Acer Iconia Tab A500 gets the snip down to 16GB

Acer Iconia Tab A500 gets the snip down to 16GB

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Acer has unveiled a new version of its Iconia Tab A500, coming with 16GB of internal storage as opposed to the original model's 32GB.
It also comes with a shiny new price tag, available for £350 – that's undercutting the 16GB iPad 2 by £50.
The Iconia Tab A500 is an Android Honeycomb tablet, and the new iteration still comes with a 10.1-inch display, 1080p output, HDMI port and aluminium casing.
Bulky bear
With a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, it should still provide the solid 3.5 star performance that we evaluated on the 32GB model in our official TechRadar review.
Sadly, the tablet's bulky design, which we weren't very impressed with, will also be present and correct in the memory-lig...

T-Mobile confirms myTouch 4G Slide, touts powerful camera

T-Mobile confirms myTouch 4G Slide, touts powerful camera

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

After a very brief tease, T-Mobile has already unveiled the myTouch 4G Slide. The Android 2.3 slider is as powerful as the HTC Sensation 4G with its 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon and 1080p video but has a very heavy camera emphasis, most of all in apps. The eight-megapixel sensor is back-illuminated and has a bright f2.2 aperture; the custom software also cuts out shutter lag and adds extras not always seen on phones, such as HDR (high dynamic range), sweep panoramas, and continuous shooting.
The phone runs on the same Sense 3.0 custom interface layer as the Sensation but with a slew of T-Mobile apps on top. An upgraded "genius" button versus the older Slide kicks in a complete Dragon Dictatio...

BlackBerry Bold Touch UK release date revealed

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Three and Carphone Warehouse have both estimated BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 UK release dates, suggesting that the touchscreen BlackBerry will arrive this summer.
Three has listed the hybrid QWERTY handset as arriving in September, while Carphone Warehouse is a bit more optimistic, expecting the Bold Touch to land in August.
RIM is yet to release a smartphone into the market this year, concentrating its efforts on the QNX-running BlackBerry PlayBook tablet instead.
Potential
The company's fortunes have not fared too well in the meantime, with its stock dropping like a lead balloon after poor financial results and the threat of job cuts imminent.
The BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900, though, is not ...

Google launches all out social networking assault with Google+

Google launches all out social networking assault with Google+

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Social networking has long been Google's white whale. The company has done plenty of dabbling in the space, releasing Orkut, which has failed to catch on in the US, and rolling out Buzz to the relative indifference of its massive user base. Announced today after seemingly endless leaks, Google+ represents a major push for the software giant. The service began showing itself to a smattering of users last night, as a black bar across the top of various of the company's properties. A "+You" button on the far left of the bar currently brings you to the service's landing page, offering a tour of the many features that fall under the Google+ umbrella. Get to know the services better after the brea...

T-Mobile Nexus S Finally Gets Google Talk Video Chat Over 3G/4G

T-Mobile Nexus S Finally Gets Google Talk Video Chat Over 3G/4G

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Google Talk and Apple FaceTime both offer nice video calling services, but they differ in that FaceTime requires a Wi-Fi connection to work. Google’s offering was more ideal, but it didn’t quite pan out for T-Mobile customers. Since its launch back in May, Nexus S owners with the carrier have not been able to video chat over the cellular network. Well, that has changed today.
The video chat feature was first introduced in May for Android 2.3.4 devices, which meant the Google Nexus S. Owners of the device on the WiMAX network had no problem using the feature on their cellular networks, but for unspecified reasons, the service would not work on T-Mobile. T-Mobile Nexus S owners still had to re...

RIM scraps 10-inch PlayBook to focus on QNX-powered superphone?

RIM scraps 10-inch PlayBook to focus on QNX-powered superphone?

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

BlackBerry PlayBook enthusiasts will want to cuddle up with their favorite blanket and a carton of ice cream, as the 10-inch version of RIM's tablet may have been given the axe. N4BB reports that its development was recently cancelled to focus on an upcoming QNX-based "superphone," said to feature a 1.2GHz single-core processor (same as on the Bold Touch 9900) and a 4.3-inch HD-quality display. It's no secret that phones powered by this platform are on the roadmap, but scrapping a PlayBook project in its behalf could indicate the company's elevated desire to get it to market even sooner than originally planned. Anything less than two cores, however, will be an unpleasant surprise; company re...

Anonymous Hits Universal Music And Viacom

Anonymous Hits Universal Music And Viacom

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Let the hackathon continue with Anonymous now in the driver's seat after LulzSec called it quits. This time the target is not the small country of Anguilla, but the major media companies, Viacom and Universal Music.
The group of hackers released information they grabbed from Universal Music Group including company information and application data. There was also a handful of usernames and (tsk, tsk) plain text passwords from umusic.com users. The Viacom dump was a bit more ho-hum, containing only a bunch of scripts and information about its servers.
Neither leak is a major security breach like that of Sony, but it is publicly embarrassing for the two media giants.

Windows Phone is first platform to get AmazonFresh app for grocery shopping

Windows Phone is first platform to get AmazonFresh app for grocery shopping

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

This app is sort of interesting, but the concept is certainly not new. There have been online grocery shopping services before and they have all eventually gone under. Amazon is trying the online grocery thing out again and looking to get the service onto smartens with a new app. You might think that the place to start would be to make the app for the iPhone or Android smartphones. Amazon has chosen Windows Phone as the place to start with the AmazonFresh app.
AmazonFresh is the name of the Amazon grocery shopping service. This actually makes sense when you realize that the grocery delivery service is only in Seattle right now. Seattle is home to Microsoft and you can bet that compared to ot...

Google+ Android app in the Market

Google+ Android app in the Market

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Google has unveiled their new social layer today, and it is called Google+. The trouble is that it is only open to a select few invitees, and those of us who have been invited are not yet allowed to write about the product in detail. That said, if you are a lucky invitee, be sure to grab the new Google+ app from the Android Market.
The app includes the basic features of the service including Circles (how you choose who you share things with), Stream (shared items), Instant Upload and Huddle. Those last two are the really interesting features. Instant Upload does exactly what it says and automatically uploads photos and video from your Android device, so you can easily share them with others...
