haven't spent enough to put in place proper...

'Anonymous' hackers plan to shut down the Internet this Saturday
Like UnlikeNotorious hacker group Anonymous has previously stated its intentions to shutdown the Internet on Saturday, March 31st, as a form of protest. “To protest SOPA, Wallstreet, our irresponsible leaders and the beloved bankers who are starving the world for their own selfish needs out of sheer sadistic fun, on March 31, anonymous will shut the Internet down,” the group stated last month. “Remember, this is a protest, we are not trying to ‘kill’ the Internet we are only temporarily shutting it down where it hurts the most.” Operation Global Blackout 2012 looks to shut down the Internet by disabling its core DNS servers, thus making websites inaccessible. Cyber security experts claim that it is unl...
