Posted on Jun 24, 2011 by MG1

BenQ has recently announced that they will be releasing soon their first DLP projector to feature the company’s energy-saving Smart Eco Mode technology. The Smart Eco Mode technology automatically calculates the optimum lamp power needed for the best contrast performance. It does this with the help of a light sensor and measures the ambient light in the room. The company says that the technology is a “breakthrough innovation” that will help reduce the environmental impact and reduce the cost of ownership. Expect a follow up news report when more...

Filed in: Microsoft

Microsoft has launched a new version of its Windows Live SkyDrive website that is faster and easier to navigate thanks to the use of HTML5 and hardware acceleration. The new SkyDrive is rolling out gradually, as there are 100 million people who use the Web service according to Microsoft, so you may not have it yet.
In terms of performance, the software giant says it improved many core tasks and scenarios (clicking folders and navigating photo albums should go from 6-9 seconds down to 100-300 milliseconds) but it still plans to address additional core tasks in the future. The company also says it evaluated and removed anything that slowed the experience down or got in the way of a fast site.

Qualcomm: Augmented Reality glasses a long way off

Qualcomm: Augmented Reality glasses a long way off

Posted on Jun 24, 2011 by MG1

When it comes to mobile Augmented Reality technology, Qualcomm is the top dog. The San Diego company has the biggest AR R&D unit in the world and the message from its recent Uplinq conference in California was clear - it thinks that AR is going to play a significant role in shaping the mobile media horizon.
But not with Terminator style AR glasses unfortunately - with Qualcomm's senior director of business development Jay Wright telling Pocket-lint that it's not something the chipset expert is looking at.
"For Qualcomm, we think the technology is interesting, we follow it closely but it's not on our near to mid-term horizon. This is beyond the five to eight year window," he said.

iOS 5 Legal Disclaimer Section Includes Mapping Companies That Are Not Google!

Posted on Jun 24, 2011 by MG1

Even though Apple has let Google answer life’s navigational questions for us thus far, it doesn’t mean that Apple wants one of its biggest competitors cashing in on the iPhone and iPad forever.
Speculation surrounding Google Maps getting replaced in iOS has been around for years. In 2009, Apple bought a couple mapping companies. In mid-2010, the iPhone maker scrapped Google and Skyhook‘s location databases in favor of its own, and a couple months later started hiring iOS engineers with mapping experience. That’s more than enough to keep the rumor mill spinning, but things got a bit juicier today. The legal disclaimer section of the iOS 5 included references to a number of different mapping c...

Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, Updated Motoblur UI Headed To Motorola Atrix 4G Next Month

Posted on Jun 24, 2011 by MG1

For those of you who own the Motorola Atrix 4G, you know that it does all kinds of cool things. For one, it turns into a little laptop when you clip it into its corresponding laptop dock. It’s also the first dual-core smartphone to launch in the U.S., so it was the trend-setter of snappiness, if you will. One thing the Atrix 4G doesn’t do, however, is run Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, at least not until next month. That’s right Atrix owners, you’re in for a real Gingerbread treat.
Motorola will release the latest version of the Motoblur UI alongside the OTA update, which should fix some of the kinks in the interface. Sometimes heavy skins like the Motoblur UI ruin the fun of an OS update becaus...

26-year old pleads guilty to hacking AT&T iPad data

Posted on Jun 24, 2011 by MG1

Last year hackers made headlines when AT&T announced to a security breach that had allowed hackers to access the personal data from 114,000 iPad 3G users. On Thursday, 26-year old Daniel Spitler from San Francisco pleaded guilty to two crimes: conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to computers and identity theft. Spitler faces up to 10 years in prison — five years for each count, according to The Wall Street Journal. “Computer hackers are exacting an increasing toll on our society, damaging individuals and organizations to gain notoriety for themselves,” said U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman in New Jersey. “Daniel Spitler’s guilty plea is a timely reminder of the consequences of treating criminal...

Verizon's Pre 2 finally gets the webOS 2.1 update

Verizon's Pre 2 finally gets the webOS 2.1 update

Posted on Jun 24, 2011 by Immortal

Wow, this took a while. Unlocked Palm Pre 2 devices got their webOS 2.1 update in early March. And it's taken a ridiculously long time for it to come to Verizon's CDMA Pre 2. But alas, maybe we should just be grateful that it came at all, considering the Palm/HP transition?
We're done ranting; it's time to rave. The webOS 2.1 update, which is being pushed out in a piecemeal fashion, brings a lot of fantastic features. One fun addition is Exhibition, which allows you to set specific display functions when your device is being charged. You can choose from a clock display, a slideshow of your photos, or your daily agenda.
Next is voice dialing, which is prompted by holding down the volume key, ...

T-Mobile, AT&T Deal May Hurt Retailers, Employees

Posted on Jun 24, 2011 by Immortal

Filed in: T-MobileAT&T

You didn’t think you were the only ones potentially being screwed over by this whole T-Mobile and AT&T thing, did you? The deal between the two wireless operators had us focused on the potential outcomes for customers, but we’ve just been reminded that their employees are going to be seriously affected, too.
The Wall Street Journal reported that out of the 9,200 AT&T and T-Mobile stores nationwide, 41 percent of these stores are within one mile of each other. This creates a problem because, if the FCC approves this deal, some stores will have to be closed. That means you’re out of luck if you own one of the selected stores.
AT&T’s interest in T-Mobile is purely for its resources. The deal me...

Archos announced new G9 Android tablet series

Archos announced new G9 Android tablet series

Posted on Jun 24, 2011 by MG1

Archos has been one of the few companies that have been bringing tablets to market at incredibly low prices, and was one of the first to bring an Android tablet to market, even if it was barely notable. The company had released updated Android tablets for insanely low prices, but the build quality and materials used have all been questionable. Well, that may have changed this time around, as Archos recently announced the next generation of its Android tablets, the G9 series.
The two tablets, named the Archos 80 G9 and 101 G9, are definitely a step up in specifications from previous offerings and both pack some nice specifications. Both tablets differ in only the slightest of ways: the 80 G9...

HTC Glamor image leaks, eye candy for the ladies

HTC Glamor image leaks, eye candy for the ladies

Posted on Jun 24, 2011 by MG3

It's not entirely clear why when a company decides to make a product targeted to women, they usually just wrap it up in candy colors and fluff, as if the target market is Barbie.
In the case of the HTC Glamor, though, it makes sense, since the most likely buyers will be teenage girls, judging by the jolly colors in a leaked picture of HTC's upcoming feminine handset.
