HTC EVO 3D lets you uninstall carrier-loaded applications without rooting
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCEVO 3D
Sprint's HTC EVO 3D, as most other carrier-subsidized phones, comes with all sorts of preinstalled applications, which, for the lack of a better word, are universally known as bloatware.
On Android devices you needed root access to get them out of your sight, if you didn't need any of those, which potentially voids the warranty, so a lot of users choose to just live with the unneeded nav apps or game zones the carriers are pushing onto your unsuspecting hardware. That's one of the prices to pay for a carrier subsidy, after all.
On the HTC EVO 3D, however, it seems that a different approach has been taken. Coming from users of the recently released 3D-enabled handset, most carrier apps, save ...

Thunderbolt gets Sense 3.0 through the back door
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCThunderBolt
Before HTC announced that the Thunderbolt wouldn't receive Sense 3.0, perhaps it should have consulted the dev community. That's because a determined group of modders have successfully massaged HTC's latest skin onto the popular Das BAMF Gingerbread ROM. The current iteration has some bugs, including a glitchy front-facing camera (that you can remedy by switching from widescreen to 4:3 capture), but it's now at release candidate status and awaiting a final coat of gloss. If you've got to have it now -- and have no interest in HTC's upcoming Android 2.3.4 build -- you'll need a rooted phone, S-Off status, and Clockwork Recovery to load the flashable ROM, along with the MR2 radio (preferably)....

Samsung Epic 4G to get the Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread update? Leaked firmware suggests so
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungEpic 4G
On the heels of the recently leaked Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread update for Samsung Captivate, SamFirmware managed to grab the same software for another member of the Galaxy S family – Sprint’s Epic 4G, which (if you recall) rocks a full side-sliding QWERTY keyboard in addition to the 4-inch touchscreen.
As you can imagine, this isn’t the official yet. Rather the process of updating will require some technical skills and there’s also a risk of your device being bricked if something goes wrong. In any case, you can’t hold IntoMobile responsible… A short disclaimer I had to add.

Nokia's Android flirtations revealed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsNOKIAGoogleAndroid
We don't know if this device is "super confidential" or not, but we've just come across yet another Nokia N9 lookalike with a non-MeeGo operating system on board. Well, it looks that way, anyhow. There's no way to verify that the Android homescreen we see above is a legitimate Gingerbread installation and not a mere screenshot (the resolution looks all wrong, for one thing), but the source of this image is the same Chinese fellow that posted a picture of Nokia's Windows Phone prototype, the Sea Ray, way back in May, so we're inclined to believe he's got an inside line on these things. Additionally, the undersized Android UI elements on the screen actually encourage us to believe that this is...

Skype coming to iPad soon
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPad 2
The second we knew that there would be a front-facing camera on the iPad 2, we all knew that Skype would get there eventually. Skype for the iPad isn't out just yet, and it doesn't have a set release date, but it looks as though it will be coming out very soon.
First, there was a video leaked previewing Skype for the iPad (below), then a Skype executive confirmed the imminent release when questioned by The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW). Rick Osterioh, Skype Vice President of Consumer and Product Design, told TUAW that Skype for the iPad is awaiting approval to the app store right now.
Skype for the iPad will be largely what we would expect, though there will be a few features that aren't ...

Apple releases iOS 5 beta 2
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
You heard that right. Apple’s just unleashed iOS 5 beta 2 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch units — for developers only, of course. We’re in the processing of upgrading, and we’ll let you know what we find. You guys do the same, alright?
With iTunes 10.5 beta 2, and iOS 5 beta 2, wireless iTunes sync now works.
Notifications on the lockscreen are redone — they’re much, much bigger for a single alert, then shows in list view for multiple alerts.
iMessage only works with iOS beta 2 both ways, but it’s super fast now. We’re guessing Apple changed the servers they used for this.
Thanks, Doug!

Droid 3 headed to Best Buy on July 14th?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaDROID 3
Red-eye alert, all ye Droid faithful! A leaked screenshot over at Droid Attic shows Motorola's worst kept secret -- the Droid 3 -- supposedly hitting Best Buy's shelves on July 14th. With all the unofficial leaks we've seen in the past few months, we have a pretty good idea of what this successor's got running under its QWERTY slider. Favoring a dual-core OMAP 4430 processor, a rear-facing 8 megapixel cam capturing video at 1080p, and baked with latest Gingerbread update, this black block of does shouldn't disappoint. Make note, VZW's new plans go into effect one week prior to this, so if you're clinging to that grandfathered plan, you can still pick this one up on-contract, and cross your t...

