HP offers $50 off purchase of TouchPad to webOS early adopters

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Those of you who took a chance on webOS early on and bought a Palm Pre, Pre Plus, Pixi, or Pixi Plus will be rewarded for your efforts in the form of a $50 discount on a new 32GB TouchPad tablet from HP.
HP is sending out emails to those early adopters offering them a $50 mail-in rebate with the purchase of a new 32GB TouchPad. Purchases must be made by July 31, and proof of purchase of one of the aforementioned phones will be required, so you had better have saved that possibly two-year-old receipt. The details of the offer will be in the emails that users receive, so if you are a current (or former) webOS soldier, check your inbox and maybe your spam filter too.
It's nice to see HP rewardi...

1PlusV, a French search company, has filed a lawsuit against Google asking for 295 million euros ($421 million). “Between 2007 and 2010, no less than 30 vertical search engines created by 1plusV were black-listed, some of which showed significant business potential,” the company said in its lawsuit. According to Reuters, 1PlusV plans to file the official complaint on Tuesday or Wednesday with the Paris commercial court. Google has been taking a lot of legal heat recently. In the United States, Google recently addressed the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s investigation into its business practices, and it has also faced a similar lawsuit in Europe. In March, Microsoft announced that it was fil...

AT&T HTC Status in the wild

AT&T HTC Status in the wild

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

We’ve just been sent a shot of AT&T’s upcoming Facebook-centric device, the AT&T HTC Status. The device looks pretty identical to the European HTC ChaCha, save for the obvious AT&T branding. We exclusively reported the HTC Status would be the official name of the device here in the U.S., and now that it’s confirmed, we have to say, it’s one of the most logical names for a device we can think of in recent memory. One more shot of the Facebook phone that’s not a Facebook phone, after the break.

Qualcomm holds the lead in smartphone CPU share

Qualcomm holds the lead in smartphone CPU share

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

The smartphone market is booming, that's not really news any more. Smartphones are mobile computers, that's not too surprising either. Smartphone processors are packing some serious heat these days. It's close to the point where a mobile CPU will be more powerful than the CPU in a laptop from just a couple years ago (likely when the quad-core CPUs start to hit.) Texas Instruments had been the king of the smartphone CPU hill, but Qualcomm dethroned TI last year and is looking to hold that spot.
According to a report from Strategy Analytics, Qualcomm took first place in Q4 of 2010, and has retained its lead over Texas Instruments through Q1 of 2011. The growth of Qualcomm in this market has b...

Although it’s far from commanding a dominant market share in the U.S., Nokia’s Ovi Store keeps growing like crazy. According to this post on Nokia Developer’s portal, more than 300,000 new Nokia accounts are created daily, and consumers are downloading 6 million mobile apps and content every day!
In total, there are about 48,000 apps in the Ovi Store with almost 1,000 new added every week. And it’s not just the Symbian users who download apps and mobile content — Series 40 device (feature phone) owners are jumping on board as well, with the number of downloads coming from that group growing 35% in the last two months, accounting for about a quarter of all downloads.
By the end of May 2011, m...

Orange UK's HTC Desire HD getting Android 2.3 update as we speak

Orange UK's HTC Desire HD getting Android 2.3 update as we speak

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Orange UK and HTC have started rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates for the Desire HD. If you’re in the “affected” group you can already check to see whether a new update is available. If it isn’t – don’t worry. I’m sure HTC’s servers are dying at the moment as the company tries to push the software to all users.
You probably know what Gingerbread brings, so I won’t repeat it here. Still I’ll mention the improved Copy/Paste which actually makes the functionality usable.
As usual, we remind you it’s good practice to backup all of your PIM data (contacts and calendars) before updating. Your stuff may be in the cloud, but having a local copy is always a plus. When you’re done with that —...

Motorola Mobility downgraded by analysts

Motorola Mobility downgraded by analysts

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Motorola

Motorola Mobility has been among the front runners of Android, but despite the fact that it has released a couple of competitive Android devices, BMO Capital Markets analyst Tim Long downgraded the company from a “market perform” rating to an “underperform” rating. The analyst stressed that growing competition in the smartphone market will impact the company’s future results.
Initially, it was HTC and Moto competing in the Android market, but they've been joined by the other big names in the industry like Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson. Long expects each of these to ship more phones than Motorola in this quarter. He also based his downgrade on the fact that Moto's lack of global reach is beco...

