Pirate Bay links blocked from Windows Live Messenger due to 'malicious' content
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
We learned yesterday that Microsoft had started blocking links to The Pirate Bay in Windows Live Messanger, and now Microsoft has helped to clarify why those messages are being blocked. A spokesperson for Microsoft told us that "we block instant messages if they contain malicious or spam URLs based on intelligence algorithms, third-party sources, and/or user complaints. Pirate Bay URLs were flagged by one or more of these and were consequently blocked." It doesn't sound like Microsoft is specifically targeting piracy-related sites with this block, though we can't say exactly how Microsoft's "third-party sources" or "intelligence algorithms" view a site like The Pirate Bay. While there might ...

Megaupload claims US Military uploaded 94,245 gigabytes
Like UnlikeIn an interview two weeks ago, Kim Dotcom revealed to Torrentfreak that a number of Megaupload’s users were from the US government. In new emails, Dotcom has given exact details as to which governmental bodies were using the service, as well as upload statistics. The information was uncovered as part of the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s effort to get legitimate data off the site and back into the hands of users.
Dotcom revealed to Torentfreak that several government departments had Megaupload accounts, including dhs.gov, doe.gov, fbi.gov, hhs.gov, nasa.gov, senate.gov, treas.gov and uscourts.gov. The number of accounts from those sites totalled 1,058. Out of that number, 344 paid for a pr...

Google restores Chrome’s PageRank after 60-day penalty
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Back in January, it was discovered that Chrome’s PageRank was being boosted as part of a third party’s marketing campaign. Google claimed it had nothing to do with the effort, placing the blame solely on the marketing firm, Unruly Media. As a result, Google manually lowered the PageRank for a period of “at least 60 days.” That penalty has now come to an end, with Chrome’s normal PageRank restored.
There’s no exact date for when the penalty was lifted, although SearchEngineLand first noted the restored PageRank on March 16th. The value of a PageRank number is determined by how many sites link back to the original. Google demoted “google.com/chrome” to 0, the lowest possible, with it having be...

Galaxy S II Skyrocket tasty ICS treat unwrapped early
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleAndroid 4.0Galaxy S II Skyrocket
The Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD debuted on AT&T early this year, and at the time it was rocking Android 2.3 as the operating system. Samsung has been slowly updating many of its smartphones to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The Skyrocket is one of the devices getting the update along with the regular S II and several other smartphones that already have it.
I’m sure there are more than a few users of the Skyrocket that worried they may not get ICS, but those fears are unwarranted. The official ICS built for the Skyrocket has been around apparently since March 14, even though it hasn’t officially launched yet. If you are tried waiting for the official launch, apparently RootzWiki has lan...

Microsoft employees seize Zeus botnet servers with the help of US Marshals
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Accompanied by US marshals, Microsoft employees raided office buildings in Scranton, Pennsylvania and Lombard, Illinois on Friday; seizing servers believed to be running botnets used for identity theft. The botnets are infected with the Zeus family of malware, which uses keylogging to go after a user's financial information. Microsoft is reporting 13 million suspected Zeus infections worldwide since 2007, with more than three million just in the US.
If you're wondering what Microsoft is doing carrying out raids on office buildings, we're right there with you. It turns out that the company's Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) has used a bit of legal ingenuity to go after criminals directly — by filing...

Tim Cook meeting with Chinese officials as part of first Apple CEO visit to China
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
In a nod towards Apple's Chinese consumer base, CEO Tim Cook is paying a visit to Beijing. Earlier today, Chinese bloggers spotted Cook in Xidan, a Beijing commercial district. A spokeswoman for Apple confirmed that Cook was in China and "had great meetings with Chinese officials today," adding that "China is very important to us and we look forward to even greater investment and growth here." While she declined to elaborate on the meetings, it's possible Apple is trying to cement relationships with officials in order to defuse a trademark dispute brought by Chinese company Proview.

Tokyo court orders Google to stop autocomplete feature
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google has been ordered by the Tokyo District Court to turn off its autocomplete feature in searches after an unnamed man alleged it got him fired. According to Japan Times, the man also claims the feature breached his privacy. Google, on the other hand, believes it's not bound by Japanese law as it's headquartered in the US.
The case will be precedent-setting, as it's likely the first to order the suspension of a web search feature. This one involves finishing a word or phrase in the search box as a user types based on popular searches from other users and other information.

Angry Birds’ Maker Rovio Ups Its Game, Buys Futuremark’s Games Studio
Like UnlikeRovio has made a killing out of its Angry Birds franchise, and today it announced a deal that points to how the mobile games maker is hard at work developing what could well be the follow up to that: it has bought Futuremark Games Studio, the gaming arm of software developer Futuremark.
Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The team behind Futuremark Games Studio, based in Finland, like Rovio, are all coming over in the deal. Games the developer has made include Unstoppable Gorg and Hungribles, as well as Shattered Horizon — which, like Angry Birds Space, plays with the zero gravity concept.
The deal signifies a couple of things. First, Rovio is making some definitive moves to enhance...

LTE networks of the future could peak at 30Gbps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Today's commercial LTE networks are pretty fast, but they are only going to get faster in the future. Ridiculously fast, judging by what the guys at Huawei have accomplished. The Chinese company announced that it has developed what it calls Beyond LTE technology, which should be capable of reaching transfer rates of up to 30Gbps. That is 30 gigabits per second, with 1 gigabit equal to a thousand megabits of data.
Of course, there is a catch, for Huawei's technology takes advantage of not only "key breakthroughs in antenna structure, radio frequency architecture, IF (intermediate frequency) algorithms, and multi-user MIMO (multi-input multi-output)". Reaching these hypothetical speeds would r...

Google Play mistakenly installs Russian email app on Samsung devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Some Samsung users were surprised to discover a Russian email app installed on their Android device. Early reports thought the software, named MTS Mobile Mail in English, was malware. It was later discovered that the app was legitimate and a glitch was responsible for the errant install. Because of the way it is installed, the app is notoriously difficult to install.
The problem stems from the install process for Google Play and possible mistake by the developer. According to The Verge, the same developer that produced MTS Mobile Mail also worked on Samsung’s email app. The developer may have accidentally used the same unique identifier, com.seven.Z7, and the same signing certificate for bot...

New iPad runs hotter than Android tablets
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsAppleGoogleAndroidiPad 3
A lot has been made about how much hotter the new iPad runs than its predecessors. Overall, the blame has been placed on the much much larger battery found in the device, as well as the higher-res screen, and the updated processor... so essentially there has been blame placed on everything new about the new iPad. Apple, of course, says that the new iPad is "well within... thermal specifications".

AT&T deleting complaint posts from support forum?
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
The AT&T Windows Phone support forums is where word broke that the company would not support Microsoft’s 8107 update that addresses the disappearing keyboard issue and a variety of other security fixes. Needless to say, it turned into a torch and pitchfork scene over there rather quickly.
Beginning on Saturday night, reports started coming in that complaint posts were being deleted without warning or reason. Many users stated that when they clicked on the email notifications for the posts they were subscribed to, the replies were mysteriously deleted.

Like UnlikeMegaupload founder Kim Dotcom, who was arrested and charged with racketeering, copyright infringement and money laundering in one of the largest criminal cases of its kind, is maintaining his innocence. Dotcom has previously questioned his accusers’ motives, claiming he isn’t a so-called piracy king, but a man who ran a legitimate business that offered online storage and bandwidth.
