Panasonic spins off Sanyo DI Solutions, keeps the digital camera OEMs happy
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasPanasonicSANYO
Panasonic and Sanyo have only been life partners for about a year and a half now, but already the relationship has created a bundle of joy -- of a sort. Hot on the heels of some less-than-chipper financial news comes word that Panasonic is spinning off a portion of Sanyo. Sanyo DI Solutions is the name for the new creation, which will represent the company's efforts in producing OEM digital cameras -- cameras that get slapped with other manufacturers' labels before being sold as such. According to AV Watch, Panasonic's ownership had put a strain on Sanyo's fragile manufacturing partnerships, partnerships that can now bear beautiful, rebadged fruit. Sanyo DI Solutions will start with 10 milli...

ASUS Teases Feature-Packed P8Z77-V Premium Motherboard
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotherboardsASUS
To an interview with Anandtech, ASUSTek USA representative JJ carried with him a sackful of new Z77 Express-based motherboards. One of these caught keen eyes at VR-Zone, which attempted to describe what it saw. Called the P8Z77-V Premium, this motherboard is poised to go a notch above the already launched P8Z77-V Deluxe, in terms of features. The new P8Z77-V Premium is a crossover between the Deluxe and WS (Workstation) models, in that it features no less than four PCI-Express x16 slots in its all-PCIe slot loadout. The electrical configuration of these four slots is hard to guess, but there is a tiny PLX bridge chip that adds a few PCIe 2.0 lanes to the board's PCIe budget, to wire out onbo...

AMD FX-8150 Price Drops Like a Rock
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPUAMDFX-8150
AMD's FX-8150 was only mildly competitive with previous-generation Intel processors such as the Core i5-2500K, but to make matters worse, Intel launched its new "Ivy Bridge" Core processors that promise small but sizable performance improvements over its predecessors. The Core i5-3570K, for example, will be priced on par with FX-8150, if its price is left to itself. AMD has apparently cut prices of FX-8150 in Europe. Price aggregator Geizhals shows that the FX-8150 is available for as low as 179 EUR (incl. taxes). The PIB chip is now packed in a more cost-effective paperboard box, instead of the tin box AMD launched the SKU with.

HTC and Facebook working on new Android smartphone for later this year, says DigiTimes
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid
HTC and Facebook, two companies already familiar with one another from their partnership on the ChaCha and Salsa handsets, are reportedly in the midst of jointly developing a new Android smartphone. DigiTimes cites insider sources in reporting that a specially customized Facebook-centric handset is set to launch in the latter half of this year. It's said to feature "a platform exclusive to Facebook," which will facilitate the integration of the social network's full feature set into the phone. Yes, that's all very general at this point, but we're inclined to believe there's some truth to this, following the moderately successful run of the ChaCha / ChaChaCha / Status device, which was handic...

Nokia: No delay for Lumia 900
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 900
Nokia has denied reports that it has had to push back the UK arrival of its Lumia 900. The manufacturer says the Windows Phone device remains on schedule and has told Pocket-lint that customers will be able to buy the phone in store “very soon”.
Nokia went on to add that the Lumia 900 was always down for a Q2 arrival and that the issue lay with dealers giving out pre-order dates online.
Phones 4u had originally said that they would be selling the phone from 27 April, but it would appear it jumped the gun, with its site still taking pre-orders for the handset.

Facebook partners with McAfee, Symantec, Microsoft, others to offer free antivirus software, expanded URL blacklist
Like UnlikeUpwards of 90 percent of "hacked" Facebook accounts don't get compromised on Facebook, the company once told us. Yet, since Facebook has become one of the most important destinations for posting links, the company has been forced to protect its users from external threats as well as internal ones. Facebook today announced that its URL blacklist system that protects users from nefarious websites now incorporates the massive URL blacklists of Microsoft, McAfee, Sophos, Symantec, and TrendMicro. If Facebook decides that a link you've clicked could be malicious, it warns you — now, its database of bad links just got a whole lot bigger.

NewsFlash replaces QR codes with invisible flashes of light
Like UnlikeQR codes can often be a bit cumbersome, and they're typically limited to opening up your web browser to a particular page. The MIT Media Lab has been experimenting with a new solution that looks to improve signage-to-phone communication. It's called NewsFlash, and it's an app that uses your smartphone's rear camera to pick up flashing color codes on electronic signs that are imperceptible to the human eye. In a recent demo the tech was shown off on iPads displaying newspaper pages from around the world. As you can see in the Engadget video below, the phone is able to receive information from the iPad's display thanks to the strobing color bars, and then open up the associated articles on the...

FCC approves T-Mobile and AT&T spectrum transfer
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
The FCC has finally approved the spectrum transfer that was part of a $4 billion breakup fee that AT&T promised to T-Mobile if the companies failed to merge. Following AT&T's decision to call off the acquisition in December of last year, the two companies applied in Janurary to the FCC to get the green light for the spectrum transfer. The spectrum, which is estimated to be worth $1 billion, is in the AWS band and it covers 128 cellular market areas. Be sure to check this map to see where AT&T is losing some of its spectrum. While T-Mobile currently relies upon its AWS spectrum for its 3G network, it plans to use the additional capacity gained by the breakup fee to help it play catch-up and l...

Google wanted to subsidize a $9.99 unlimited data plan for Android phones
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsGoogleAndroid
In documents revealed during the Oracle v. Google trial today, Google mentioned to T-Mobile back in 2006 that it wanted to turn the carrier plan pricing structure on its head by underwriting part of the cost of an unlimited data package. By Google's math, customers would pay $9.99 a month for unlimited data — to subsidize the reduce cost, the company would forgo the commission it earned from T-Mobile for referring Android buyers to its online store. Google figured that its own services — Gmail, search, and so on — would consume about 15MB a month, a figure likely estimated to be far lower in 2006 than it is today.