LulzSec's last lulz: Malware for all those who downloaded hackers final plunder

LulzSec's last lulz: Malware for all those who downloaded hackers final plunder

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

The small group of hackers known as Lulz Security, or simply “LulzSec,” would never disband without one final round of fun. BGR reported on Monday that the group’s reign of terror was coming to an end after 50 lul-filled days. During that period of time, LulzSec released data stolen in a series of online breaches with targets ranging from Sony to the U.S. Government. In its coup de grâce, LulzSec released a stash of stolen data from a variety of targets, including AT&T, Disney and the U.S. Navy. But data obtained through online breaches wasn’t the only thing LulzSec stuffed into the file; a directory named “BootableUSB” also contained a variety of malware including trojans and worms. While “...

T-Mobile Rolls Out HSPA+ In 7 New Regions — Is Yours One?

Another day, another carrier expanding their 4G network. This time around, it’s T-Mobile… which means calling it “4G” is technically a bit of a stretch, but hey, we’ve beat that horse enough at this point.
The latest regions to show up on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ coverage map: Chico, Calif.; Redding, Calif.; Barnstable, Mass.; Vineland, N.J.; Lancaster, Penn.; Ogden, Utah, and Winchester, Va.
If nothing else, T-Mobile customers at Chico State should be glad that they can totally send each other regrettable text messages, like, way faster now.

FCC report doesn't tip how it will rule on AT&T, T-Mobile deal

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: T-MobileAT&T

A new report from the Federal Communications Commission isn’t tipping its hand on how it will come down on the potentially huge AT&T, T-Mobile deal.
The governmental agency said, “a merger can potentially form a stronger provider that restrains competitors from engaging in anticompetitive behavior, or may increase the likelihood that the merged firm may itself, or in coordination with other firms, would obtain or maintain market power.” So, basically the FCC is saying the AT&T, T-Mobile deal could be a good thing or it could be a bad thing. Thanks, guys!

Samsung’s Chromebook is hitting UK shores this week, but how does it work? What else will be available that uses Chrome? And what about the data?
All is revealed after the break. Don’t buy a Chromebook until you’ve read it!
Chrome is Google’s operating system that’s always online. That’s right, you do everything through the Cloud (hello, Google Docs!), meaning super quick start up times, and no headaches if your laptop crashes, as everything is always backed up. You can also access your documents wherever you are, as long as you can get online, so no need to have that vital USB key with you.

Intel keeps MeeGo alive, Atom-powered Ice Cream Sandwich device due Q1 2012?

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Nokia's N9 might have received generally warm reception, but the company's CEO has explicitly said that even if the device is successful, the Finns will ditch the platform in favor of Windows Phone, but even in the current light of events, Intel remains MeeGo's biggest loyalist. It has reiterated plans to continue working on the system with plans laid out through the second quarter of 2012, according to market watchers quoted by DigiTimes.
Intel plans to leverage its insight from PCs to MeeGo-running netbooks and tablets, but the company's plans are even broader as Meego version 1.3 comes with support for smart TVs, car infotainment and multimedia phones in the last quarter of 2011.

Nokia Money finally starts shipping after a nearly 2 year wait, comes preloaded on the X1-01 in India

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Nokia announced “Nokia Money” back in late August 2009 and with it the promise to deliver a service that would let anyone with a mobile phone send and receive money using nothing more than a text message or phone call. Here we are, several days before the start of July 2011, and the Finnish handset maker has just now announced that Nokia Money is finally coming to market; India only for now. The service works thanks to partnerships with Union Bank of India, Yes Bank, and Obopay, which Nokia invested roughly $70 million in during March 2009. What about devices? The first handset to ship with Nokia Money preloaded will be the X1-01, one of Nokia’s first dual SIM devices, but nearly every phone...

Google now activates 500,000 Android devices per day, on track to hit 1 million per day in October

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

On May 10th at the 2011 Google I/O conference, the search engine company announced that they were activating over 400,000 Android devices every single day. Today, via a tweet from Andy Rubin, the father of Android, pictured above wearing glasses, we now know that number is up to 500,000 per day, and more importantly it’s growing at a rate of 4.4% per week. Using some basic maths (500,000 x 1.044 and counting the number of times we hit the equal button on our calculator until it shows a number over 1 million, then adding that number to 26, the current week of the year we’re in) we’ve tabulated that by the end of October the number of Android devices being activated per day should equal just o...
