Gigantic 268MP image sensor shoots space photos from Earth

If you though the high megapixel DSLR cameras used by pro photographers were impressive with their resolution, wait until you see the gigantic photo sensor for the OmegaCAM that is operated by the European Southern Observatory. The camera uses 32 different image sensors to reach its 268MP total resolution. It uses that resolution to shoot very impressive space photos.
The gigantic sensor weighs a whopping 1,700 pounds. The giant sensor is able to deliver some of the highest resolution images around. This camera sensor will be used inside a terrestrial telescope rather than being launched into space to take its photos like Hubble.

Earlier this week, we saw the Vizio tablet in video when NBA star Blake Griffin was hooked up by the Vizio man with a new home theater and a tablet to control the system. I like how the tablet can integrate with the Vizio home theater and work like a universal remote control. I also really liked the cool stereo speaker setup that Vizio used so you get stereo sound in portrait and landscape modes.

So remember the Optimus 3D smartphone from LG? It was the first smartphone announced to boast a glasses-free 3D display, and we were all really excited when LG said this bad boy would launch worldwide in June.
Unfortunately, the phone has seen a couple delays, most recently the shift from a June 20 UK release to July 11. In spite of the delays, LG wants to keep us excited about the Optimus 3D, and has issued a press release as a reminder.

The Nintendo 3DS is a failure, at least according to Ian Baverstock, co-founder of gaming consultancy group Tenshi Ventures. And, because the handheld console hasn't offered the greatest of first impressions of glasses-less 3D, he also believes that its legacy could be damaging for future stereoscopic devices.
Speaking at The Futuresource Entertainment Summit in London, Baverstock, who was joined on stage by Andrew Oliver, chief technical officer of Blitz Games Studios, was not unforthcoming with damning remarks for the Nintendo device: "The 3DS has dented the adoption of 3D on portable devices," he said. Nokia’s affiliate team has confirmed that Nokia will close its UK online shop by the end of the month. In a letter to partners, the Finnish firm said, “This message is to inform you that Nokia is closing their affiliate [program]… in keeping with a strategic business decision to close down the Nokia UK online shop.” The company argued that it has been hard to compete with wireless carriers that are offering products at subsidized prices. “We are planning to close the current UK online store to simplify our channel structure and focus our resources on our key trade customers,” a Nokia spokesperson told Tech Radar.

Adobe warns of new Flash Player security threat

Over on Adobe’s support page the company has warned of yet another security flaw in their popular Flash Player software.
This new threat can potentially compromise a user’s machine by causing memory corruption and allowing a malicious website to install malware on the affected PC.
Flash versions vulnerable are 10.3.181.23 and earlier for Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris.

Microsoft’s $8.5 billion proposed acquisition of Skype is one step closer to being a done deal today, with regulators officially giving the Redmond based software giant the green light to proceed with its merger plans. The deal has been stuck in regulatory limbo since it was announced in May, however analysts almost universally agreed that it was unlikely to raise many red flags given how competitive the VOIP space is these days.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is vying with Intel to become the first company to sell three-dimensional chips that boost the density of transistors in a single semiconductor by up to 1,000 times.
TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, could make its first 3D chips commercially available before the end of 2011, according to a person close to the situation who requested anonymity.
