Microsoft really wants to hang with the cool kids at the mall. Or, at least park its retail derriere next to the likes of Apple's sleek boutiques -- to the tally of 86 stores by 2014. We know most of you are scratching your heads thinking, "Microsoft store? Don't you mean Best Buy?" Aye, but we don't. The MS-branded outfits started cropping up in 2009 and with 11 locations already dotting our map, COO Kevin Turner hopes to plant some more Windows flags in California, Florida, most of the northeast and even some overseas territories. Comments regarding the Ballmer-led company's retail expansion came during the 2011 Worldwide Partner Conference and centered mostly on the benefits of customer f...

Samsung claims proof its chip plants don't cause cancer

Samsung has disclosed that a study it commissioned by a US environmental and health care consultancy found no relationship between exposure to carcinogenic chemicals used in its semiconductor factories and the incidence of cancer in its workers. The findings reflect the results of two previous studies conducted by the Korean government. Despite claiming no link between the two, the company is considering offering financial help to some of its former employees who have been stricken with disease.
Samsung talked to a third party, ENVIRON, to investigate the situation. Because the facilities in question have been converted from actually making chips to testing chips and producing LEDs, the cons...

3DS Only Selling At Half The Rate Of DS

3DS Only Selling At Half The Rate Of DS

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

When you don't have any stellar games for a system, it's not going to do that well in the marketplace. That's the lesson Nintendo is learning with the 3DS.
After weeks of analysts talking about poor sales and an overwhelming lack of interest in the new glasses-free 3D handheld, Nintendo confessed in its own press release that the DS is still outselling the 3DS at a rate of two-to-one, but instead of treating it as a failure for the 3DS, you can probably guess how they spun it.
"The fact is that while the 3DS is a compelling system, its cost and the lack of killer games for it mean that uptake is bound to be on the slow side — compared to the DS, which has a library of megahits stretching bac...

Apple Changes Up Overseas App Store Pricing

Apple Changes Up Overseas App Store Pricing

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

A dollar isn't what it used to be—and even electronics juggernaut Apple knows it. This week the company made some fairly significant changes to its international App Store pricing, CNET reports.
The new scheme will mean cheaper albums in Japan, Switzerland, and Australia, and pricier tracks in the UK, Norway, and Mexico. The price adjustments reflect changes in foreign exchange rates and local tax laws in countries, an Apple spokesperson told CNET. The spokesperson said that the changes only apply to Apple's App Store and Mac App Store—not the company's hardware.
MacRumors charted out the price changes in the six countries (below), and increases include:
Mexico: $10 to $12
Norway: 6.00Kr to ...

Is Google Zapping Our Memory?

Is Google Zapping Our Memory?

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Last year, writers Nicholas Carr and Jamais Cascio made headlines with a debate in the Atlantic Monthly over whether Google made you stupid. While it was eventually determined that no, Google probably is not killing your brain cells, several psychology professors decided to conduct a more scientific experiment on the subject.
In examining peoples' Internet habits and how it affects their memory recall, the researchers found that while the Web is not exactly making you dumb, per se, people are less likely to work hard at remembering certain things if they know they can just look it up on the Internet. Meanwhile, when asked difficult questions, Web users are now more likely to think about how ...

Pentagon admits to losing 24,000 files in major network breach

Pentagon admits to losing 24,000 files in major network breach

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

2011 has certainly been the year of the hacker so far. The number of hacks and attacks that have been perpetrated against the US government and businesses is staggering and shows no sign of letting up. Perhaps the most disturbing of all the hacks this year was one perpetrated against the US government that the Pentagon has now admitted happened in the spring of this year. The Pentagon says that the attack was one of the most damaging to date.
The Pentagon has admitted “foreign intruders” stole 24,000 files and the files were taken from a defense contractor. The specific defense contractor that was hacked wasn’t named and the nature of the files stolen was not disclosed. Deputy Defense Secret...

Apple to ditch Samsung for iPad 3 chip?

Apple to ditch Samsung for iPad 3 chip?

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

With all the legal wrangles going on between Apple and Samsung (you show me yours and I'll show you mine) it's easy to forget that the two tech giants are BFFs when it comes to chip production - Samsung manufactured the A4 chip that sits in your iPhone 4 and the A5 that's housed in your iPad 2.
Or at least they were - a report by Reuters suggests that Apple may be looking elsewhere when it comes to the production of its next-gen SoC, the A6.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry, is said to be in the middle of a trial to see if it has the minerals for large scale A6 production - a task that will kick off before the ...

