PS Vita sales take a beating in Japan
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
Sony can’t be happy with recent sales of its new PS Vita portable console in Japan. Sales the portable gaming device have reached a record low in Japan. Executives at Sony have to be wincing right now with the Vita slipping to fourth place spot in hardware rankings. The Vita only sold 8250 units in Japan for the week.
Sony can at least smile at the fact that the PS Vita sold more units than the Nintendo Wii. The Wii sold and even more abysmal 6,837 units. Granted the Wii is years old now and will be replaced soon and the Vita is virtually brand-new. The top seller in the hardware rankings was the Nintendo 3DS.

Alienware M11x won't be refreshed in 2012, set to be discontinued
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAlienwareM11x
Dell's Alienware M11x is set to be discontinued, after the company told us it has no plans to refresh the smallest member of its gaming laptop family. The M11x was and remains a truly unique product in what is otherwise a thoroughly saturated market — never before it had we seen a gamer-centric aesthetic and spec sheet brought down to the 11-inch form factor. Unfortunately, as well-received and successful as this product has been for Dell, the company says it no longer has a logical place in its product portfolio. Users are said to be demanding full-sized keyboards and optical drives from their gaming PCs, mobile or otherwise, and the Alienware M14x is the model to satisfy those needs.

Web inventor attacks Apple's walled garden
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
World Wide Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee has fired a thinly-veiled broadside at Apple, insisting that closed app ecosystems and locked down computing environments are stymieing innovation.
In a lengthy interview in The Guardian, Berners-Lee continued his crusade against closed systems, expressing his disappointment that the era Steve Jobs described as 'Post-PC' has shut down space for innovation.
He also referenced the oft-called 'walled gardens' that prevents users from making completely free and unbiased choices in the software that they use.

Samsung Galaxy S III an “incremental” upgrade warns insider
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
Samsung’s Galaxy S III will be more incremental update than bold new flagship, insiders claim, boosting speed and adding a new eye-tracking control system but otherwise being more of a Galaxy S II refresh. “It’ll be like the iPhone 4S was to the 4″ a UK telecoms source told CNET, referring to the more moderate changes Apple made to its smartphone late last year, despite persistent rumors of outlandish improvements. Meanwhile, Samsung might not even call it the Galaxy S III, according to the tipster.

Microsoft working on HTML5 version of Skype for browsers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft is reportedly working to bring Skype's voice calling functionality to browsers without the need for a standalone client app. This is according to at least four job ads posted by the company describing a "Skype for Browsers" project and calling on software engineers in London and Prague with "real world experience developing HTML5 UI's including rich interaction based on JavaScript."
Skype began its foray into the browser last year by hooking up with Facebook to handle its video chat features. But the service is not available on browsers beyond the social network's walls. That implementation also relies on a browser plug-in, whereas the ads' wording suggests Microsoft will use web s...

Chrome Beta for Android goes international, pins bookmarks to the homescreen
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Since Google released Chrome Beta for Android with faster browsing, new tabs, and place shifting, we've seen a few updates, including one that finally made The Verge load properly. Today the browser took another step away from beta status with a handful of new features. First up is that the app is now available in every country that Google Play is in, and Google has added 31 languages to the browser. A major issue that's now been solved is that the browser will now prompt you to open certain links — like those from YouTube — in their respective apps. There's also a new option in the menu to request the desktop version of a site if a particular page you visit stubbornly pushes you to a trunca...

Less than 5 months after joining Microsoft from Samsung, Gavin Kim has left the company.
"We can confirm that Gavin Kim has made a personal decision to leave Microsoft," a Microsoft spokesperson said in an e-mail. "We feel very good about the work he has done to set the team, and its new lead Eugene Ho, up for success. We wish him all the best."
We covered his arrival in November last year, when he said “I will be responsible to help set the future direction for the Windows Phone platform and to accelerate Microsoft’s trajectory to win the hearts and minds of consumers, carriers, device manufacturers, developers and partne...

Hang on, how many Windows 8 versions are there?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Microsoft tried to make its Windows 8 range straightforward, but already confusion abounds over quite how many versions of the new OS there are: three, four, or even more than that. The variant headcount began to swell after Microsoft initially confirmed three options: Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT, the latter being the freshly-renamed Windows-on-ARM. However, the seeds of disarray were already being sewn.

UCLA Professors Claim eHarmony Is Duping Its Customers
Like UnlikeOnline dating might be the future of romance, but it still has its fair share of detractors. Including a pair of UCLA professors, who think that eHarmony—a dating site which prides itself on its scientific approach—is duping its users.
LA Weekly reports that Benjamin Karney and Thomas Bradbury, a pair of scientists that research relationships, have spoken out against eHarmony. The site, of course, claims that it is "scientifically proven to predict happier, healthier long-term relationships." The pair of scientists have problems with that claim. Karney said to LA Weekly:

FCC fines T-Mobile $819,000 over accessibility issues
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-Mobile
The Federal Communications Commission on Monday determined that T-Mobile must pay a fine of $819,000 for “willfully and repeatedly” failing to comply with rules regarding hearing-aid compatible handsets. According to the FCC, the carrier violated the rules during 2009 and 2010. The Hearing Aid Compatibility Order requires each carrier to have at least 10 handsets, or 50% of all devices, that support acoustic coupling and 7 phones, or 33% of all devices, with inductive coupling. T-Mobile may reduce or negate the proposed fine by proving to the FCC that it did not violate the rule, or that it didn’t violate it as severely as the FCC alleges.

Gmail went down for a period of an hour or more today, affecting two percent of users worldwide. Google just confirmed that it has now resolved the issue, and everything should be back to normal.
Hundreds of people began reporting Gmail was down today—on Twitter, Facebook Google+ and in our own comments. Google still hasn't posted anything about it on its Gmail blog, or on its official Twitter account. (Update: it has now confirmed the outage. See below.) But reports are certainly widespread—many coming in via Twitter are in languages other than English.