Intel joins in on Nortel patent auction; OK'd by the feds
Like UnlikeFiled in: Intel
Intel has become the latest company to get approval from the federal government to bid on Nortel's suite of wireless technology patents that go up for auction next week. Yesterday, it was reported that Apple had gained approval, while Google has had a bid in on the patents for some time now. The suite of patents cover technologies like 4G LTE and Wi-Fi, and are very attractive to any company in, or looking to get into, the wireless market (as is the case with Intel). The auction will begin on Monday.

Even though it’s still unclear if Android 3.1 is indeed causing a ruckus with the tablet, it’s now confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be launching on August 4 in the UK. Seeing that we’re just winding down with...
US consumers are getting their fill of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 as we speak, but as we’ve reported earlier in the month, the European launch of the Honeycomb flavored tablet has been pushed back to August due to alleged Android 3.1 issues.
Even though it’s still unclear if Android 3.1 is indeed causing a ruckus with the tablet, it’s now confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be launching on August 4 in the UK. Seeing that we’re just winding down with June a...

FTC may subpoena Google in anti-trust investigation
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
The Federal Communications Commission may subpoena Google during the next five days as part of an anti-trust investigation related to the company’s search and web advertising practices. According to The Wall Street Journal, it is only illegal to purchase or abuse a monopoly, and so a subpoena and an investigation aren’t particularly damning to Google. Reportedly, investigators will examine if the search giant has purposely pushed users towards using its own services, as opposed to those offered by its rivals, using its own online advertising and search network. “Google engages in anticompetitive behavior…that harms consumers by restricting the ability of other companies to compete to put the...

HTC EVO View 4G tablet updated with Netflix compatibility
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksHTCEVO View 4G
Sprint's just released HTC EVO View 4G tablet already has a software update available, but its for a good reason. The update adds compatibility for the Netflix for Android app.
According to Sprint, the EVO View 4G is one of the first Android tablets to have compatibility with the Netflix app. We went ahead and updated our EVO View 4G review unit, and, sure enough, the Netflix app is now available in the Android Market and works like a charm, allowing us to stream movies and TV shows and manage our Netflix instant queue right from the EVO View 4G.
EVO View 4G owners can head to the Systems Updates menu in the Settings app and select the HTC software update option to download and install the u...

Hacker claims to reveal identity of LulzSec leader
Like UnlikeA hacker known as “The Jester” claims to have revealed the identity of a LulzSec member who may be the group’s leader. Thirty-year-old Xavier Kaotico, also known as Xavier de Leon or “sabu,” has been outed as the hacker prankster group’s leader, though his role and involvement with LulzSec has not been confirmed. The man allegedly lives or has recently lived in New York City, and is an independant IT consultant specializing in Python programming, Linux development, network security and exploit development. LulzSec, a small group of hackers that has become the focus of the international technology media over the past few weeks, has claimed responsibility for carrying out a number of malicious...

FTC to put Google under a microscope, try to uncover anti-competitive ways?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google's drawn the ire of the Federal Trade Commission before for failing to follow its own privacy policies. Now, however, the Mountain View crew is apparently facing a formal inquiry from the FTC as it seeks information about Google's search and advertising business. The civil investigative demands are set to be sent out within the next five days, according to the Wall Street Journal, and the commission will be looking into whether Google's search engine illegally routs all those internet eyeballs scanning its site to its own services instead of those offered by competitors. Sound familiar? It should, because Google's under investigation for similar anticompetitive accusations made in Euro...

LulzSec Leaks Hundreds of Classified Arizona Police Documents in Attack Against Border Patrol
Like UnlikeLashing out against the "racial profiling anti-immigrant police state that is Arizona," LulzSec has released their newest data dump: "hundreds of private intelligence bulletins, training manuals, personal email correspondence, names, phone numbers, addresses and passwords belonging to Arizona law enforcement."
The release, entitled "Chinga La Migra" (Fuck the Border Patrol) is the first time LulzSec's purported to release personal information of government agents, rather than just disrupting their websites (see: CIA, US Senate). This is a powerful move. Home addresses are home addresses—about as personal as personal data gets. LulzSec's also clearly placed a political motive behind this thru...
