Two years before Android was launched commercially, Google approached T-Mobile USA with the prospect of releasing an internet-centric phone with a $9.99 a month (£6) unlimited data plan.
The initial device looks a little bit like a strange BlackBerry Bold, with Google proposing an open source operating system packed with Google apps like Maps, Gmail and Google Talk.

White House threatens to veto CISPA cybersecurity bill, ahead of Friday's vote

Posted on Apr 26, 2012 by MG3

On Friday, the US House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA for short. It's a controversial bill, to be sure. Supporters, including a who's who of tech industry firms, say that having government and corporations share internet data is necessary to ensure network security and national defense. Detractors claim it would allow private companies to misuse their customers' personal data without fear of legal retribution, as long as they claim the sharing is for cybersecurity purposes. Even should the bill pass, though, the White House has threatened a veto: today, a letter from the Executive Office of the President (PDF) says that...

You didn’t think Microsoft was giving up on music after it killed the Zune, did you? Of course not. Microsoft doesn’t give up on anything. Apparently the folks up in Redmond are planning to unveil its latest crack at the music industry at E3 2012, which takes place in June.
Microsoft is preparing a cross-platform music service currently codenamed Woodstock. My guess is it will have something similar to the Zune Pass in which users can subscribe for a monthly fee to download music to their heart’s content. It will be available on all the major desktop and mobile platforms: Windows 8, Mac, iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Xbox will be thrown into that mix too for obvious reasons. Instead of app...

Sprint confirms unlimited data plan for next iPhone

Sprint confirms unlimited data plan for next iPhone

Posted on Apr 26, 2012 by MG3

Sprint, the nation’s third largest wireless carrier, is the only major wireless provider that continues to offer unlimited smartphone data plans. When its network finally landed Apple’s iPhone, many people feared unlimited data would be heading out the door. Sprint continued to offer the plans, however, and will continue to do so even after its 4G LTE network goes live later this year and once it launches Apple’s next-generation iPhone. ”I’m not anticipating the unlimited plan would change by that point,” Sprint CEO Dan Hesse told CNET. “That’s our distinctive differentiator.”
