Europe plans on eliminating roaming fees by 2015

When the European Union was formed the goal was to eliminate the need for multiple currencies and to improve trade between nations. As the years have gone by however, the EU has become similar to the United States of America in that there’s regulation that’s passed by high ranking elected officials which all 27 members of the EU need to follow. This has caused a massive conservative movement to form, composed of people who wish to how life was before the EU, but that’s another topic of discussion all together. One of favorite EU officials is Viviane Reding, who hails from Luxembourg and is currently serving as European Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, but before ...

Now you can get an early prototype iPhone 4 on eBay

Now you can get an early prototype iPhone 4 on eBay

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

If you've ever wondered how a possibly early build of the iPhone4 looks like, despite not being able to activate it or operate it in any way, now you can get yours on eBay for over $1,700.
The device carries a product number DF1692, a unique identification given to each Apple employee, so you might also expect to get contacted by Apple, but for the time being the auction is alive and well.
Visually, the prototype iPhone 4 mimics the looks of the final device with the only notable difference being the lack of “+” and “-” signs on the volume buttons. No activation also means that the amount of memory on the handset is a guessing game. The seller, Jtmaxo, claims to be a licensed phone repairme...

FCC clears Sharp's Galapagos 7-inch Android tablet

FCC clears Sharp's Galapagos 7-inch Android tablet

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NotebooksSHARP

Sharp is looking to enter the overhyped tablet market with its own product. The rumor says it that the Japanese company will launch not one but few tablets, all of which will rely on the Android platform.
Now we have FCC to confirm there is some merit in these stories, with a 7-inch tablet called “Galapagos” getting the Commission’s seal of approval. Yep this means the device is ready to be introduced on the U.S. soil, though it doesn’t mean that will happen soon. Quite the contrary, we’ve been seeing quite a few mobile products that were never introduced in the U.S. and then some which were not launched anywhere in the world. We’re hoping that won’t be the case here and that soon enough we’...

Acer working on its slider tablet?

Acer working on its slider tablet?

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Acer

We’ve all seen the Asus Eee Pad Slider (pictured above) though not all of us want to have one. The Transformer is easier to carry around thanks to its detachable keyboard, which you may not need every day. However, it seems Acer likes the idea of a slider tablet and is apparently preparing to introduce such a device later this year. The information comes from Digitimes which heard it from “sources in the upstream supply chain.” According to their intel, Acer’s upcoming tablet will rock a 10-inch screen and launched in the fourth quarter of this year.
The idea is to make a differentiating product which is not “yet another 10-inch tablet” like Motorola Xoom or Acer’s own Iconia Tab A500 for th...

Verizon data charges leak continues, $30 tethering for 4G customers

Verizon data charges leak continues, $30 tethering for 4G customers

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

The scan above purports to show a Verizon customer brochure that will appear in stores next Thursday, revealing nothing beyond the detailed leaks we've already reported but at least providing some reassuringly crinkled corroboration of the salient details. New customers will barred from the happy land of unlimited data, and will instead have to cough up tiered monthly fees ranging from $10 for 75MB up to $80 for 10GB, plus an extra $20 for tethering rights. In a separate turn to this tale, we hear that customers who want to tether to a 4G handset will have to pay $30 per month to keep Big Red happy. This might come as a shock if you've been living it up on the free tethering offer that ends ...

Why Is Apple's $49 Thunderbolt Cable So Expensive?

Why Is Apple's $49 Thunderbolt Cable So Expensive?

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

And you thought Monster Cables were expensive. Third-party products that make use of Apple's proprietary Thunderbolt connection have finally hit the market—or, rather, the Apple Store. And if you want to use devices like Promise's Thunderbolt-equipped multi-bay storage arrays, you're going to need a Thunderbolt cable to power the connection.
Don't bother hitting up your local electronics retailer or surfing over to Monoprice, however: Thunderbolt cables are currently only available from Apple, and they're going to set you back a pretty penny for a two-meter hunk of wire. Apple's listed a single Thunderbolt cable for $49 on the Apple Store, which might very well be the defining characteristic...

