Picasa Granted Nearly Unlimited Storage Thanks to Google+

Filed in: Google

The changes kicked off by the Google+ launch continue to reverberate through other Google products. Google’s photo sharing and storage service, Picasa is getting a change for the better. For users of Google+, any photos uploaded to the social service are stored on Picasa and there is no storage limit. That’s right, nearly unlimited storage.
There are a few restrictions on the nature of the content, though. Images are scaled down to no larger than 2048x2048 pixels, but video up to 1080p and less than 15 minutes in length is allowed. Images manually uploaded to Picasa that are larger than allowed will count against the 1GB of free Picasa space. After that, all photos will be resized.

BBC execs campaign to stop writers and actors joining Twitter (on no they're not)

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

A group of BBC executives are said to be spurring on a company wide initiative to stop actors, writers and talent from joining social networking website Twitter.
The move comes after increasing numbers of Twitter reveals from high profile actors relating to BBC projects in the future. Most recent was Sophie Ellis Bextor, who announced her appearance alongside Sting in Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's new Life's Too Short show. There was also the recent announcement by the BBC's head of communications on Twitter regarding plans for a new series of Doctor Who, which resulted in an ongoing feud with Private Eye over the series.
The Guardian is quoting sources as saying that the BBC is push...

Samsung gobbles 61% of 3D TV market

Samsung gobbles 61% of 3D TV market

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TVsSamsung

The 3D TV market is hardly booming today with the sets not selling as well as TV makers had expected. This is due to a number of reasons including the lack of 3D content and the fact that the tech is more expensive than most consumers are willing to pay today. That will change and 3D TV will become more and more common as the tech matures and gets cheaper and better.
The market may not be as strong as TV makers had hoped, but Samsung has over 60% of what market for the sets there is. Samsung claims that its unit and dollar share for the 3D TV market in the May 22 to June 18 period was 61%. That percentage includes both LED and Plasma 3D TVs. NPD has Samsung at 50% of the unit and dollar mark...

Sony to finally restore PSN, Qriocity in Japan on Wednesday

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Sony has announced that it will finally restore its PlayStation Network (PSN) and Qriocity digital entertainment and media content services in Japan on Wednesday. The services have been down since April 20 when Sony’s servers suffered a massive security breach that resulted in the theft of the user data of over 77 million users. As with the restoration of service in the North America and around the world, Japanese customers will be able to take advantage of a “Welcome Back” program that includes extended and free trial memberships as well as free games.
The Japanese return to service took longer than in other parts of the world as the Japanese government wanted to be completely satisfied tha...

Intel's Wooing Companies Into Creating Ultra-Thin Ultrabooks

Running on Ivy Bridge, loaded with Thunderbolt ports and costing under $1,000, Intel's Ultrabook laptop segment is expected to be big news in late 2012—if you believe what Intel's saying, anyway. Digitimes claims Intel's attempting to lure 40 per cent of laptop manufacturers into creating Ultrabooks, but until Intel lowers the chip prices, it may not be possible. Asus is planning to launch its Ultrabook UX21 laptop this September however, so I'm sure all eyes will be on the lookout for the first Ultrabook's success.

Bing News UK gets refreshed look

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Bing UK has refreshed its news browse feature to allow people to find the stories that matter to them more easily.
Bing is still battling for market share in the UK, where Google is not so much the 500 pound gorilla as the entire zoo, but the search engine has begun to gain a little purchase.
The refresh of the news page consists of better categorisation and follows the revelation that UKOM's (panel-based) figures suggest Bing News is bigger than Google News.

"Bing UK has a new 'news browse' page that makes it easier than ever to scan headlines and pinpoint news," said Microsoft's statement.

Google slides Prizes into beta, helps you get real paid

Come on down! You can be the next contestant on the Prizes site. That was overkill, we know, but it's a necessary introduction into a new world of online solution-based social gaming pioneered by the Slide team. Acquired by the Goog back in 2010, the low profile entertainment-driven app developer has been hard at work making the web 'more social' and filling its Big Daddy's pockets. Debuting in classic Google beta form, Prizes takes your Twitter or Facebook accounts and signs you up for cash prize-winning, user-created contest shenanigans. In case you missed that fine point, we'll reiterate -- users design the challenges, you post a solution (or vice versa). Like the $40 "Give my Dad a makeo...

