Google 'retires' Health and PowerMeter, lets you save your vitals through 2012

Remember that Withings blood pressure monitor for iOS that we went hands-on with last week? It integrated with Google Health. The search giant's health management portal also paired with dozens of other services (a heaping handful can be seen in the image above) to aggregate and track all of your data, and share it with family members, friends, and doctors. The service didn't have the widespread impact that Google expected, however, so it's taking Health offline after the clock strikes midnight on January 1, 2012. You'll have another year to download your info, or send it directly to competing services.
Also on the chopping block is PowerMeter, a free energy monitoring tool that pairs with s...

ARM-Based Notebooks Are On The Way

ARM-Based Notebooks Are On The Way

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Notebooks

Unnamed sources are reporting that industry heavyweights Samsung, Toshiba, Acer and Asus are currently working on notebooks using ARM-based processors, one of which is a 13-inch solution from Asus using Nvidia's ARM-based Tegra and Google's Android OS.
But the sources also pointed out that ARM-based notebooks sporting an Android OS hit the market a few years back under the "smartbook" name. These essentially tanked because consumers expected the same compatibility and performance seen with traditional laptops. However, this new round of ARM-based notebooks should be more successful given that the processors are multi-core and storage capacities have inflated. And thanks to the beefed up proc...

Facebook snags hacker Geohot

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

iPhone hacker George Hotz – aka Geohot – is apparently now working at Facebook, though it’s unclear what his role at the social network entails. Best known for his hacks of the Apple iPhone, including unlocking SIM-locked handsets so that they can be used on other networks, as well as for being the target of a Sony lawsuit over PS3 modifications, Hotz confirmed his new role using his Facebook account.
TechUnwrapped flagged up the news after Greenpois0n developer P0sixninja mentioned it in a video podcast – the relevant segment of which you can see below. Techmeme’s Gabe Riviera then spotted the update on Hotz’s Facebook profile.

LulzSec IRC chat leaked; group says it was just a subcrew channel

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

The Guardian has posted the full text of what is reportedly a LulzSec IRC chat room log from May 31st to June 4th. LulzSec — the notorious hacking group responsible for recent attacks on Sony, the CIA’s website, and the U.S. Senate — has fired back claiming that the room’s sole purpose is for recruiting new members. The Guardian reported that LulzSec’s members include hackers “Kayla,” “Topiary” — who runs the group’s Twitter feed and writers the press releases — and “Sabu,” who services as the group’s father figure and mastermind. The chat log, from a room called #pure-elite, is filled with text from other IRC users including “jopie91,” “Neuron,” “Storm,” “trollpoll,” and “voodoo,” but LulzS...

Orange UK's Coming Soon page now lists HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy Mini

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

Orange UK will soon start selling two Android smartphones. The first of the two is the HTC Sensation, which we know as the monster phone thanks to its specs that include a dual-core processor, 4.3-inch qHD capacitive touchscreen, 8-megapixel camera, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, an array of sensors and so on. You name it, this baby has it. It’s one of the best smartphones announced to date, if not the best. We’ve no doubts Orange will offer the Sensation for free to anyone willing to commit on a plan starting at 30 or 35 GBP a month.
Then there’s the Samsung Galaxy Mini, which for many will be the first smartphone they ever bought. It should cost next to nothing, even free with some not-that-...

Facebook hits 750 million users milestone

Facebook hits 750 million users milestone

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

Facebook now has 750 million monthly active users worldwide, TechCrunch reported on Friday. That’s incredible growth since our June 1st story, which suggested that the social network was closing in on 700,000,000 users worldwide. In that report, emerging markets showed the most growth — Brazil’s user base jumped 11.4% in May alone — and the United States was the top country; U.S. users were responsible for 149.4 million Facebook accounts. Last July, Facebook announced that it had hit the 500 million user mark, but it hasn’t publicly revealed any figures since then. Facebook only measures active users and only counts those who have logged into the social network during the past 30 days.

LulzSec says good bye with leaks on AT&T's plans for 4G LTE enabled Apple iPad 3 and iPhone 5

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

The 6 anonymous hackers known as LulzSec said farewell to the public by revealing that among the information gleaned from their last day hacking was a leak of AT&T's internal documents. Going through the information, Jonathan at iFans found what appears to be information outing the LTE 4G enabled versions of the Apple iPad 3 and Apple iPhone 5.
A calendar that was part of the info release shows that next month, AT&T will have a production launch of its LTE service followed by a rollout of the service in 10 markets in September. A power point presentation discusses an Apple iPad 3 launching in the fall or next March. And since this is written under the heading "LTE status", it would probably...

