T-Mobile's Web Guard blocking clean sites

T-Mobile's Web Guard blocking clean sites

Posted on Mar 27, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: T-Mobile

T-Mobile USA's Web Guard sounds like a good idea. When activated, it keeps those under 18 from viewing web sites on their phone that deal with topics like Alcohol, Drugs, Guns, Suicide, Pornography, Weapons and more. The feature is automated and looks for certain keywords to determine if a site is safe for little Johnnie to read. The feature is turned on by default on all of T-Mobile USA's pre-paid accounts. Although it can be disabled by those over 18, the error page that pops up when a site is blocked doesn't explain how to disable it.
The problem is that Web Guard has run wild and because a relatively clean site might have a keyword misconstrued by the software, sites related to music, s...

The publication also suggested that Amazon will introduce a low-end 7-inch model with a resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels, as well as a medium to high-end 7-inch model that will include a 1,280 x 800-pixel display. While Apple CEO Tim Cook claimed that Amazon’s tablet had no impact on iPad sales, the Kindle Fire managed to capture 14% of the tablet market in...

RIM's latest patent details automatic volume adjustments based on handset placement

Posted on Mar 27, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

That moment when you physically hurt your ear by mashing your cellphone up against it in a futile bid to hear the person on the other end. That's the very moment that RIM's gunning to make history with its latest patent, which was filed way back in November of 2007 but just granted today. The BlackBerry-maker's patent describes an adjustable acoustic speaker output "based on an estimated degree of seal of an ear about a speaker port" -- effectively a system where the volume can automatically increase if a handset jostles further from your ear. Not surprisingly, the description details "at least one touch sensor" used for detecting the distance between one's ear and the device, and the connec...

Filed in: Google

Tickets for Google I/O went on sale at 7 AM Pacific time and sold out quickly. The first tickets to sell out were the academic tickets at $300 each. These choice tickets were gone within thirty minutes. Shortly after those sold out, the more expensive standard tickets ($900) were no longer available.
Google I/O is popular among developers who get to learn more about Android and often receive freebies during the event. Last year, the company handed out Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets with Android Honeycomb. This year, rumors suggest the bonus device could be the Nexus tablet, a low-cost slate expected to land with a $200 price tag.

Chrome OS tested on Samsung’s Exynos 5250 ARM chip: could Chrome join the mobile OS wars?

Chrome OS tested on Samsung’s Exynos 5250 ARM chip: could Chrome join the mobile OS wars?

Posted on Mar 27, 2012 by MG1

Google’s Chrome operating system is being tested on Samsung’s Exynos 5250 ARM chip. Possibly, on a new device called “Daisy.” Why is this interesting? So far, there are only two Chrome OS-flavored notebooks and both are running on Intel Atom chips.
Add to this with the fact that Samsung has previously explicitly mentioned that its Exynos 5250 chip aims to end up first on high-end tablets, and only later on smartphones, so you have an interesting combination. Could Google introduce another rival to its own Android operating system? This wouldn’t make much sense, but that’s exactly the suggestion you’d arrive at logically.

Apple, Nokia and RIM nano-SIM designs leak, will fight to the death

Apple, Nokia and RIM nano-SIM designs leak, will fight to the death

Posted on Mar 27, 2012 by MG1

Apple is trying to outmaneuver Nokia, RIM, Motorola and others, and introduce its own design for the next generation of SIM cards. It is signing up subsidiaries with voting rights to overturn Nokia's majority in the crucial period before the ETSI board votes in favor of a nano-SIM standard. The rest of the industry was hesitant that Apple will try and impose licencing fees on its mechanism, but Cupertino offered it all for free.
Apple's tray-loading proposal basically strips the plastic from the current micro-SIM cards that are in the iPhone 4/4S, but Nokia is concerned that the remaining part has the same length as the width of the current slots, so users might try and jam the cards sideway...

Google Play now appears in your Google toolbar

Google Play now appears in your Google toolbar

Posted on Mar 27, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

When you open Google today, you’d probably instantly notice a change - right in the black strip in the upper part of the screen, there’s a new item. The Google toolbar now shows a link to Google Play, the new name for the Android Market augmented with Google Music, Google Books and movies.
The highlight on the “Play” link is clear with a contrasted red “New” signalling you should go and check out what’s new from Google. This was to be expected, considering the growing importance of Google's mobile app and media market.
It’s also clear that Google is (not very) slowly transforming into more of a web portal than a search engine.

HTC shutting down online backup service ahead of revamp

Posted on Mar 27, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: HTC

HTC has revealed that it is shutting down its HTCSense.com online backup service in preparation for a renovation that will bring new features to the service. As a result of the shutdown, user data stored on HTC's servers will be deleted, so those that utilized the service will want to retrieve their information before it goes dark.
HTCSense.com was an online portal for HTC Sense-enabled Android devices that provided cloud-based backup for contacts, messages, GPS waypoints (Footprints in HTC-speak), and call history. The system was similar to Apple's iCloud backup service, though it was around long before Apple debuted iCloud.
