BlackBerry Torch 2 slides through the FCC, bound for AT&T?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryTorch 9810
We've already gotten our grubby little mitts on it, and it looks like soon enough you too will be able to wrap your QWERTY-loving digits around a Torch 2. It looks like the display-centric BlackBerry just slid its way through the FCC, sporting 850MHz and 1900MHz GSM bands, indicating this particular model (listed as RDM71UW) is destined for AT&T. Obviously, even if this is in fact the Torch 2, an FCC filing is not exactly a confirmed release date -- so don't start lining up outside your local AT&T outlet just yet.

Apple also released a comparable update for Verizon Wireless’ CDMA iPhone 4, iOS 4.2.9. The new build includes a security update that addresses a vulnerability with PDF files. It also patches the extremely popular jailbreak.me jailbreak solution, so it will no longer function on devices that update. IOS 4.3.4 is available immediately via iTunes.

Big news for Big Red-eyed fans -- the Droid 3's finally made its dual-core, qHD, global 3G surfin' ways official at the carrier's retail outlets. You can pick this QWERTY slider up now for $199 on a two-year contract, or just go whole-hog and pay $459 with no strings attached. It's not the operator's top of the line offering, nor is it the increasingly mythical Bionic, but it should satisfy your Android needs. Click the source to order the latest in the Droid's lineage.

Judge finds HTC guilty of infringing two Apple patents; could mean trouble for Android [updated]
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleHTC
A judge with the U.S. International Trade Commission on Friday ruled that HTC’s Android phones infringe on two of ten Apple patents covered in a complaint filed by the Cupertino-based company last year. “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement at that time. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.” The ITC’s decision is an initial determination however, and it will now need to be reviewed by a six-member Commission. Apple’s complaint in this case covered a total of ten patents, and t...

OTA update for ASUS Eee Pad Transformer doesn't leave Android 3.2 with it
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsASUSEee Pad Transformer TF101
Yesterday, we reported that a tweet from ASUS said that Android 3.2 is being tested on the popular tablet and that the update should be out shortly. Unfortunately, it made the owners of the tablet excited when they received an OTA upgrade on Friday. No, the update that is on the device now is not going to give you Android 3.2.
According to those who have downloaded and installed the update, the changes appear to be a new build of Wi-Fi which is now 1.50 from the previous 1.42. The Kernel number has been changed as has the build numberto 8.4.4.11-20110711 from 8.4.4.5-20110527. According to others who have installed the update, there is a new boot logo that has a "Powered by Nvidia" logo on ...

Another software update due for the HTC ThunderBolt soon?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCThunderBolt
Even though the HTC ThunderBolt received its second software update last week (version 1.70.605.0), we've got word from one of our tipsters that another update may only be a couple weeks away.
The customer had contacted Verizon support via e-mail this week due to some issues with their ThunderBolt and was told about a new update that is due out soon. Some of the fixes are to include an issue with SMS/MMS messages going to the wrong contact, Gmail, and to resolve the pesky 4G data connection issue.

DRAM prices drop even further
Like UnlikeIt's crazy how cheap DDR3 memort is at the moment, but prices are falling even further.
Early July contract prices for 2GB and 4GB DDR3 memory modules declined another 7% following about 6% decreases in late June, according to data collected by DRAMeXchange. Prices have come near the low levels reached during the previous industry downturn, the price tracker observed.
As chip producers are under growing pressure to clear out their inventories, PC OEMs have gained more bargaining power when negotiating prices, DRAMeXchange pointed out.
In addition, DRAM inventory at PC OEMs had piled up earlier in the second quarter, which thus discouraged them to place orders starting June, DRAMeXchange ind...

Google Q2 Financials Set New Revenue Record
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google had a bit of an off first quarter this year. It’s not like they lost billions of dollars, but the financial markets were a little unhappy with the numbers. The just announced Q2 results should make everyone forget all about that though. Google reports an astounding $9.03 billion in quarterly revenue. That’s a record for Google.
When compared to last year, Google’s revenue numbers were up 32%. Most of this increase was derived from the huge Google.com numbers. Google-owned sites generated $6.23 billion of the total revenue. While paid click numbers were up 18% year-over-year, they were down 2% from last quarter. Net cash flow amounted to $3.52 billion.
We have also learned that Google...

Sony Refers to PlayStation Network Downtime as a "Great Experience"
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sony
Devouring a well prepared meal at a fancy restaurant can be a great experience. So can skydiving, overclocking, sitting in the front row of a sporting event, visiting the Grand Canyon, and the list goes on, perhaps endlessly. But would you classify being repeatedly hacked to the point where you have to shut down your gaming network a "great experience?" Sony's president of network entertainment Tim Schaaff did.
"Great experience, really good time," Shaaff told VentureBeat in a sit-down interview. "Though I wouldn't like to do it again."
The high-profile attack on Sony's PlayStation Network was just one in what turned out to be a string of security breaches perpetuated by LulzSec and Anonymou...

Google Activates 550,000 Android Devices Daily, Reaches 250,000 Android Market Apps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Today was a big day for Google as they excited shareholders with an awesome earnings call, boasting just over $9 billion in revenue this past quarter. They also revealed some fascinating numbers on the speed of adoption for their new Google+ social platform that already has 10 million users after opening its doors for just two weeks. And still there’s more auspicious figures for the company’s Android platform.
During the earnings call, Google CEO Larry Page mentioned that they are now activating about 550,000 Android devices each day. Just a little over two weeks ago, Google Senior VP and “father of Android,” Andy Rubin, tweeted that Android activations had reached 500,000. Back at Google I/...

Spotify goes live in the U.S., free service is invite-only for now
Like UnlikeSpotify has officially gone live in the U.S. this morning after many months of rumors and speculation. The popular music streaming service has been available in several European countries for years, but the lack of licensing agreements with major record labels in the U.S. had kept it from hitting the other side of the Atlantic until now.
The offer is the same as in Europe, for the most part: $5 per month gets you unlimited, on-demand access to over 15 million songs, while the $10 monthly plan adds offline storage of tracks and lets you use the Spotify client on your mobile device (the Spotify iPhone app is now available in the U.S. App Store). You can opt out of either plan at any time.

Jawbone branches out from audio products, teases "Up" wristband that keeps tabs on your bad habits
Like UnlikeFiled in: Jawbone
According to our calendar, this is one of the least timely days of the year for us to harp on New Year's Resolutions, but that's no matter to Jawbone. The company, best-known for crafting those high-end headsets, is at TED talking up its first non-audio product: a wristband dubbed "Up" that tracks and analyzes your eating, sleeping, and exercise habits -- kind of like a bare-bones Fitbit or Nike+. As you can see in that photo up there, it's about the size of those ubiquitous rubber Livestrong bands and lacks a display (not to mention, wireless radios) -- all concessions made in the name of keeping the cost down, says Travis Bogard, VP of product marketing and strategy. So, this is a good 'ol...

Netflix for Nintendo 3DS now up and running
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
As promised, Nintendo on Thursday morning posted Netflix for 3DS owners. The app (not pictured here) gives the dual-screen game system access to the whole catalog as long as they have a streaming-enabled plan. Bookmarking still works and lets users resume on the 3DS or another device.
Videos on Netflix are currently in 2D. It's not clear if or when Netflix will start adding 3D.
The app itself is free to download from the Nintendo eShop. Streaming under the newly instituted rates stays at $8 for those who only need streaming but costs $16 for those who also want unlimited DVDs.