Hacker Allegedly Leaks Part of Florida's Voter Database

Hacker Allegedly Leaks Part of Florida's Voter Database

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

This is a doozy, even as it's still unverified. According to Anonymous, hacker @Abhaxas just leaked a lengthy text file revealing part of Florida's voter database. Included are voter statistics, candidates, and electoral race data.
In the release, Abhaxas writes:
So, this is a little ironic. Here is inside details of florida voting systems. Now.. who still believes voting isn't rigged? If the United States Government can't even keep their ballot systems secure, why trust them at all? FAIL!
It's not clear how it was accomplished, but the hack brings back fond memories of the easily-hacked diebold machines of yesteryear. While the information detailed doesn't contain links or add much context,...

Leaked iPad 2 jailbreak available now? (updated: better wait)

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Can't say it happened at Mach 3, but the iPad 2 jailbreak that we saw teased back in mid-March seems to have made its way out into the wild at long last. According to the video hosted up just past the break, JailbreakMe 3.0 is now available with support for the iPad 2. It's bruited that the version making its way around now was leaked by a beta tester (read: it ain't the final build), and we're seeing mixed success / failure stories in the related YouTube comments. We'd encourage the daring to tap the links below in order to get started, and if you do, let us know how it all works out below. Per usual, you'd be doing yourself a solid by fully syncing and backing things up before diving off t...

Facebook, Hulu partnership accidentally clicks 'security breach' instead of 'Like'

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Even though there's a For Sale sign in the window Hulu isn't taking a break and today it unveiled a new partnership with Facebook to make its library of TV shows and movies more social. Adding Facebook Connect (competitor Netflix may be on the board, but it's still working on adding the button) should let the social network log you in, customize things based on preferences from you and your friends, and share time-coded likes and comments. Unfortunately what actually happened for some users was that they were suddenly given access to someone else's Hulu account, a problem documented by both AVRev and NewTeeVee. According to a second blog post, due to approximately 50 users being affected Hul...

Motorola Droid X2 facing chronic overheating problems

Motorola Droid X2 facing chronic overheating problems

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

A new investigation has suggested that the Motorola Droid X2 may have an inherent overheating problem. Following reports from forums that it was getting too hot, Geek ran temperature tests against six separate units. One got so hot running Google Music at 110F that it shut down to protect the processor, while another doing 3G streaming also failed out; others behaved similarly.
The issue may be linked to software. Trying games like Galaxy of Fire 2 doesn't cause the problem even after an hour.
Motorola and Verizon claim they can't reproduce the issue on their own devices. Stories from Droid X2 owners encountering the problem, though, suggest the issue isn't consistent and may be a phone-by-p...

Sony shows PS Vita using facial recognition for video chat

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Sony is currently demonstrating the facial recognition capabilities of the company's PlayStation Vita gaming handheld. A technology preview at the Game Tools & Middleware Forum 2011 in Tokyo, the gaming company showed how the Vita can track facial movements and use the information to guide avatar movements during a video chat session.

It is unclear if the company is planning to launch avatar-based video chat as an actual feature on the production Vita. The company recently noted that it was still evaluating non-gaming capabilities, such as web-based video playback and Skype audio chat.

'Indestructible' Botnet Claims Are Exaggerated

'Indestructible' Botnet Claims Are Exaggerated

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Kaspersky Lab's report of an "indestructible" botnet that uses fake antivirus protection to overtake other botnets, are exaggerated, says another security researcher, Sophos.
In a Naked Security blog post, researcher Paul Ducklin said that while no malware is "indestructible," the current strain of TDSS malware is unlikely to affect computer users who patch regularly and use a "decent and up-to-date" anti-virus.
"Sensible security precautions can stop you getting infected in the first place," he wrote.
Furthermore, cleaning it out isn't too difficult with top anti-virus software. You don't event have to wipe your hard drive or re-install Windows.
On Thursday, Kaspersky Lab reported a new str...
