How One Site Beat Google's Anti-Spam Update the Right Way

When Google updated its search algorithm a few months back, many so-called content farms saw their search ranking take a big hit. One site that feels it was unfairly targeted is now claiming that by making a few changes (some of them very minor) they were able to claw back significant search traffic. In fact, HubPages says it has gotten back to its pre-update traffic levels.
The site was negatively affected due to the presence of the typical low-cost SEO content Google was going after. But HubPages also produced a fair amount of high-quality articles. CEO Paul Edmondson searched for ways to counteract the search update, but tactics like tightening editorial standards were mostly ineffective....

Intel Confirms Firmware Bug in 320-Series SSDs

Intel Confirms Firmware Bug in 320-Series SSDs

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Intel has now confirmed that it is aware of the firmware issue that affects their 320-series solid state drives and promised to release an update regarding this problem once more information is available.
A couple of weeks ago some 320-series SSD end users reported that power failures caused their drives to drop in capacity to just 8MB and lose all the data that was stored on them. These problems appear to be triggered by the fact that, after a power loss, the SSD tries to reconnect with the SATA port instead of starting a proper shutdown.
After a fair number of customers complained about this issue on Intel's official support forums, a company employee, that works for the Non-Volatile Memor...

Many people want to be the first to use a shiny new piece of software, which could explain why one person tried to sell an early build of Windows 8.
An auction appeared on eBay offering a “real Windows 8 Milestone 3 leaked CD.” It's unknown if this disc was an official Microsoft pressing, but copies of Windows 8 Milestone 3 have been available off file sharing sites for some time now.
The auction has likely since caught the attention of Microsoft, which probably explains why the listing was pulled. According to WinRumors, the auction listing had a price of $1,500.
For those who really want to try out Windows 8, but to abide by Microsoft's rules, there's been rumors that Microsoft will releas...

IBM never talks about the cost of its high-end mainframes, but when it comes to its low-end mainframe, price is a major focal point.
IBM is today announcing the latest successor to what it has called its "business-class" system, the zEnterprise 114, with a starting price of $75,000 -- 25 percent lower than the previous system in this category.
[ Keep up on the day's tech news headlines with InfoWorld's Today's Headlines: Wrap Up newsletter. ]
That earlier system, the z10 Business Class, was released in 2008. This new mainframe has 25 percent more performance than the earlier system, said IBM, but also includes some of the same capabilities of its top end mainframe, the zEnterprise 196, which...

ASRock Giving PCI-Express 3.0 A Big Push

ASRock Giving PCI-Express 3.0 A Big Push

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: ASRock

ASRock today is one of the top-three motherboard vendors in terms of sales volumes, but it must have been a long and tiring journey getting there in the market. One of the design philosophies of ASRock motherboards has been to experiment with unique features, odd chipset-socket combinations, odd and exotic expansion slot selection, and so on. Today, ASRock may not be the only motherboard vendor with products featuring PCI-Express 3.0, but it looks like the company is of the idea to make the new interconnect a major selling point, of the kind USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gb/s became a couple of years ago. The company is planning an entire series of socket LGA1155 motherboards targeting mid-thru-high en...

Mark Zuckerberg Doesn't Want You to See Who's Following Him on Google+

Mark Zuckerberg Doesn't Want You to See Who's Following Him on Google+

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

The most popular people on Google+ just got a little more mysterious. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have all activated privacy settings on their Google+ profiles so the number of followers they have can't be tracked.
Before today, it was clearly visible to all that Zuckerberg was the most-followed person on the new social network, followed pretty closely by Brin and Page. But as of today those profiles don't display any information about their "Circles"—what Google+ calls friend groups—or how many people are following them.
The change amounts to a slight privacy tweak that any user can do. Clicking on Settings and selecting the Privacy tab lets y...

Sony eyes electric car future, wants to soon sell you Li-ion batteries

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Sony

Sony must be smelling dolla dolla bills in the EV-charged streets because the company just announced its intentions to fab lithium-ion batteries for the cars mid-decade. The statement, made from its plant in Motomiya, hinges on a future market flush with consumer demand for the earth-friendly autos, and could see the construction of several dedicated factories. Given the Japanese company's recent history eating bits of competitor dust (hello Wii and iPod), we understand its forward-facing desire to become king of this Li-ion hill. But the mega-electronics maker isn't placing all of its batteries in one fuel-source just yet -- it's "also [considering] developing batteries for gasoline-electri...

Netflix streaming comes to the Nintendo 3DS tomorrow

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Ever since Nintendo's GDC announcement in March we've been waiting for Netflix streaming on the 3DS, and it appears tomorrow's eShop update will do the trick. This may be too late for those that followed through on threats to cancel after the new rates were announced yesterday, but all other 3DS owners can get their Parks & Rec (in 3D?) anywhere in range of a WiFi signal. Joystiq also points out there's also two Game Boy games coming in tomorrow's update, Game & Watch Gallery and Baseball, just in case you're interested in using your portable game machine to actually play games.

ICANN Destroys Main Street Dot Com

ICANN Destroys Main Street Dot Com

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Can you guess what the most common street name is in the U.S.A.? It’s not main street. It’s Second street. When you think about it, that makes sense. Some towns have a main street, and then the next street over is Second. Some towns have a First street. Some towns have Division street. Park street is the second most popular street name, but Second Street is the most popular. But it is only the most popular because every town also has a main thoroughfare, and the other streets branch off from there. Even though the most popular street in America is Second, that would not be true if there was not some central location toward which all of the other streets pointed.

Ubisoft has announced the acquisition of free-to-play game developer Owlient. Details of the deal were not disclosed, so it's not clear how much Ubisoft paid for the small company, which employs some 40 employees.
Owlient has created multiple successful online properties. The most popular one is Howrse, a game that lets you breed horses or ponies and manage an equestrian center. Owlient currently has 2 million active users, but Ubisoft says it was interested in the team's extensive expertise in the management of online game-playing communities.
Olient (the "Ow" in the name was added later) was started on September 8, 2005 in Paris, France. The name came from the two founders names: Olivier I...
