Samsung is rumored to be working on a high-end iPhone 5 rival, says Pop Herald. The phone, which may or may not be known as the Galaxy S II Plus, would sport a 1.4GHz processor instead of the 1.2GHz in the current S II. The iPhone 5 is expected to arrive in September, and would mean flagship handsets from competitors would be about six months behind.
There should also be 1GB of RAM onboard and Android 2.3.4 overlaid by the TouchWiz UI. Google Talk with video call support would come with the new OS build. The device, whatever its name, is expected to launch in August or September.
Samsung has already been having strong sales of the current S II and may have little incentive to upgrade the pho...

Acer lowering notebook shipments too as iPad bites deeper

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

Acer's significantly lowered estimates include full-size notebooks as well, part suppliers divulged Monday night. The PC builder is now planning to drop its total notebook shipments from 6.4 million to 5.4 million. About 80 percent of the drop slipped out to Digitimes is the original netbook plan, but 20 percent will come from regular portables.

Shipments should hit nearly 1.5 million in July and climb to as many as two million notebooks in August with a similar amount in September. The move should be enough to purge Acer's excess stock.
The shortfall is partly attributable to the "abnormalities" the company reported earlier, where unsold stock in Europe is being cleared out at a discount. ...

"These figures amount to 59,000 digital albums a day on average this year, compared to 42,000 in the first six months of 2010," said Martin Talbot, MD of the OCC.
"It's also true, however, that we should prepare for digital albums to co-exist with physical albums for some time to come.

Nokia N950: a N900 successor offered exclusively for developers

Despite what you’ve heard the Nokia N9 is not the only MeeGo smartphone in town. Nokia has quietly unveiled the N950, but with it one small caveat — it will be a developer-only device. Though it’s not destined for retail consumption, our inner N900 fanboy has us itching for a fix. Let’s take a look at what’s inside the Nokia N950, shall we?
At first glance the only difference between N9 and the N950 appears to be the addition of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Upon further inspection you’ll notice the N950 features a 4-inch TFT display while the N9 packs a more vibrant 3.9-inch AMOLED set.
In terms of build quality the N950 is forged from anodized aluminum whereas the N9 is encased in unibody p...

Supreme Court rules video games protected as free speech

Supreme Court rules video games protected as free speech

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

The US Supreme Court determined in a ruling (below) that video games were protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution. It struck down a California law that banned renting or selling games to those under 18. Judge Scalia and four supporting judges determined that games, like books, movies, and plays, get a message across through "fammiliar literary devices" and can't be censored solely because it contained violence.
"The most basic principle -- that government lacks the power to restrict expression because of its message, ideas, subject matter, or content... is subject to a few limited exceptions for historically unprotected speech, such as obscenity, incitement, and fighting words,"...

Microsoft has partnered with the BBC, BT, and British Sky Broadcasting to trial the delivery of mobile broadband Internet by utilizing empty radio spectrum normally used to deliver television signals. The so-called white space spectrum could be utilized to deliver additional mobile broadband services to supplement existing services struggling to keep pace with smartphone and tablet adoption.
Microsoft has developed the experimental technology at its Redmond headquarters, which uses the spectrum in the frequency range reserved for digital TV broadcasting. Its trial is taking place in Cambridge in the UK, which will be closely followed by UK and foreign regulators.
The aim of the current tria...

Nokia N5 leak hints at slow Symbian death

Just when you thought that Windows Phone 7 (with a bit of help from MeeGo) had kicked the last breath out of Symbian, the Nokia N5 - boasting an updated version of Symbian Anna - goes and leaks all over the web.
We know that the days of the Nokia and Symbian love affair are numbered, with the final signatures now in place for all developing and support of Symbian up to Accenture from October 2011.
But we also know that Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has said the company plans an additional 10 Symbian-powered handsets over the next 12 months.
And it looks like the N5 could be the first of these handsets, with rumours of the N6 and N7 to follow doing the rounds as well, after it was snapped by Blurryc...

How Windows 8 touch relies on IE10

How Windows 8 touch relies on IE10

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

Is the full-screen touch interface for Windows 8 'just a shell' on top of Windows?
Not really; there isn't an application running like Media Center that you could shut down and it isn't just a browser – this is another mode for the interface that you can switch in and out of. But it is the browser that powers it.
Apps for the immersive Windows 8 interface are written in HTML5, JavaScript and CSS (and presumably, Silverlight – this is the IE10 engine and there's no reason for it not to run plug-ins) and packaged up in an AppX container.
In fact, if you dig into the web standards support that Microsoft has added to IE10, it's clear to see that despite the resemblance to the Silverlight-powered...

Not every idea that comes out of the Googleplex catches on and becomes a massively successful online platform.
For every Gmail there's a Google Knol, and for every Google Earth there's a Google Wave.
And now we've got two more Google platforms to add to the scrapped-services pile; Google Health and Google PowerMeter - both of which have been confirmed as doomed by the Big G itself.
"In the coming months, we’re going to retire two products that didn’t catch on the way we would have hoped, but did serve as influential models," read a statement on the Google Blog.
"Both were based on the idea that with more and better information, people can make smarter choices, whether in regard to managing p...

Filed in: Cell PhonesNOKIAX6

Nokia released a new software update for the X6, its first Symbian S60 5th Edition smartphone with a capacitive touchscreen. Firmware version 32 (or 3.2) brings several performance enhancements while at the same time making the device more stable than ever. In other words, many (if not all) of the known/reported bugs have been fixed and some of the apps updated.
Presuming you own the Nokia X6, go to “Settings” -> “Tools” -> “Software update” or dial *#0000#, hit “Options” -> “Check for update” and take it from there. It is advisable to do this with your battery fully charged and while in a hotspot (so that the download is fast).
Before proceeding make sure to backup all of your data, just in...

Shortly after MasterCard announced plans to become entangled with Google Wallet (and a few months after those ambitious Isis plans were shelved), it looks as if the aforesaid company is diving into yet another mobile payment arena. And this time, it's personal. MasterCard and CSI Enterprises already offer a smattering of customized business cards for those with highly specific needs, and soon that partnership will extend to iOS, Android and BlackBerry OS. We've confirmed that the CSI Virtual MasterCard app is currently scheduled to launch in July, presumably enabling folks with a GlobalVCard to use their mobile device of choice to make payments. HTC claims Windows Phone 7 dominance, sells 1 in 2 WP7 handsets

HTC claims Windows Phone 7 dominance, sells 1 in 2 WP7 handsets

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

There have been much speculation regarding the contribution each Windows Phone 7 OEM makes to the ecosystem.
Now HTC’s senior executive vice president Fred Liu told CENS HTC is the major player in the Windows Phone 7 market, selling 1 out of every 2 Windows Phones sold.
This is of course despite 4 other OEMs, including giants like LG and Samsung, vying for the business.
HTC also went on to say they sell 2 out of every 10 Android phones. This allows us to see that little more than 10% of HTC’s business is from Microsoft’s OS, which is clearly not much*.
Windows Phone 7 therefore suffers from being dominated by one OEM who is not deeply invested in the OS. With Nokia jumping in head first...
