LG Thrill 4G lands this summer on AT&T

LG Thrill 4G lands this summer on AT&T

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG1

It’s not much of a surprise but AT&T said that the LG Thrill 4G will land this summer with its glasses-free 3D display.
We first spotted the LG Thrill 4G as the Optimus 3D at Mobile World Congress and it boasts a “Tri-dual” architecture. That means it rocks a dual-core processor, dual-channel and dual-memory setup. While that’s a bit of marketing fluff, that does mean you can expect the Thrill 4G to be a powerful device when it does land on AT&T.

Games at Google revealed in job posting, takes a stab at social gaming

Games at Google revealed in job posting, takes a stab at social gaming

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Well, one of the few remaining sectors that Google has yet to conquer, gaming, will be Big G free no longer. The tech giant is looking for a product manager to man a new property called Games at Google. Obviously, with just a job posting to work with, details are scant, but we can tell you that the gaming platform will boast some social features -- an area where the Goog has struggled mightily. What don't we know? Just about anything else. Will it be a Game Center-like feature for Android phones? Or, perhaps, a web-gaming outlet for Chrome built with help from the folks at Zynga, who Google quietly partnered with back in the summer of oh-ten. Regardless, we're waiting with bated breath to fi...

Google Goggles updated to version 1.5

Google Goggles is one of those weird apps that has a bunch of niche uses, but may not be part of your daily rotation. It can do image searches for landmarks, famous pieces of art, and products. It can use optical character recognition (OCR) to "read" and translate text in a handful of languages. And, it can scan and launch QR codes. Google even claims that it is capable of facial recognition, but the feature simply hasn't been "turned on" due to privacy concerns.
Google Goggles has just been updated for Android bringing a few new cool features to the optical search app. Version 1.5 of Goggles has added: Russian text recognition, a search history map, and added options for copying results to...

New bill could force carriers to tell the truth about 4G

New bill could force carriers to tell the truth about 4G

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

4G is barely in its infancy and it has already been through so much. First it was fake, and then some solid lobbying on carriers’ parts convinced the International Telecommunication Union to sing a new tune that would allow telcos to call LTE, WiMAX and even certain 3G technologies “4G” without blatantly lying. Though 4G’s definition is now anything but clear, carrier marketing soon could be — new legislation currently in hands of the U.S. House of Representatives could potentially require U.S. wireless service providers to define guaranteed minimum data speeds that customers can expect of their networks. Since two tin cans and a piece of string can basically be called a 4G network according...

Verizon's 'DataGate' plans leaked in excruciating detail

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

With each and every passing day, the rumors surrounding Verizon's new "usage plans" are getting tougher to ignore. It's only been two days since we initially heard Big Red was ready to ride its unlimited data plans into the sunset in favor of switching to a newer, more usage-friendly model, and the leaks continue to flood in. This go-round, very official-looking docs that offer up a whole slew of details are in the open air. Many of the details echo what we've heard before: the data plans are the same price, starting at $30 for 2GB and working up to increments of 5GB for $50 and 10GB for $80; mobile hotspot access is an additional $20 and you'll get hooked up with an extra pair of gigs; fina...

The ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti Multiview is the latest mainstream graphics card capable of delivering a triple-display computing experience:

The company’s been struggling to play catch-up after Apple and Google started eating up its enterprise market. But, rushing its BlackBerry devices to market has caused more harm than good, as the half-baked firmware attracted lots of criticism. Now, a report from the Waterloo region in Canada, where RIM is based, reveals that 200 employees have just been let go today.

Amazon tablet with TI processor shipping as early as August?

For months now, DigiTimes has been fueling rumors of Amazon's first foray into the LCD tablet market. Today it ratchets up the specificity with sometimes contradictory claims that Quanta Computer will be responsible for assembling the tablet with a supposed TI (not NVIDIA) processor and Wintek (not EIH) touch panel among its components. According to DigiTimes, Amazon hopes to move some four million units in 2011 alone with plans to launch the new tablet as soon as August. Possible? Sure, likely even. But we'll wait for Bezos to sing before updating our holiday shopping lists.

Google plans to add real-time communication features into the popular Chrome web browser, according to an announcement on Google's Chromium-dev group.
The technology will be powered by its own WebRTC open-source project, which originated from Google's 2010 acquisition of Global IP Solutions (GIPS), and would allow for voice and video calling without the need for a plug-in or an external third-party application like Skype.
The obvious beneficiary for the project is Chrome OS, and specifically Gmail, which already offers video and voice chat through the browser using a proprietary plug-in. But Google has bigger plans for WebRTC.
The company hopes web developers will create voice and chat appl...
