T-Mobile USA now home to over 1 million iPhones

T-Mobile USA now home to over 1 million iPhones

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG3

T-Mobile USA has gone on record in stating that its network is now home to more than 1 million unlocked Apple iPhones. While the figure is not incredibly surprising considering the massive popularity of Apple’s smartphone line, it certainly reaffirms the fact that T-Mobile subscribers are itching for an iOS option. Though the overwhelming bulk of iPhones being used on T-Mobile’s network are 3G and 3GS models, unnamed T-Mobile spokespeople also confirmed that the carrier has micro-SIMs in development. For the time being, iPhone 4 owners who want to use their devices on T-Mobile’s network have to perform a bit of surgery on their T-Mobile SIM cards.

If iPhone gets NFC, Google ports Wallet

If iPhone gets NFC, Google ports Wallet

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG3

Google Wallet seems like a significant step forward towards NFC adoption, but until now, the service was expected to work only on devices running Android – the Google-backed mobile OS. However, it must have been clear to the Mountain View-based company that without Wallet being accessible on as many handsets on the market as possible, it would have a bumpy road ahead of it.

Motorola's CEO says the phone is going to be the best computer, best camera, best music player

Motorola's chief executive Sanjay Jha took over Moto when the company was literally falling apart in 2008 and now he has the freedom to run Motorola Mobility, the part of Motorola responsible for its mobile business after the company split earlier in the year. Motorola's financial results however haven't exactly flourished in the last few quarters as competition in Android smartphones becomes more fierce.

Carriers could be mandated to show the real 4G speeds and coverage maps by Congress

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG3

Rep. Anna Eshoo is proposing a bill in Congress that will mandate wireless carriers to disclose the true tested speeds and coverage maps of their networks, advertised as "4G".
If the bill has its way, the points of sale will have to display prominently things like a guaranteed minimum data speed, network reliability, coverage area maps, pricing, technology used to provide 4G service, as well as network conditions that can impact the speed of applications and services used on the network.

2 reasons why HP and Amazon should team-up to drive webOS forward

2 reasons why HP and Amazon should team-up to drive webOS forward

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG3

I’ve been thinking a lot about the webOS prospects recently. You may’ve read my rant on why Nokia should’ve picked Palm/HP’s rather than Microsoft’s mobile platform and now I want to make a case why HP should pitch Amazon to make a webOS-based tablet and how the two companies can help drive webOS forward. I have two reasons why a strategic deal between HP and Amazon could be beneficial for both companies.

Google Hits Unique Visitor Milestone

In its "Do No Evil" quest to become the entire Internet, Google hit a milestone in May that no other website has ever hit before. Just when you thought that the company couldn't possibly attract new visitors simply because everybody and his sister already used the service – no one searches the Web anymore, after all, they Google it – the Internet giant became the first website to ever have 1 billion unique visitors in a month.

AT&T this morning gave further details of the LG Thrill 4G that included a handful of first for the carrier. The 3D Android phone better known as the Optimus 3D will be AT&T's first to come with Qik preloaded and, like devices from the past year, will have two-way video chat out of the box. Unlike at other US carriers loading the app, though, AT&T's service will be at least officially relegated to use on Wi-Fi.

At AMD's ISC stand one could find several 2U and 4U servers built with older Opteron chips, but it was a 1U pizza box server made by Supermicro that housed two 16-core Bulldozer chips running live demonstrations of POVRay. This is the first time that AMD has publicly displayed its next generation Opteron processor, codenamed Bulldozer.

Google TV 2.0 Coming to Logitech Revue This Summer

Google TV 2.0 Coming to Logitech Revue This Summer

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG3

For many, the deal breaker for the Logitech Revue and other Google TV products was two words: IR blaster. Opting to act as a supplement to your current home theater set-up rather than a replacement for a cable/satellite set-top box, the device was hamstrung by a somewhat complicated set-up process. But this was never about the hardware, the workhorse of this product was the Android-based OS behind it all. Bringing the web to the TV has been a concept bouncing around the consumer electronics industry years, and Google’s effort leveraged the Chrome browser to bring any content to your living room. The execution, though solid, failed to meet expectations; primarily because there seemed to be so...

PCI Express cables could take us to 32Gbps speeds by 2013

PCI Express cables could take us to 32Gbps speeds by 2013

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG3

Thought Thunderbolt was the only superfast interconnect in town? Well, it is and will be for a little while yet, but the PCI Special Interest Group has just held its annual meeting and developer conference in California, where plans for a 32Gbps PCIe cable were revealed. Details are still fluid on precisely what such a connector would look like and do, but the expectation is that it'll be built out of copper wire, will be flatter and thinner than Thunderbolt's rotund construction, and will be able to channel power as well as data through to devices up to 10 feet (3m) away.

ASUS rumored to have 13-inch Android laptop on its mind, NVIDIA expected to provide ARM CPU

ASUS rumored to have 13-inch Android laptop on its mind, NVIDIA expected to provide ARM CPU

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG3

Some might argue that ASUS already has an ARM-powered Android laptop in its inventory thanks to the Eee Pad Transformer, however the company's now been identified as planning a more spacious 13-inch notebook device, whose power and pricing could well be even more attractive than the Transformer's. We should naturally be wary of the source here, DigiTimes having a record that's as patchy as the grass at Wimbledon after the first week's play, but the Taiwanese rumormonger says ASUS has already made launch plans for this 13-incher and will be using "NVIDIA's processor" inside.

The Pentax Q: Big Features in a Little Package

The Pentax Q: Big Features in a Little Package

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG3

Filed in: CamerasPentaxQ

There's a lot to like about the new Pentax Q digital camera. It has a slick retro look, five interchangeable lenses and many features of a dSLR packed into a body that's the size of a point and shoot.
The Q slims itself down by ditching the optical finder, mirror box, focusing plate and AF sensor that add bulk to a typical dSLR. What's left inside is an imaging engine with a 1/2.3-inch CMOS image sensor capable of shooting 12.4MP images and recording 1080/30 FPS HD video.