Apple files another lawsuit against Samsung

Apple has fired-off another lawsuit against Samsung, once again claiming the manufacturer copied the iPhone and iPad designs for its own products.
In the latest round of the tit-for-tat legal battle, Apple has taken the fight to Samsung's home turf by filing suit at the Seoul District Court in South Korea.
The writ reiterates that it is "no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging.
"This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple's intellectual property when companies steal our ideas," it read.
Escalating war
The disagreement focuses on Samsung's range of Gal...

New PSN lawsuit claims Sony layoffs to blame for hacks

New PSN lawsuit claims Sony layoffs to blame for hacks

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

A second lawsuit over PSN hacks this week has accused Sony of cutting jobs whose absence may have worsened or contributed to the hack. A "substantial percentage" of Sony Online Entertainment, including some in the network operations center, were let go just two weeks before the April 19 incident that hit both SOE and PSN. Sony lowered its safeguards through job cuts just as the attacks came in, the lawsuit alleged.
An anonymous witness who worked for SCEA between 2006 and 2008, as well as SOE for almost half of 2010, claimed that Sony had a disproportionate stance on security. It took great care to protect the DevNetwork for companies building PlayStation games but didn't show nearly as much...

Hacker vs. Hacker: New Rival Claims to Out LulzSec Leader

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

The weekend is almost here, so it's time for yet another episode of Hacker vs. Hacker. In today's hacker spat, we've got a website down and an identity up. But is it for real? Nobody can know! It's deeply confusing!
Someone going by the nom de guerre th3j35t3r (why do hackers all have to use names that make my keyboard hurt? Hacker dudes: Please change all your names to Bill. Thx!) claims to have taken out the LulzSec website in a denial of service attack and posted information about an alleged LulzSec leader. th3j35t3r has been baiting LulzSec for some time on Twitter, now. The alleged LulzSec'er "Sabu," is purported to be someone named either Xavier Kaotico or Xavier de Leon. The site was ...

Microsoft updates Hotmail with more signature options, Gmail and Yahoo Mail keyboard shortcuts

Microsoft updates Hotmail with more signature options, Gmail and Yahoo Mail keyboard shortcuts

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

Okay, it's not as titillating as the time Microsoft added conversation view to Hotmail, but the outfit did just freshen up its email service with a handful of helpful tweaks. Topping the list is an assortment of shortcuts, including the ability to right click a message to reply, reply all, or forward (you could already do this for other things, like marking something as unread). Hotmail also now responds to some additional Gmail- and Yahoo Mail-specific keyboard shortcuts, such as "#" for deleting messages -- a Gmail trick. And the company is none too subtle about admitting it wants the service to be user-friendly for folks if -- or when -- they switch from Google or Yahoo. Rounding out the ...

IRS Databases Aren't all that Secure

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

An audit report (PDF download) conducted by the U.S. Treasury Inspector reveals that 2,200 IRS databases were considered vulnerable to potential cyberattack.
According to the L.A. Times the issue largely revolves around software maintenance of the databases, or a lack thereof:
The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said that an audit of IRS databases revealed that 2,200 databases the IRS employs to "to manage and process taxpayer data are not configured securely, are running out-of-date software, and no longer receive security patches."
The audit, completed in May but released publicly on Thursday, also said that the IRS had not completed its plans to scan its many databases f...

Apple confirms iCloud Web Interface

Apple confirms iCloud Web Interface

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

A week ago a report raised the question if the iCloud will roll-out without web facing interfaces. Apple did not announce or demo web interfaces for the iCloud, but I already argued back then that this is no reason that they would not be there.
Today TechCrunch spotted a FAQ about the transition for mobileMe users to the iCloud. In this FAQ Apple answers directly this question
Will I be able to access iCloud services on the web?
Yes. Web access to iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Find My iPhone will be available at icloud.com this fall.
So there you have it. Of course the iCloud has web front ends. If you happen to be a mobileMe user you will be happy to find out that you can keep your ...
