Apple’s board of directors has been in informal talks with executive recruiting firms and has been discussing a successor to CEO Steve Jobs, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. Reportedly, the board has also met and talked with “at least one” head of a “high-profile tech company” as a possible successor, although it’s unclear who that person is. The Wall Street Journal also noted that it wasn’t immediately clear if Steve Jobs had been aware of the search or if Apple has been looking behind his back, though he emailed The Wall Street Journal in response to their questions about the discussions: “I think it’s hogwash.” Steve Jobs has been on medical leave from the Cupertino-based firm...

Not content with the brevity of the goo.gl domain, Google has gone ahead and purchased the g.co domain to be used as the official URL shortener for Google sites.
The g.co domain will only be used for Google sites, unlike the goo.gl shortener that can be used for anything. Only Google will be able to create g.co shortcuts, and the shortcuts will always point to a Google site. Goo.gl will remain a public shortener that can be used by anyone for any site.
G.co will be offering shortcuts to Google's products and services in the near future.

Android 3.2 Hits Motorola Xoom, SDK Released

Posted on Jul 20, 2011 by MG1

Android 3.2 Honeycomb has just been released and it includes a number of bug fixes and other upgrades to the tablet version of Google’s mobile software platform. Moreover, the release shows better support for multiple screen resolutions, which means manufacturers can just go nuts with their screen sizes, within reason. What we have to look forward to are 7-inch Android tablets, which are arguably more portable than their 10-inch counterparts.

During Google’s Mobile Revolution conference in Tokyo, Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt reaffirmed his company’s support of HTC and its other Android partners, ZDNET Asia reported on Tuesday. HTC is currently in the middle of multiple patent battles with Apple, and the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled on Friday that the Taiwanese firm was in violation of two of Apple’s patents. When asked whether Google would help HTC pay any fees associated with a guilty ruling, should the company’s appeal be shot down, Schmidt replied “We will make sure they don’t lose, then.” Schmidt attributed the lawsuits to Android’s massive global growth and restated that there are now more than 550,0...

Research In Motion (RIM) rushed out the BlackBerry PlayBook earlier this year that received little love for its many platform shortcomings—check out our review. The tablet was based on RIM’s new QNX OS, to which the company is struggling to transition. Although the promised 4G version of the tablet has yet to arrive, there are already reports that RIM may discontinue the Wi-Fi model.
In a note to investors, RBC Capital Markets Managing Director Mike Abramsky reported that the company may discontinue its production of the Wi-Fi BlackBerry PlayBook. This model is the only one the company currently produces, as the 3G/4G version is still in the horizon.

There's a web browser hiding inside the iriver Story HD, but it's pretty shy

Posted on Jul 19, 2011 by MG1

Looking for a way to surf the web on your new iriver Story HD? The Digital Reader's got you covered, with a nifty, albeit not totally satisfying hack. As it turns out, the Story HD's much-ballyhooed Google eBookstore operates as a mobile version, rather than an app, meaning you can use it to access other pages -- if you know the trick. All you have to do is navigate to the first Help page within the eBookstore, where you'll see a list of links running across the top. The Books link leads to books.google.com, from which you can jump to google.com, effectively putting the internet at your fingertips. The major downside, however, is that iriver's hidden browser won't give you an address bar, th...

Xbox 720: every rumour about the next Xbox

Posted on Jul 19, 2011 by MG1

Rumours about the new Xbox (or Xbox 720, as it's often referred to as) are now more than just internet gossip.
It's one thing to wildly speculate about the next Xbox console. It's quite another to find out that Microsoft is gearing up to build one.
Recent job postings reveal that the Xbox Console Architecture team is hunting for new blood. Successful candidates will join a team that will be "responsible for defining and delivering next generation console architectures from conception through implementation."
It screams Xbox 720 (or whatever Microsoft chooses to call its new Xbox). So let's gather together the facts, the half-whispered untruths and the wishful thinking to see what such a mach...

Blocked by Google+, Anonymous Starts Own Social Network

Posted on Jul 19, 2011 by MG1

A hacking group might not the best people to handle your private, social-networking profile details, but don't tell Anonymous. The group, spurned by Google+, has pledged to start its own social network, dubbed AnonPlus.
Over the weekend, Anonymous posted a screen shot on its Tumblr blog of what it said was its suspended Google+ account. "Didn't take long to get banned from Google+ our Gmail is also gone," the group wrote. The image said Anonymous' Google+ account was suspended for violating Google's community standards with its posts.
In response, Anonymous has started AnonPlus, which it described as "a social network where there is no fear of censorship, of blackout, nor of holding back."

Amazon offers up to 80% off digital textbook rentals

Amazon offers up to 80% off digital textbook rentals

Posted on Jul 19, 2011 by MG1

Amazon has gone and done all the college students out there a solid with a new savings program for textbooks. Amazon is offering students 80% off the price of any print textbook as a digital rental on the Kindle. That means you can get your books in digital format, save a ton of loot, and hit the parents up for a new eReader with justification. The only downside I see is that you won’t be able to sell your books for beer money after dropping a class.

Windows Phone 7.5 to arrive as soon as next month?

Windows Phone 7.5 to arrive as soon as next month?

Posted on Jul 19, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft's latest update to its Windows Phone OS, codenamed Mango, may arrive sooner than many were expecting. Fujitsu will offer the very first Mango device, a waterproof phone called the IS12T, on KDDI as early as late next month, according to the Japanese publication Nikkei.
The phone will go for somewhere between 30,000 and 40,000 yen ($380 and $500), which is not that much given it will probably be a higher-end device. Of course, we won't know if that's really a good deal until we see all the Mango phones from Microsoft's various partners, a list which keeps growing.
Last week, Microsoft showed off four unannounced Windows phones from Acer, ZTE, Fujitsu, and Samsung. Nokia, which agree...

Microsoft may have incapacitated the notorious Rustock botnet this year, but the company is still hunting those who were running the show. In March, Redmond paired up with federal law enforcement agents to seize computer equipment from US Internet hosting facilities to cripple the million-machine-strong network. Besides accounting for a sizable portion of the world's spam, Rustock committed other crimes, including advertising counterfeit or unapproved versions of pharmaceuticals, and violating the trademarks of Pfizer and Microsoft.
Only two weeks after being taken offline, global spam rates declined some 33.6% according to a Symantec MessageLabs Intelligence report. There are still hundreds...

Nokia plans to drop prices across its entire product line this September in an attempt to bolster sales, industry insider Eldar Murtazin claimed on Friday. The struggling Finnish cell phone vendor will cut phone prices by 10% according to the Russian blogger, who has an extensive history of accurately reporting inside information pertaining to Nokia and other smartphone vendors. “Nokia are going to cut prices for the whole product line by 10 per cent in September,” Murtazin posted on his Twitter account. “They struggle for a market share worldwide.” Nokia’s share of the global cell phone market has been steadily declining as the company failed to adjust its strategy to the changing marketpla...

HP TouchPad may get webOS 3.0.2 update this week; new apps, performance tweaks en route

Posted on Jul 19, 2011 by MG1

Great news for all HP TouchPad owners out there – the webOS-powered tablet is about to be treated to a software update this week. That is, of course, if the rumors that are circulating on the web turn out to be true.
According to the said rumors, the HP TouchPad will be receiving an OTA update to webOS 3.0.2, and the improvements that it is expected to bring are anything but merely superficial. First of all, users will be able to get movies and music straight to their TouchPads via the HP Movie Store and HP Music Store apps that are about to be added. The Amazon Kindle and Amazon MP3 apps are also said to be arriving to the tablet at some point this month. Besides that, the email app will b...