PS4 production in late 2011 ahead of 2012 launch tip suppliers

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Game ConsolesSony

Sony may have confirmed that the PS4 next-gen console is in development, but the company isn’t so foolish as to announce any launch details for fear of cannibalizing PS3 sales. That hasn’t stopped the tattle-tales in Taiwan, of course, which inform DigiTimes that Sony is readying production though Foxconn and Pegatron at the end of 2011.
That’s ahead of a commercial launch of the PS4 sometime in 2012, the component supply chain sources suggest. Sony supposedly expects to ship at least 20m PS4 units in 2012, though the exact release date during that year is unknown. Foxconn and Pegatron are both responsible for assembly of the current PS3.

Upcoming MacBook Airs to use 400Mbps flash storage?

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Japanese blog Macotakara.jp is reporting from parts makers in Asia that Apple’s upcoming MacBook Air refresh, expected in the next two weeks, will use super-speedy 400Mbps NAND flash storage chips. In addition to being incredibly fast — even faster that the current MacBook Air solution, which uses an mSATA connector to connect the SSD to the motherboard — these new NAND flash storage chips would be soldered directly to the motherboard, bypassing any connector. If true, this new change would result in 100-times performance increase over the current solution, and coupled with a rumored bump to i5 / i7 processors, the new MacBook Airs should absolutely fly.

Smaller version of the Motorola DROID Pro, the XT316, repeats FCC visit with AT&T bands on board

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Back last April, the Motorola XT316 visited the FCC wearing a radio with Chinese 3G bands on board. The handset is said to be a smaller version of the Motorola DROID Pro and the Motorola XPRT currently available at Verizon and Sprint respectively. With its portrait facing QWERTY on the front of the handset right under the screen, the Motorola XT316 has a decidedly BlackBerry-esque look to it.
The Motorola XT316 has just completed a second visit to the Feds, and this time the radio under the hood was loaded up with AT&T's frequencies which gives us a good idea where this phone is headed to. While a visit to the FCC doesn't guarantee an imminent launch for a device, should the Motorola XT316 g...

Apple becomes latest "Anonymous" hacker target

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Notorious hacker collective “Anonymous Operations” on Sunday published data it claims to have obtained by breaching a server belonging to Apple. The data, which consisted of 27 usernames and passwords, was allegedly taken during from surveys stored on an Apple server. Though the group said on one of its Twitter accounts that it is “busy elsewhere,” and therefore will seemingly not be targeting Apple again in the near future, it claims to have exploited a security flaw common to several companies when it gained access to Apple’s server. Anonymous said the breach was part of its AntiSec movement, short for anti-security, which is aimed at “exposing corporate and government data and humiliating...

HTC continued on its warpath toward becoming the No. 4 smartphone vendor in the world last month as the company recorded record revenue of NT$45 billion ($1.55 billion USD) in June. This marks the third straight month that the Taiwan-based mobile giant saw revenue hit a new high, and it was up 10.9% over May. HTC’s second-quarter revenue totalled NT$124.3 billion ($4.2 billion USD), topping the company’s earlier projection of NT$120 billion, and growing 19.43% over the first quarter of 2011. Sony Ericsson Xperia ray listed online for pre-order with August 15 shipping date

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

The Sony Ericsson Xperia ray was among the trio of smartphones that the manufacturer announced a few weeks ago, and thanks to its slim profile and attractive design, the handset probably managed to grab the attention of the ones who prioritize style over substance when it comes to their gadgets. Little was said, however, regarding the smartphone's availability, and all that we knew after the announcement was that the Xperia ray would hit the market at some point within the third quarter of 2011.
Fortunately, the British online retailer Play.com can shed some light on the matter as it already has the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray, unlocked and contract-free, up for pre-order. The smartphone has an...
