Verizon gets new prepaid plans, adds Jetpack hotspot to contract-free lineup
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
And just like that Verizon has revamped its prepaid pricing structure. Starting tomorrow, May 1st, the carrier will be offering unlimited talk and text packaged with 1GB of data for $80 a month. The new offering will be available first with the Samsung Illusion, a disappointingly 3G handset, though, one that wont demand a two year commitment to Big Red. Verizon is also adding the Jetpack MiFi 4510L LTE mobile hotspot to its contract-free offerings for $130. Prepaid plans for the 4G wireless hotspot start at $15 for 250 MB a week, but quickly climb to $60 and $90 for 3GB and 10GB, respectively. For more info check out the PR after the break.

Apple and Samsung to sit down for mediation
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Apple and Samsung have been going at it seemingly forever in the battle of ‘who infringed who’s patent.’ Recently, both companies have expressed an interest in settling their differences by way of mediation, which is set to begin on May 21 and 22. In this mediation, both tech giants are to discuss possible settlements to their IP differences, and to draw up for the judge presiding over it “a candid evaluation of the parties’ likelihood of prevailing on the claims and defenses.”
Even though talks are in development at this time, it doesn’t guarantee discussions will result in a settlement between the two. Tim Cook has said that he dislikes litigation, but he won’t stand for what Apple has cal...

HTC EVO 4G LTE coming to Sprint on May 18th?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCEVO 4G
Last week, we told you that Sprint will start taking pre-orders for the HTC EVO 4G LTE on May 7th. So far, so good. But when can we expect the next phone in the EVO series to actually be released? Android Authority says it has the answer as a pair of sources have tipped them to expect a May 18th launch of the handset.
And while it doesn't exactly confirm the May 18th date, leaked photos obtained by GoodandEVO.com from a source described as reliable show promotional materials for the HTC EVO 4G LTE. These materials are supposedly being delivered to Sprint locations on May 14th which would dovetail with the rumored May 18th launch date. The phone will sell for $199.99 with a signed two year c...

From nukes to hacks: US and Russia to create a 'red phone' secure hotline for cyber attacks
Like UnlikeThe Nuclear Risk Reduction Center (NRRC) was established in 1988 by the US State Department to provide a direct line of communication between the US and Russia. It was designed to prevent things like space launches from being misconstrued as acts of aggression; an obvious necessity for two nations that have nuclear weapons pointed at one another. However, times are changing, and these days the NRRC looks to be taking on a new role — by providing a channel for discussions about cyber attacks.

Samsung denies having any part of “Wake Up” protest
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
While Samsung is known to unleash some marketing ads that poke fun at loyal Apple followers, the Korean manufacturer says it had no part in the display that took place outside an Australian Apple Store the other day.
Early reports suggested that this display was tied into Samsung’s upcoming device release, which many suggest will be the Galaxy S III, and frankly, it didn’t seem entirely out of character considering Samsung’s “Dude, you’re a barista” campaign, "Samsunged" campaign and more recently its depiction of sheep in its latest teaser trailer.
Even though all signs seemed to point to Sammy, Samsung released a statement to Slash Gear earlier today saying, “Samsung Electronics Australia ...

Nokia Lumia 900 $100 credit now being delivered
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 900
When Nokia discovered the problem with the LTE feature of Windows Phone 7 they handled the situation pretty well, delivering the fix in less than a week, and also offering buyers who purchased the handset before the 21st April a generous $100 credit towards their mobile phone bill.
In practice this means at least 1-2 months of free service on the carrier, and buyers are now reporting that the credit is being applied to their accounts.
While the bug was of course regrettable, it may very well have been the best PR a few million dollars could buy.

Twenty percent of drivers want cars that drive themselves
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
A new study from J.D. Power and Associates has revealed U.S. drivers are interested in adding one of the newest and most expensive technologies to their next vehicle — autonomous driving. The feature allows the vehicle to take control of acceleration, braking, and steering without any human interaction. While the technology is still being developed and tested, 20% of all car owners in the U.S. said they “definitely would” or “probably would” include the technology in their next vehicle, even after learning the estimated market price of $3,000. Prior to learning the price, however, a whopping 37% of people were interested in the feature. “Consumers are still learning about how autonomous driv...

