Droid Bionic seemingly clears the FCC, may finally be headed for (US) glory

Droid Bionic seemingly clears the FCC, may finally be headed for (US) glory

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Is this the Droid Bionic, eager to make its US debut at long last? After a false start, it's looking more and more like Motorola's next superphone could be inching ever closer to that elusive "summer release," with a new FCC filing showcasing a cellular communications device with EVDO, LTE, 700MHz radios, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n WiFi and an inductive charging battery cover. 'Course, a few things are still under wraps until August 7th, so it's fairly impossible to tell with any level of certainty what handset we're peering at. The clues most certainly add up, however, and if you were thinking of holding out just a wee bit longer, maybe the outline above is just what you needed to find patience...

Samsung Galaxy S II sells like hotcakes; 3 million sold in 55 days

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

It is one thing for everyone to proclaim that the Samsung Galaxy S II is the hottest smartphone around the globe. It is another to actually have the stats that back it up. According to Samsung, 3 million units of the Galaxy S II have been sold in just 55 days making it the fastest selling phone in Samsung's illustrious history. That beat out the 85 days that it took the original version of the handset to ring up 3 million in sales. At the current rate, a new Samsung Galaxy S II finds an owner every 1.5 seconds. In the U.K., Samsung has been the top selling handset manufacturer for 17 straight weeks.
As amazing as that sounds, we have to take into consideration that the device is not yet avai...

Samsung to combine display, semiconductor businesses

Samsung to combine display, semiconductor businesses

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Samsung

Samsung will combine both its flat-panel display and semiconductor businesses into one unit, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. Samsung’s display business wasn’t profitable during the first quarter and it’s on track for the same lackluster performance during the second quarter. Combined, however, the display and semiconductor businesses made up 70% of Samsung’s operating profits and 44% of the South Korean company’s revenue, The Wall Street Journal said. In other words, the move looks like an attempt to shroud the poor display performance inside the company’s more successful semiconductor unit. The display unit could see more trouble ahead as well, since Samsung is currently locked ...

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Carphone Warehouse has unveiled a Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray UK release date, with the handset expected to arrive in August.
The company launched the handset in Singapore just a couple of weeks ago, bringing an 8MP camera and 1GHz processor to its slim and stylish ways.
It also offers Android 2.3 and a 3.3-inch touchscreen and an array of exciting colours to choose from – black, gold, white and pink, but sadly no blue (Blu-ray, geddit?).
A Ray of light
Sony Ericsson had already noted that the Xperia Ray would land in Q3, so Carphone's release date of August is no huge surprise – but it is just an anticipated date, so subject to change if circumstances dictate it.

Google Nexus S 4G joins Skype video chat party

Google Nexus S 4G joins Skype video chat party

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

While the Google Nexus S was one of the four lucky phones to get the new video calling feature in Skype for Android, the Nexus S 4G variant for Sprint had no such luck. Well, today is another day, and it looks like Skype has added video calling support for the WiMAX version of the Nexus S. Version 2.0.0.47 is available now, and it adds support for the Nexus S 4G on Sprint and the Nexus S in Europe, which was also lacking video calling. Skype did not provide a reason why these phones didn't have the feature from the get-go.

As they continue to tighten their belt in this never-ending unpredictable market, Nokia is planning to close down its high-end Vertu handset business over in Japan – mainly due to some struggles it has been seeing of late over in the land of the rising sun.
Already, Nokia stopped selling their S40 and Symbian devices altogether over there, but they decided to keep around their Vertu business intact – well, all up until now. In fact, the Nikkei reports that the Finnish company will close down Vertu handset stores within Tokyo’s Shibuya and Ginza districts by the end of July. HTC is set to slide into the No. 4 spot on the list of the world’s top smartphone vendors next year according to Taiwan-based research firm Market Intelligence Center. The slot is currently held by BlackBerry maker Research In Motion. Headquartered outside Taiwan’s capital, HTC has quietly built a smartphone empire as well as one of the highest market caps of any tech company on the Taiwan exchange. "Anonymous" launches WikiLeaks for hackers: HackerLeaks

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

The infamous group of “hacktivists” known as Anonymous Operations on Thursday launched a new tool to aid its digital crusade against targeted governments and corporations. Dubbed “HackerLeaks,” the new site is a tool hackers can use to distribute data anonymously, and it adopts the model popularized by WikiLeaks. Hacker groups like the now-defunct LulzSec used a variety of tools to disseminate the spoils of their cyberattacks, but Anonymous explains that their tool has a number of benefits. “Anonymous and the [People’s Liberation Front] have already established connections to the media outlets that can help better expose important data, and that they hope to also provide ‘unique and enlighte...

EVO 3D at the FCC redux: now with AWS 3G

EVO 3D at the FCC redux: now with AWS 3G

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Well, what have we here? Another HTC EVO 3D, aka the PG86300, has landed on the FCC's doorstep -- only this time it's packing radios similar to those seen in the phone's European edition. This one works on the 1700MHz AWS band, so it appears could be destined for duty in the pockets of T-Mobile's magenta-clad masses, though we can't say for sure. However, now that the government's decreed this EVO's electronics won't fry our brains, it shouldn't be be long before we find out.
Update: This FCC filing is most likely for the European EVO 3G, which, like the European Sensation and Flyer, features a tri-band 3G (HSPA+) radio with 2100 / 1700 (AWS) and 900MHz as well as a quadband 2G radio. This m...
