Netgear has today announced the world’s first 802.11ac WiFi router, the R6300, capable of speeds over 1Gbit/s on wireless. The new router is powered by Broadcom’s 5G WiFi chip, which is backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n. The R6300 is also dual band, with speeds potentially reaching 1300Mbit/s over 5Ghz, and 450Mbit/s over 2.4Ghz.

HIS launched its newest custom-design Radeon HD 7770 graphics card, the HD 7770 IceQ X iTurbo X. The card comes with factory-overclocked speeds of 1170 MHz core, and 1250 MHz (5.00 GHz effective) memory, against AMD reference speeds of 1000/1125 MHz (core/memory). Based on the 28 nm "Cape Verde" silicon, Radeon HD 7770 packs 640 Graphics CoreNext stream processors, and is wired to 1 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 128-bit wide interface.

Sony has just announced that the Android 4.0 update for its Tablet S is now available and should be rolling out to owners —j ust connect your Tablet S to Wi-Fi and you should be prompted for a system update. It's good to see Sony living up to its word and delivering this update when it said it would, though we're still waiting for the Tablet P to receive its Ice Cream Sandwich update. To go along with this update, Sony's offering the Tablet S at a bit of a discount — if you buy between now and May 12th, you'll receive $50 as well as a free cradle accessory. This puts the Tablet S at $349 for the 16GB model, and while it isn't the best Android tablet we've ever used, the infusion of Ice Cream...

Acer regains PC share, optimistic on Windows 8, ultrabooks

Acer in discussing its latest results at an investor's conference was hopeful that this was a sign of a widescale resurgence in PCs for the industry. Its climb from 10.1 percent share in the fall to 10.9 percent this winter was a sign the company's "competitiveness is coming back," according to chairman JT Wang, and that Acer would climb back to third place while Dell sank. Demand for the spring would be typical in light of world economic troubles, but it would grow in earnest in 2012 and expand to more than 10 percent in 2013.

When the Galaxy S III does land in the US, it might not have that rumored quad-core chip. That’s according to a Samsung executive speaking to The Korea Times, who told the publication that Galaxy S IIIs in different markets will feature different chips. In Europe, the GSIII will feature Samsung’s Exynos quad-core processor, while Qualcomm’s chips will be used in the United States.

Microsoft has released a new version of its Security Essentials anti-virus software this week, bumping it to version 4.0. The latest update includes some UI enhancements, the usual bug fixes and performance improvements. and some changes to the Automatic Remediation feature — which quarantines viruses and malware without user intervention.

Since Ivy Bridge finally trotted down the yellow brick road, there's been a growing number of tin-men waiting for their hearts. Samsung's 17-inch Series 7 Chronos, it seems, was also a member of that club. We first saw the desktop replacement back at CES, and that "next-gen" processor we reported is confirmed as a 2.3GHz i7 3615QM, while the suspected ATI GPU seems to have been switched out for an NVIDIA GeForce 650M. Memory and storage are taken care of by 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB SATA HDD respectively. Koss may be known for its budget-minded offerings in the headphone space, but today it's announced something to shake things up a bit. Falling under the Striva moniker, Koss has created what it claims to be the first lineup of headphones to use "WiFi technology that receives music directly from the Internet without wires." To start, there's the over-ear Pro model, loaded with gesture controls for volume and channel adjustments, while an in-ear set, dubbed Tap, is also available for extra portability.

We are stardust. We are golden. And we've got to get ourselves back to the Xbox. According to some anonymous-type sources over at The Verge, Microsoft is set to continue its shift away from Zuneland into the world of Woodstock -- that's reportedly the codename of a new Spotify-like service set to make its debut at this year's E3. According to the reports, the tiny yellow bird of a service will work across platforms (think Windows 8, iOS, Android and, of course, the Xbox, amongst others), thanks, at least in part, to browser-based functionality. The service is said to be set to launch later in the year, around the same as some key MS operating systems.

NVIDIA released its first desktop graphics cards based on its 28 nm GK107 silicon, in as many as three models, the GeForce GT 630, GT 640, GT 640 (second variant). Apart from these, NVIDIA appears to have launched two more models, one labeled GT 640, and another GT 645, which are based on previous generation GF116 and GF114, respectively. These new SKUs are available only to OEM partners, who will implement them in their new desktop PC designs.

Apple's WWDC hitting San Francisco on June 11th

It's time to shift around that summer vacation. Apple today announced that it will be kicking off this year's World Wide Developers Conference on June 11th at San Francisco's Moscone West. The event is set to run through the 15th, focusing on developing for OS X Mountain Lion and iOS, by way of 100-plus technical sessions and hands-on labs, letting the developer community work directly with Cupertino staff -- and you can bet we'll be there as well. LG comes back to profit through smartphones and TVs

LG saw itself return to health Wednesday with early 2012 results that showed it back in form. It swung from an equivalent to a $13.9 million loss in winter a year ago to $213.3 million in profit based on a much stronger position in smartphones and better 3D TV sales in is native South Korea. Its mobile division made the equivalent of $34.2 million in profit, almost all of that from cellphones, after having lost $88.7 million at the start of 2011.

Sprint sells 1.5 million iPhones in Q1, cuts net losses to $863 million

Sprint managed to cut its net losses to $863 million last quarter, while adding more than 1.1 million new customers to its network. It highlights the iPhone as a big seller: having sold 1.8 million of the devices in Q4 last year, it shifted a further 1.5 million in Q1 2012, 44 percent of which were to new customers. The company has also seen growth in postpaid customers — a net growth of 263,000 in the network last quarter alone, with each spending an average of $4.03 more than last year. The resulting Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) of $59.88 is a new record for Sprint, improving on last quarter, which set the previous high mark.
