Microsoft hit with lawsuit over Windows Phone 'Really' ads
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
A company called Cellrderm has taken Microsoft to court over its Windows Phone “Really” advertisements, according to Adweek. Cellrderm, a gag company that creates commercials for a fake Cellrderm “cell abuse aid” product, argues that it owns the copyrights to the creative content used in Microsoft’s ads and that Microsoft copied its work in its “Bedroom” and “Bathroom” commercials. You’ve probably seen the ads on TV: in one, a man is too busy on his phone to pay attention to his wife in the bedroom. In another, an executive drops his phone in the urinal and reaches to pick it up. “The Microsoft commercials copy both the sequence of events and the character interplay found in the Cellrderm co...

Google soars $66 higher after hours thanks to earnings report
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Strong Android activations and higher ad rates helped Google report better than expected earnings for the second quarter. The company made $2.5 billion in the three month period compared with $1.84 billion earned in the same period last year, a 36% increase. That works out to profits of $7.68 per share vs. $5.71 a year ago. Google said that if not for costs covering employee stock, the figure would have been $8.74 per share which beat the average analyst estimate of $7.84 a share. Revenue set a record of $9 billion for the quarter. Thanks to the report, Google's stock soared over 12% higher for a gain of $66 to trade at $595.69 in after hours trading.

Foxconn to build Amazon's 10.1-inch tablet
Like UnlikeFiled in: AmazonFoxconn
Foxconn will build Amazon’s rumored 10.1-inch tablet, DigiTimes reported on Thursday. The Android tablet is expected to ship in 2012 according to the report, but Amazon may want to get the device out the door a bit earlier in order to to have it on store shelves in time for the holiday season. A smaller 7-inch version that was built by Quanta computer is already on its way to Amazon and, while other reports suggested it is a 9-inch tablet, that is likely the model we have heard will launch in late August or September. We broke the news that Amazon will launch a “Coyote” tablet that packs a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra processor, as well as a larger “Hollywood” tablet powered by the new quad-core K...

Qualcomm launches Vellamo browser benchmark for Android devices
Like UnlikeQualcomm's not exactly a novice when it comes to sizing up phones -- it's already responsible for the graphics benchmark Neocore. Now, it also wants to show you just how much your mobile browser is lagging. The company just introduced Vellamo, a suite of 11 tests designed to gauge browser performance on Android phones and tablets. In case you're curious, it takes its name from the Finnish goddess of the sea who lures away sailors web surfers (Qualcomm's joke, not ours). And yes, it'll work with any device running Android 2.0 or above, even if it doesn't pack a Qualcomm-made processor. These tests span four broad categories -- rendering, JavaScript, user experience, and networking -- with onl...

Verizon and AT&T LTE likely to be incompatible
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon WirelessAT&T
Bad news for anyone hoping that the expansion of LTE in America would mean we would finally have more freedom to switch carriers. A new report is saying that it is likely that devices for the Verizon LTE network will be incompatible with the AT&T LTE network because the frequency bands for each network will be different.
Most GSM networks run on the same frequencies, meaning you can simply swap your SIM card in an unlocked device while traveling and be able to have service wherever you go. There are some differences, like the frequency difference between T-Mobile and AT&T, which means devices for either network will be able to use the other's EDGE network, but not the faster 3G network. Sim...

Cincinnati Bell rolls out HSPA+ service, speeds past other 4G competition
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Regional carriers don't often get to brag about their accomplishments. It's even rarer that their services best a handful of wireless industry titans, but Cincinnati Bell's managed to do both with its recent rollout of 4G service. Available to subscribers in the Greater Cincinnati area, the operator's HSPA+ offers download speeds up to 10Mbps -- that's twice as fast as T-Mobile's similar network, as well as 4G from Sprint and AT&T. If you've got an AWS-capable HSPA+ smartphone lying around -- like the HTC Sensation -- now would be the time to unlock it. And don't worry about having a limited service area, the carrier's inked deals with national wireless operators to ensure you cruise the 4G ...

RIM said to be prepping Apple TV competitor for fall launch
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersRIM BlackBerry
Research In Motion is currently working on a media box codenamed “BlackBerry Cyclone” that will launch later this fall, BlackBerry news site NerdBerry.net reports. The rumored media hub is said to be similar to Apple’s iOS-based Apple TV box, which connects to a television and plays streaming video content from iTunes. The BlackBerry Cyclone’s purported capabilities include Netflix streaming, YouTube streaming and streaming from media devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The unit will also reportedly feature an HDMI-out port. The move would be a peculiar one from RIM, as it does not have an iTunes competitor to speak of and even with the extremely popular multimedia market, the Apple...