Google: We're fine with keeping you waiting for slow Android updates
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Android smartphones are not typically updated very frequently, leaving many owners to either try and update their own device, or wait for months or even years to get the latest operating system. The technical lead developer on the Android Open Source Project believes the slow update rate many Android users have had to endure is “very reasonable.” Sometimes, Jean-Baptiste Queru revealed his opinion on his Google+ page in a congratulatory post towards Sony, who recently updated its Tablet S to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The developer said the Japanese company was the biggest contributor to Android, leaving all other manufacturers playing catch-up. Due to its contributions, Sony is able to...

“Worse than SOPA” CISPA bill passes
Like UnlikeLuckily for denizens of the internet, SOPA was struck down not too long ago, but there’s another bill which was passed by the House of Representatives that proves just as menacing. It’s called CISPA, and was voted for 248 to 168. The bill would require private companies to hand over information they pertaining to you if requested by any government agency. That includes websites like Google, YouTube, and Facebook.

Ubuntu releases 12.04 Precise Pangolin LTS Linux
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsLinuxUbuntu
Popular Linux distribution Ubuntu announced the immediate availability of their latest release yesterday, bringing with it Unity and its file searching tool HUD to enterprise users as part of the long-term support release which distribution backer Canonical will offer security updates for until 2017.
"There's a significant set of aesthetic changes for users, and ultimately beauty is a feature," Steve George, head of communications at Canonical, told ZDNet. "Users enjoy their environments more when they look beautiful and modern." That said, it's also true that Unity continues to seriously divide loyal followers and this latest release is unlikely to be any different despite some major improv...

Kodak continues downward spiral, posts $366 million loss
Like UnlikeFiled in: KODAK
Kodak has posted yet another disappointing quarter despite its efforts to cut costs, sell patents, and jettison its unprofitable businesses. For the first quarter of 2012, ending March 31, Kodak reported a $366 million loss with total revenue at $965 million, which is down 27 percent from the same quarter last year.
Kodak has attributed the continued downward spiral to its disappearing traditional, film-based business, declining digital camera sales, and a one-time $61 million revenue cut from a tax refund. The company also recently decided to shed its digital camera business altogether.

What a ClusterFuzz: Google details Chrome security
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Developing a browser can be a tricky business, especially in the case of Chrome, which has an ever shifting codebase. Google’s answer to the problem is a “fuzzing” infrastructure, a cluster of hundreds of virtual machines that run around 6,000 instances of Chrome simultaneously. Dubbed the “ClusterFuzz”, the servers automatically download the Last Known Good Revision of Chrome and perform fifty million tests on it per day.

Google agrees to pay $25,000 fine to put FCC investigation 'behind it'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Earlier this month Google was hit with a $25,000 fine from the FCC for impeding an investigation into whether or not the data collected during its Street View project violated user privacy. Now the company has agreed to pay the fine "in order to put this investigation behind it." The FCC's complaint centered on a specific Google engineer responsible for coding the Street View project software, who reportedly refused to answer questions during the investigation, which the FCC claims left "significant factual questions" unanswered. While Google says that it paid the fine as a way of closing the investigation for good, the FCC looks at it a different way. "In promising to pay the bureau's penal...

Firefox 13 beta released, no longer restores all your tabs at re-launch
Like UnlikeFirefox 12 may have just launched, but if you're curious what's next for the browser the beta for the 13th version is already available. The changes are mostly minor but they should result in speedier browsing. For example, when you restart the browser it no longer automatically re-opens all of the tabs you had open in the background, which is welcome news to those of us who suffer from "excessive tab syndrome." Users will also now find the SPDY protocol enabled by default to ensure faster browsing, and there's a new default home page with easy access to things like bookmarks and history. The majority of the changes are on the developer end, but if you're curious you can download the beta ah...

Wolfram Alpha now available as a $2.99 PC app
Like UnlikeWolfram Alpha already offers its brand of computational knowledge in the form of a mobile app, and now it's available on the PC as well. The company has partnered up with Intel to offer the app through the AppUp market, where it's available now for $2.99, the same price as the mobile version. It appears to be largely the same in terms of functionality, but there's been a few interface tweaks to better fit the larger screen. Wolfram Alpha says that the app has been specifically tailored for laptops and ultrabooks. Of course, you can already access the search engine on your computer for free via the website, but the new app appears to provide a nice midway point between the basic service and W...
