The fine folks at Toshiba have announced their intent to create some fantastic 15.6-inch lenticular lens-based panels for notebooks while tablets also sit very much in the mix (though perhaps in the hands of the competitors, according to industry sources.) These panels will be developed by Taiwan-based AU Optronics (AUO) for some brand new naked-eye 2D/3D switchable notebook models that’ll be launched in August for right around $2,100USD. Why, 3D notebooks, that’s crazy talk!

The News Corp. phone-hacking scandal has already resulted in the closure of its News of the World tabloid, but it has now ruined the company's proposed takeover of BSkyB and prompted concern from Congress.
Sen. John Rockefeller, chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, on Tuesday said in a statement that the company's alleged phone hacks are "offensive and a serious breach of journalistic ethics."
"This raises serious questions about whether the company has broken U.S. law, and I encourage the appropriate agencies to investigate to ensure that Americans have not had their privacy violated," Rockefeller continued.
Given that the journalists' reportedly hacked into the voicemails of family m...

Sony 3D Experience brings free on-demand movie trailers, sports clips to Bravia TVs

HDTV manufacturers have used a variety of tactics to attract customers to the 3D segment, bundling free glasses, discounting Blu-ray players, and nearly eliminating unsightly bezels, but with content selection still incredibly limited, there's been little incentive for consumers to shell out extra cash for a 3D set. Sony's new 3D Experience sets out to expand those content offerings, streaming on-demand sports highlights and select movie trailers to Bravia LCD TVs, and eventually Blu-ray players and home theater systems. The Experience launches with just 30 clips in the US, Canada, France, Germany, and the UK today, but will eventually grow to include more movie, music, sports, and documenta...

NTT demonstrates next-gen 802.11ac wireless system

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

The Wi-Fi Alliance has been working to push wireless speeds into gigabit territory for a couple of years now, and it appears that Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo is on board to make this a reality. During the Wireless Technology Park event in Yokohama City, NTT demonstrated a prototype 802.11ac Wi-Fi implementation, and though there's still work to be done towards faster speeds in multi-user scenarios the company is working to have it ready by 2013.
Currently, higher speeds are being achieved with a single receiver, whereas in the three-user setup demonstrated by NTT the speed was dropped to 120Mbps per user at the same time. The wireless transmission was realized by using a space divisi...

The IdeaPad K1's long, crazy journey of near-availability looks to finally be at an end. Lenovo's ethereal Honeycomb tablet has been popping up in online retail sites since May, teasing us with availability in June, and finally offering the promise of pre-order earlier this month. It seems that the plucky 10.1 inch Tegra 2 slate has taken the final step separating itself from the hands of consumers: getting sent out for shipment. One tipster passed along shipping confirmation from Office Depot that has the device lined up for delivery today -- assuming, of course that the recipient is there to answer the door in the eight and a half hour delivery window provided.

Apple TV to score Bluetooth support with iOS 5, make search slightly less painful?

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Did you know that your second-gen Apple TV has a Bluetooth radio hidden inside it? Well it does but, until now, the only way to access it was with a little jailbreaking and some command line chops. That could all be changing though, with the release of iOS 5 this fall. 9to5Mac pulled some interesting code from the latest developer beta of iOS indicating that support for Bluetooth keyboards is coming to the Apple TV and, potentially, the ability pair other devices as well. In addition to making search without the iPhone remote app far less painful, a keyboard is an essential part of bringing apps to the tiny media box -- something that has been rumored would happen for quite sometime. It's po...

Google+ to get an address book uploader soon

I am not that big of a social network user. I have Google+ account as all of us here at SlashGear do but so far other than adding a very short profile I haven’t embraced what Google is offering. I know a lot of people have and for many the big challenge is getting all of your contacts into Google+ from other social networks like Facebook. It would seem with Facebook moving to block the export of friends from its site the dominant social network is a little nervous about competition.
Google knows your pain in trying to get a large number of contacts into Google+ from other applications and it is working to make that importing easier. Google’s Rohit Khare has announced that Google is working o...

Google Won't Let Ex-Employee Release Book Called Social Circles

What follows is the awkward tale of Paul Adams's (ex-UX Researcher guy at Google-turned-Facebook advertising product manager) Social Circles research book, which he wrote while working for Google. Research which contributed directly to Google+, particularly its friends groups.
Having joined Facebook in January some seven months before the launch of Google+, you can imagine he was both anticipating and dreading the launch of his pet project. Now describing the launch being like "bumping into an ex-girlfriend," Adams' obviously keen to finally launch his book—only trouble is, Google isn't. Supposedly the big G gave Adams the thumb's up in June last year, telling him to publish Social Circles—t...

Amazon and Best Buy drop pricing on HP TouchPad

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Amazon and Best Buy have both dropped their pricing on the 16GB and 32GB models of HP’s new TouchPad tablet. Amazon customers can now pick up a 16GB model for $489.99 or a 32GB model for $572.65, down from $499.99 and $599.99, respectively. Similarly, Best Buy is now offering the 32GB model for $579.99. We’re not surprised by the price drops. In our recent review of the TouchPad, we said it’s “just good” in its current state and that the original pricing was OK if you had the patience for the tablet. At least now you’ll be able to save a few bucks for the nifty Touchstone charging dock.

Twitter for Android gets push notifications and multiple accounts

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Twitter for Android has a new update which brings some sorely needed new features: multiple account support and push notifications. Now, you can easily switch between multiple accounts in case you're a power user. But, the big news for more casual users is push notifications.
One of the biggest drains on an Android battery are apps that constantly poll for data in the background, and Twitter apps are one of the biggest culprits. One way to try to fix this is to lower the polling intervals, but by doing that you might miss @replies or direct messages. With push notifications, you no longer have to worry. Users can choose whether you want notifications of new tweets, replies and/or direct mes...

PayPal announces phone-to-phone NFC support, cuts eyes at Google

Still eager to do business with a company that'll lock your account on a whim and side with the buyer regardless of the facts? Splendid! If that's you, PayPal would love for you to know that it has announced a new phone-to-phone NFC payment application at MobileBeat 2011, offering Nexus S owners the ability to request and transfer funds between handsets. As of now, the functionality is quite limited -- there's just a single smartphone with the hardware capabilities to take advantage, and there's no phone-to-anything not a phone supported as of now. In other words, this isn't exactly a Square killer just yet, but it's definitely something for the sued folks at Google to pay attention to. We'r...
