Thousands rally against CISPA cybersecurity bill

Thousands rally against CISPA cybersecurity bill

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG1

The controversial Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), which is supported by more than 100 members of the House of Representatives, is scheduled to be discussed in Congress on Friday, where it will be the first bill to go to a vote since the collapse of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in January. The bill looks to give businesses and the federal government legal protection to share cyber threats with one another in an effort to prevent online attacks. Internet privacy and neutrality advocates, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, feel the bill does not contain enough limits on how and when the government may monitor private information, however, and they fear that ...

Samsung pays people to protest outside Australian Apple Store; goal is to mock iSheep culture

Samsung is really trying to push this image of Apple iPhone and Apple iPad users as sheep. After releasing a video that did everything but directly call out all users of Apple devices as sheep, the Korean based manufacturer has ratcheted things up a notch. This week, Samsung paid an Australian marketing company called Tongue to provide protesters to stand in front of an Australian Apple Store and scream, "Wake Up!" The protesters were bused to a location and started the chant that is designed to tell iOS users that they need to wake up and stop blindly following other iOS users.

Amazon's Q1 revenue up 35 percent to $13.18 billion: 9 out of 10 bestsellers were digital

Amazon has just released its Q1 earnings statement, and though sales were up 34 percent year-over to $13.18 billion, net income was down 35 percent to $130 million for its first fiscal 2012 quarter — yes, Amazon's margins are historically very low. North America sales alone amounted to $7.43 billion, up 36 percent from Q1 2011. That puts sales on the optimistic side of the company's Q1 prediction during its Q4 2011 earnings report, and profit better than expected — especially since it predicted a possible $200 million loss for this quarter.

Existing customers whose accounts are in good standing will receive a $125 or $150 gift card, depending on their service, by email on April 27th to help offset the cost of finding a new provider. Those with overdue accounts that address the balance will receive their gif...

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin hits the web, with HUD in tow

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG1

It's here! Precise Pangolin or, as it's officially known, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Canonical's latest is now available in its final(ish) form and ready for you to download, burn and install. While LTS (Long Term Support) releases are generally more conservative in their application of new features, Pangolin does include some rather notable tweaks. The most immediately noticeable will be the new log in screen which, while largely the same, does have the slick new trick of changing wall papers to match the selected user. A more subtle change is revealed once you've logged on and press alt -- HUD. The new search-based menu system is quite a departure from traditional interaction models, and one that w...

Everyone loves to stir the pot and engage in some solid fear-mongering whenever it comes to privacy on the Internet, especially when it comes to Google products and services, but it needs to stop, because all we're getting are biased voices that benefit from having people riled up about any potential problem. As we explained back when Google first united its privacy policies, there is huge value to be had for you by Google using this language, and now it seems we need to give a refresher on the other side of that equation: the possible threats. Of course, there are those out there already trying to paint Google's TOS as trouble, as we told you earlier today.

Rumor claims Wii U has Android built-in

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG1

It is starting to feel like whenever a device or company is losing steam, there's one surefire way to at least get it some buzz: claim that Android is going to be added in. We've seen it time and again. There have been multiple rumors that RIM would be either switching to Android, making its apps available for Android, or simply selling to the largest Android manufacturer. There have been rumors that Sony might adopt Android for its PlayStation products. And now, it has been rumored that the next Nintendo console, the Wii U, will have Android built-in.
We just heard about how Nintendo thinks that the iPhone killed portable game consoles (although we're not sure if Nintendo needs to "think" ...

Apple is 10 years behind Microsoft on security, expert says

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG1

Apple may be the most valuable company in the world, but when it comes to security, the Cupertino-based company doesn’t hold a candle to Microsoft. Kaspersky Lab co-founder and chief executive Eugene Kaspersky on Wednesday told CBR that Apple is a decade behind Microsoft in terms of computer security. ”I think they are ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security,” Kaspersky said. “For many years I’ve been saying that from a security point of view there is no big difference between Mac and Windows. It’s always been possible to develop Mac malware, but [Flashback] was a bit different. For example it was asking questions about being installed on the system and, using vulnerabilities, it was...

Google Maps has been updated to allow users to access new “photo tours” within the service. The feature uses contributed photos from around the world that are stitched together to give a 3D photo scene of a popular location. Photo tours are available for more than 15,000 popular sites around the world and can be initiated through Google Maps in two ways. “First, when you search for a place, such as Trevi Fountain, the results in the left panel will indicate if there is a photo tour available: click either the thumbnail image or the link to start the tour,” Google wrote on its blog. “Alternatively, if you’re browsing the map and click on the label for a particular landmark, the info window th...

Amazon Appstore offers Draw Something for Amazon Kindle Fire

Amazon Appstore offers Draw Something for Amazon Kindle Fire

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG1

The hottest mobile game around is not Angry Birds and is not even Words With Friends. The most popular game is Draw Something, the Pictionary-esque game that has so much momentum that it was the reason that Zynga paid $180 million (plus $30 million in employee retention bonuses) to buy Draw Something's developer OMGPOP. The problem for Amazon Kindle Fire users was that the game has not been available in the Amazon Appstore. Since we earlier told you that half of all Android tablet sales belong to the low-priced Amazon Kindle Fire, that meant that half of all Android tablet users were missing out on the game that was the number one free app, number one paid app and number one game in 80 count...

There’s certainly nothing new about a keyboard case for the iPad. In fact, not too long ago Logitech unveiled its own similar product called the Ultrathin Keyboard Cover. We’ve already reviewed the product and found it to be very nice. A new product has turned up on Kickstarter called the Brydge and at least to my eyes it’s a much more attractive and interesting product.

Wii U crucial as Nintendo posts first loss in 30 years

Wii U crucial as Nintendo posts first loss in 30 years

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG3

Mario-maker Nintendo has posted its first financial loss in thirty years as Wii sales founder and smartphones boom.
The company lost 43.2 billion yen over the course of the last financial year (about $533m, £329m), but it had expected to lose 65 billion yen so it's not all bad.
Why the financial gloom? Well, Wii sales are dropping as the console ages, the Nintendo 3DS is selling at a loss to entice users in, big-title game releases have been few and far between - and the strength of the Japanese yen hasn't helped matters either.