Dell Latitude XT3 convertible tablet hits FCC

Dell Latitude XT3 convertible tablet hits FCC

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

It’s been a long time since we heard anything about the Dell Latitude XT3 convertible. This is the machine that I mentioned back in February that converts from a notebook to a tablet with a swiveling screen. If you are interested in a convertible tablet, this rig has finally hit the FCC after hiding in the closet for the last several months. Interestingly the tablet didn’t cross the FCC at Dell’s behest.
The machine was part of a filing that Broadcom made apparently for a WLAN card that it provides for the computer. We do know a bit more about the specs of the convertible now than we did back in February. The XT3 will use a dual-core 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-2520 processor and pack in 2GB of RAM...

Verizon LTE: no roaming, even if you want to

Verizon LTE: no roaming, even if you want to

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Several companies are hopping on the LTE bandwagon, but it's turning out to be more isolating an experience than we hoped. According to PCMag, a Verizon spokesperson confirmed that its fourth-generation broadband network won't be compatible with other carriers in the US. As it turns out, Big Red and AT&T each own a separate block of 700MHz spectrum with only a fraction of overlap, leaving little room for phones on both networks to mingle with one another. There's not much hope for roaming on MetroPCS or LightSquared, either, as their waves of LTE run at 1700MHz and 1500MHz, respectively. This smattering of frequencies means it'll be near impossible to get roam on other companies' 4G networks...

Google Games discovered in Google+ code

Google Games discovered in Google+ code

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Some judicious digging through the Google+ code has revealed the Google Games logo, further evidence that the search giant is preparing an online social gaming system to rival Facebook’s. Flagged up by TechCrunch tipster Yvo Schaap, in addition to the logo – relatively uninspiring, but certainly in-keeping with the minimalist aesthetic at Google+ – there are also mentions of various gaming APIs yet to be implemented publicly.
These APIs include “/_/games/getGameFriends”, “/_/games/getActivities” and” /_/games/postToStream” which add up to suggest playing online games and challenges with people in your Google+ circles. The results of those matches can then apparently be pushed to your own new...

New Xbox to be Windows 8 powered?

New Xbox to be Windows 8 powered?

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft's Andy Lees has pointed to a unified ecosystem for all of the companies' devices, including Xbox, PC and phones.
Lees was speaking at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference when he said: "We are aiming to provide coherence and consistency across the PC, the phone, and the TV - particularly with Xbox,"

"That's through providing new types of scenarios - things like the way in which you make the user experience more common, as you saw yesterday in the demontration of the user experience you have on Windows 8, on Windows Phone, and also on Xbox - but also sharing key pieces of technology." he added.
It looks like Lees is suggesting that the future of Xbox could be in Windows 8 fo...

Hotmail forbids 'easy' passwords

Hotmail forbids 'easy' passwords

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

Hotmail has banned new users from using obvious and common passwords like '123456' and 'password'.
The free Microsoft webmail service has also outlawed over-used phrases like 'ilovecats' from being used as the only thing standing between the bad guys and your emails.
According to Ars Technica, Microsoft is also considering extending the ban to existing Hotmail accounts too.
Security conscious
Microsoft is also rolling out a feature that allows Hotmail users to report if another Hotmail user has been hacked.
Dubbed 'My friend's been hacked!' the tool will then block the infected account and 'your friend' will have to go through the account recovery process to get back into it.

Chrome OS gets hacked via ScratchPad extension

Chrome OS gets hacked via ScratchPad extension

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

In a preview of a demonstration at the upcoming Black Hat security conference, a security researcher has demonstrated how browser extensions can be used to compromise Chrome OS. WhiteHat Security specialist Matt Johansen reported spreading a note containing malicious code via the ScratchPad extension.
The Chrome extension ScratchPad has a wide range of permissions that made it vulnerable to a cross-site scripting attack, Matt Johansen, an application security specialist at WhiteHat Security, said July 14 in a preview of a presentation he will be making at Black Hat.
Johansen did his work on the Google CR-48 Beta laptop released last fall, but said malicious extensions would affect any device...

iPhone 5 delayed due to faulty processors?

iPhone 5 delayed due to faulty processors?

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

Rumours of delays have dogged the upcoming iPhone 5 for months now, but the latest chatter from those apparently in the know suggests that the new iPhone may be held back until early 2012.
The reason behind the hold-up, sources say, is that the dual-core A5 processor that Apple is intending to use has been overheating.
Many have speculated that this will see Apple waiting until the A6 chip is available, which won't be until the beginning of next year.
Note the 'if'
If true, this could mean we will see a slightly updated iPhone 4S launch in autumn (another recurring rumour), with a more major upgrade made public after Christmas.
