Nokia chief executive Stephen Elop said Thursday that Nokia was focusing on addressing shortcomings in the Windows Phone ecosystem as well as the most-requested features from former Symbian customers within the company's Lumia phone line.
But Nokia, as expected, also announced a sharp drop in revenues, as well as a 1.3 billion euro ($1.71 billion) loss for the quarter. Specifically, Nokia reported 7.35 billion euro in revenue ($9.066 billion), a 29 percent drop from a year ago, when Nokia reported a 439 million euro ($577.0 million) operating profit.

Report: Next iPhone to Include In-Cell Touch Panels
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesApple
It's not hard to tell when a new iPhone is coming - just pay attention to the increased flow of rumors leaking from Asia, where the device is manufactured. The latest story claims that the next iteration of the Apple smartphone will use new, cutting edge in-cell touch panels.
The report cropped up in Taiwan-based Digitimes, which said that "an improvement in yield rates of the in-cell touch panels at Sharp and TMD has persuaded Apple to choose to cooperate with Japan-based panel makers." The new touch panel approach would eliminate the need for an external module or film, thus reducing the weight of the device and bringing down the overall thickness of the panel array. As history has shown, ...

Sony opens PlayStation Suite SDK beta
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sony
Sony has made good on its promise made last month and launched the PlayStation Suite SDK beta for developers. Any interested party can download the software, letting them create software for all PlayStation-certified hardware. This includes the PS Vita console and the Xperia line of phones and tablets.
During the beta, developers can create apps that use physical buttons and the touchscreen using the integrated development environment for the PC simulator, which is included in the SDK. Also part of the SDK is a 2D graphics game engine and 2D physical engine. They can then test and debug their creations, while a forum will allow them to discuss their projects and learn from other developers a...

Google's chief Java architect: it's 'likely' I copied Sun code found in Android, 'I'm sorry' if I did
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Tim Lindholm wasn't the only witness to have something interesting to say on the stand today in Google and Oracle's ongoing trial. Google's "Java guru" Joshua Bloch also spoke, getting into the nitty gritty of Java code and APIs, and admitting via previously-taped deposition testimony that it was likely that some of the code he contributed to Android was indeed copied. Bloch worked at Sun for eight years before moving to Google in 2004; his LinkedIn page refers to him as the company's Chief Java Architect, though during his testimony Bloch said the title was merely an unofficial one. Oracle's attorneys focused particularly on nine specific lines of code, constituting a method called rangeChe...

Developer earns over $1,000 per day with a Windows Phone game
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
While Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform may not be as big as Apple and Google’s offerings, it is still possible for app developers to find success on the emerging operating system. A year ago, FourBros Studio launched a free game called Taptitude on the Windows Phone Marketplace. The game, as of today, has earned the company over $100,000 in revenue and boasts more than 300,000 users, Business Insider reported on Thursday. Interestingly enough, the company’s revenue has spiked since the launch of Nokia’s Windows Phones. FourBros Studio uses Microsoft’s pubCenter, along with a service called AdDuplex, to sell advertisements on Taptitude, which is now making roughly $1,000 a day and averaging...

'Anonymous' hackers to create a new social music platform [video]
Like UnlikeA small group of coders claiming to be part of the hacker group “Anonymous” are creating a new social music platform, WIRED reported on Thursday. The goal of the project is to create a service that seamlessly pulls together songs that are streamed across the Internet. The project, called Anontune, will be able to aggregate songs from third-party sources such as YouTube and SoundCloud, and it will allow users to arrange them into playlists and share with others — anonymously. The Anontune system relies on executing a Java applet, and running code that was written by members of Anonymous carries obvious risks. The service is only 20% complete according to the report, however the creators hope ...

Can the Nokia Lumia 900 reinvent the Nokia brand to what it once was?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 900
We've been Nokia fans for a long time, but it has been a rough few years for the Finnish company. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Nokia dominated the US and global market share. We all remember the Nokia 5100 and 6100 series, one of the company's most popular phones ever. And who could forget the Nokia 8110, featured in the hit film The Matrix?
In 2002, Research In Motion, the maker of BlackBerry, began to get more aggressive with their smartphone marketing, and had the insight to attack the business and government sectors. This strategy paid off for them as RIM began to erode Nokia's stronghold in the industry.

New Nokia 808 PureView promo video filmed with the phone itself
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIA808 PureView
Nokia has a new promo video for its upcoming 41MP cameraphone, the 808 Pureview, and it says the PR footage was shot entirely with the phone itself.
The video details all photographic capabilities of the monster sensor inside the Nokia 808 PureView, and the photo samples used are once taken with the handset also. The silent lossless zoom, fine details and the rapid focusing speeds are being showcased in preparation for the phone's launch.
It is expected to arrive some time next month, so we can't wait to take it out for a spin, and dream about the times this mindboggling hardware will be stuffed into a Nokia Windows Phone handset heading for Verizon.

HTC usage share drops 60% in five months, study finds
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTC
Not long ago, HTC posted six consecutive months of record revenue thanks to strong demand for its Android-powered smartphones. The company’s record run came to a screeching halt in October last year with the release of Apple’s iPhone 4S. HTC’s fourth quarter earnings fell, missing Wall Street’s expectations, and the rough patch continued in the first quarter of 2012. To compound matters, the latest study conducted by ad network Chitika shows that the troubled handset maker’s usage share has declined by more than 60% in the past five months from 18.22% to 7.28% based on traffic across its network. At the same time, Apple’s share has increased by 64% from 46.84% to 76.88% and other Android ven...

New York sues Sprint for $300 million over alleged tax fraud

New York on Thursday filed a lawsuit against Sprint Nextel Corp looking to collect more than $300 million, Reuters reported. The wireless company is accused of tax fraud for deliberately not collecting or paying more than $100 million in taxes over the past seven years. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman filed the complaint in the New York State Supreme Court on Thursday. The tax suit, which is the first filed under the state’s False Claims Act, could require Sprint to pay triple the amount it is accused of underpaying. Since 2002, New York state has required mobile phone companies to collect and pay sales taxes for their mobile services. Schneiderman claims Sprint has underpaid and...
