FCC Maintains Neutral Stance on Wireless Industry

FCC Maintains Neutral Stance on Wireless Industry

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

The Federal Communications Commission recently offered its yearly report on the state of competition in the wireless industry. As it concluded in 2010, the FCC took a neutral stance to the industry. This means it didn't rate the industry competitive, but it didn't say the industry was anti-competitive, either. In its report, the FCC said, "The mobile wireless ecosystem is sufficiently complex and multi-faceted that it would not be meaningful to try to make a single, all inclusive finding regarding effective competition that adequately encompasses the level of competition in the various interrelated segments, types of services, and vast geographic areas of the mobile wireless industry." Both ...

Ericsson trials LTE Advanced with 10x the speed in Sweden

Ericsson trials LTE Advanced with 10x the speed in Sweden

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Ericsson has demonstrated the next generation of LTE networks in Sweden that promises 10 times the speed of the already fast LTE that we know today.
Called LTE Advanced, the new network uses larger chunks of carrier spectrum and extended multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) functionality to hit speeds of up to 900Mbps in the trials. The demonstration used 60MHz allocations of spectrum, compared to the 20MHz that is currently used by LTE today.
Ericsson expects the new LTE Advanced technology to be commercially viable by 2013. At that point we can expect AT&T to throw its hands up in the air and say there is just not enough spectrum available, as it is already having trouble piecing togethe...

HTC EVO 3D listed as “coming soon” on Vodafone UK's web page

HTC EVO 3D listed as “coming soon” on Vodafone UK's web page

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Well, this didn't take long. The GSM version of the HTC EVO 3D may have been announced only yesterday, but Vodafone UK is already teasing us with a listing of the smartphone on its web page. Teasing seems to be the most suitable term for it as the EVO 3D is only listed in the “coming soon” section with no word regarding its price or availability, at least for now. However, if the rumor that we heard not long ago turns out to be true, it wouldn't be long before the smartphone hits Vodafone's shelves.
Currently, Vodafone UK appears to be the only European carrier to have the EVO 3D in its portfolio, but other carriers are very likely to follow suit. First of all, during its announcement yester...

Apple iOS 5 is slowly but surely coming together as beta 2, which was released to developers recently, includes Wi-Fi sync and the framework for over-the-air (OTA) updates. Leaked Nokia Roadmap Promises Four New Symbian Handsets In Q3

Leaked Nokia Roadmap Promises Four New Symbian Handsets In Q3

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Nokia is all about the ladies. With Symbian, we have Anna and Belle iterations, with more girly names to follow in alphabetical order. And of course, who could forget that absolutely ridiculous female-targeted N8 commercial? It’s certainly burned into the corners of my memory, unfortunately. Today we came across a leaked roadmap for upcoming Symbian handsets, and we were surprised to see that Nokia has taken the lady-love a step further, giving girly names (at least for now) to four different upcoming Symbian phones.
There isn’t much to say yet about the Nokia Helen, Cindy, Zeta, and Fate, but one thing that was made pretty clear on the leaked document was that each will get a 1GHz processor...

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by I.P.K.

We know you're going to be shocked -- shocked! -- to hear this, but NVIDIA's gone and refreshed its high-end line of GeForce GTX cards. The GTX 580M takes the place of the GTX 485M, and NVIDIA's bragging that it's the "fastest notebook GPU ever," capable, we're told, of besting the Radeon HD 6970M's tesselation performance by a factor of six.

Acer's Cromia Chromebook has had its US launch details narrowed down Monday night. The 11.6-inch Chrome OS notebook, now badged as the Cromia 700 or AC700, should be available "this month" in Wi-Fi trim for $350, making it the most affordable Chromebook in the US. The 3G version now has a less definite release date and will only ship sometime in the summer for $450.
The notebook has much the same performance as the Samsung Series 5 and carries the dual-core 1.5GHz Atom chip as well as 2GB of RAM. An emphasis on the cloud leaves just a 16GB SSD for storage. Acer does provide an HDMI video out for full-size mirroring and affords a 1.3-megapixel webcam, a pair of USB ports, and a four-in-one ca...

It's hard not to appreciate AKG K3003 earbuds, whose casings are milled from single pieces of stainless steel. And there's merit in spending a decent chunk of cash on a quality product. But when you reach the €1000 mark, a cost/benefit analysis may show signs diminishing returns.

Mitsubishi's new all-in-one set crams 500GB HDD and Blu-ray recorder into tiny package

Mitsubishi's new all-in-one set crams 500GB HDD and Blu-ray recorder into tiny package

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

Mitsubishi's new Real LCD-22BLR500 TV is hardly the first set packed with a built-in Blu-ray recorder and hard drive, but it's certainly one of the smaller ones we've seen. The 22-inch 1,366 x 768 LED-backlit display is probably too tiny for your average living room, but cramming the 500GB HDD and optical dive in the base helps it keep a thin profile and a stable footprint that could fit perfectly in a small bedroom or dorm. Around back are a bevy of inputs, including a USB jack, a pair of HDMI ports, an SD slot, Ethernet, and i.Link. Sadly, this compact all-in-one TV will be a Japan-only affair when it hits shelves on July 21st for around ¥110,00 (about $1,360).

Apple Now Number One Mobile Brand In Australia

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

The Apple brand continues to surge when it comes to mobile devices despite the growing competition. According to a new report from IDC, the first quarter 2011 results show that Apple has become the number one mobile brand in Australia for the very first time. The market there has mainly been dominated by Nokia, but this year the Symbian platform has seen a huge tumble along with a dip in demand for feature phones.
Apple comes in first place in Australia’s smartphone market with 40% market share after an almost 10% increase quarter over quarter. Android comes in second place with nearly 30% of the market while Nokia has plunged to third place with 22% of the market.

Acer's Android 3.1 (codenamed Honeycomb) update for its Iconia Tab A500 tablet has leaked out. It first appeared on the Chinese website bbs.gfan.com While this update isn't official in the sense that Acer has not yet released it via its own channels, it is the real deal.