Sony expected to intro new eReaders next month
Like UnlikeFiled in: Ebook ReadersSony
Sony is expected to introduce a new family of eReader devices to challenge the Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook devices next month. In an interview with Bloomberg, Sony Electronics’ vice president of digital reading Phil Lubell said that the new eReaders will offer both software and hardware enhancements, although he wasn’t specific on what exactly the changes are. Lubell said the devices will hit the market ahead of his company’s S1 and S2 Android tablets. AT&T announced yesterday that it would ship the dual-screen S2 to its customers in time for the back-to-school season, and Sony said its tablets will receive a software update later this year with support for the company’s eReader bo...

International Atrix unlocked bootloader uncovered, hackers around the globe rejoice
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaATRIX 4G
That Atrix unlocked bootloader that leaked last month had one nagging limitation -- it was only for the AT&T version of Motorola's dual-core device. Now, thanks to the tireless folks who haunt the XDA forums, all of our international friends rockin' the laptop-dockable handset will soon be free of Moto's chains. Project Cheesecake, as the quest was known, has dug up files from a forthcoming Orange UK firmware upgrade that can be applied to any Atrix across the globe. That means even our impatient neighbors to the north on Bell will be able to get in on the unlocking action early. If you can't wait for Motorola to officially get the update out the door, just keep an eye out at the source and ...

Android Market supports multiple accounts in new version
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
One of the things that has been a limitation and annoyance to Android users is that the Android Market will only use the primary Google account associated with the phone, even though many other Google apps allow you to switch between accounts. Hidden in the latest update to the Market that was announced by Google is the ability to change the account that is used by the Android Market.
Previously, if you wanted to use a different Google account with the Android Market than the one you initially set the phone up with, you had to hard reset the device and start from scratch. With the new option, all it takes is two clicks to switch between accounts, a godsend for people who might have purchased...

Four years of disruption: cell phone industry financials 2007-2011
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Making money in the mobile industry is not an easy task. It is currently at the forefront of the consumer electronics lust, and the breakneck pace of innovation in the last few years has caught some of the incumbents totally unprepared. Profit margins used to be relatively thin, compared to the old guard of oil, financial or military-industrial complex companies, save for a few value added propositions like RIM or HTC, while Nokia was synonymous with cell phones for many people around the world.
Who knew four years ago that Apple's rounded thingy that looked like a soap box with a touchscreen and only one button will disrupt the industry like few inventions before and none so fast. Now Nokia...

T-Mobile now offering caller ID; it'll cost you $4 per month
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-Mobile
For those of us old enough to remember the days before mobile phones, the era of landline domination had a couple of advantages compared to the incredible computers we carry around in our pockets today. First and foremost is voice quality, you simply can’t get the same type of fidelity on a mobile phonethan you can on a regular landline, but with “HD Voice” that’s no longer the case. Sadly, it isn’t yet widely rolled out, and in the countries where it does exist, the UK comes to mind, there’s no inter-operator HD Voice support, meaning if you’re on Three and call someone using Orange, despite the fact that both of you are on HD Voice enabled devices and on HD Voice enabled networks, you’re s...

Microsoft is aiming for 100 million Windows Phones per year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Microsoft’s chief operating officer Kevin Turner told WPC 11 attendees that Microsoft hoped to ship 100 million Windows Phone units each year on the back of its deal with Nokia.
"We have to do some very strategic things to get our mobile phone volume up," Turner said.
Turner said Microsoft’s plan was to win by making “big bets” including Windows Phone 7.
Possibly to help this goal Microsoft intended to build 75 more stores around USA to push their products, probably a good idea given the negative spin phone retailers currently give to Windows Phone 7 handsets, despite high customer satisfaction rates.

Boost Mobile officially getting the BlackBerry Style 9670 on July 20
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryStyle 9670
Okay, it may not be that surprising of a fact since rumors about it surfaced on the web last week, but the BlackBerry Style 9670 is now officially bound to join Boost Mobile's lineup of contract-free smartphones. Starting July 20, the Style 9670 will be available for purchase at a price of $200, and a fitting BlackBerry Monthly Unlimited plan will set you back another $60 per month.
The Style 9670 is not your traditional BlackBerry smartphone, at least not when it comes to its form factor, as it boasts a clamshell design reminiscent to that of the BlackBerry Pearl Flip. However, what you will find as soon as you flip open the Style 9670 is a full QWERTY keyboard just like the ones that RIM's...
