BlackBerry Torch 9810 passes through FCC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryTorch 9810
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 recently passed FCC certification, but that’s not the only RIM device coming down the pipe. The Torch 2 9810 has also made its way through the testing rigamarole, which suggests that it’s one of the multiple devices RIM has promised in the next month. The bands tested line up with AT&T’s HSPA network, so that locks in at least one supporting carrier for launch.
Like most of the next-generation BlackBerry smartphones, the Torch 9810 will have a near-field communications chip built in for contactless payments and other neat applications. There will also be a magnetic compass included which will enable augmented reality appls like Wikitude. From what we’ve seen in leaked...

Apple reportedly testing high-res screens for iPad 3
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPad 3
Well, here we go again. Another report out of the Korean Times suggests that Apple is currently testing a high-resolution 9.7-inch display that will bring a Retina Display of sorts to the next iPad.
The report said:
“Apple’s upcoming iPad 3 will feature an improved display to support quad extended graphics (QXGA), a display resolution of 2048×1536 pixels with a 4:3 aspect ratio to provide full high definition (HD) viewing experience,” said a source close to the talks.
I think it’s pretty clear that the next iPad will have a higher-resolution display but the real question is when can we expect the next iPad to hit. If we go by Apple’s patterns over the last few years, the next-generation tabl...

CyanogenMod 7 hits 500,000 installs, eclipses previous milestone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Looks like another round of roman candles are in order. After already setting off the celebratory fireworks for its previous user install milestone, CyanogenMod 7's done it again -- this time reaching past the half a million mark. The highly customizable Android homebrew is arguably the biggest aftermarket OS in the ROM-flashing campus, and it has the numbers to back it up. According to the site's stats, the official release of 7.0.3 saw the biggest spike in handset installations -- at 76,897 -- with unofficial nightly builds almost doubling that figure. Sure, it sometimes seems like the rooting community is a vast, silent majority, but it's actually a wafer-thin slice of Google's mobile pie...

HTC to appeal ITC ruling in Apple patent case
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleHTC
HTC will appeal the U.S. International Trade Commission’s ruling that it is infringing on two of Apple’s patents. “Now the course of action is to appeal, we believe we have a very strong case, the attorney agrees with us, and therefore we will appeal,” HTC’s chief financial officer Winston Yung told The Wall Street Journal on Monday. On Friday, a U.S. ITC judge said that HTC was guilty of infringing on two of Apple’s patents that cover a “system and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data,” and a “real-time signal processing system for serially transmitted data.” Apple originally filed the complaint last year, and HTC has filed its own lawsuit against Apple ...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4
According to results from a new ChangeWave survey released on Monday, 48% of those looking to buy a new smartphone during the next 90 days plan on buying an iPhone. In addition, 46% of those buying a smartphone in the next 90 days said that they would prefer an iOS-powered device, 32% want a smartphone running Android, and just 4% want a BlackBerry OS device. Apple’s iOS users are the most satisfied with their operating system, too. 70% of those surveyed said that they were “very satisfied” with iOS. 50% said they were very satisfied with Android, 27% were happy with Microsoft’s Windows OS (which we assume means both Windows Mobile and Windows Phone), and 26% were pleased with RIM’s BlackBer...

Apple to Sell Contract-Free iPhone for $350?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 3GS
Apple is reportedly launching a contract-free iPhone this year for the low price of $350. Typically, an out-of-contract iPhone model fetches anywhere between $600-700, so this is a pretty big deal for those who want the Apple smartphone without the burden of signing a contract. Last month, Apple decided to start selling the iPhone 4 contract-free in the U.S., so it’s nice to see a less expensive option possibly on the horizon.
According to BGR, an off-contract or prepaid iPhone might be the iPhone 3GS. If there is plenty of stock left over, this makes sense, although users will be limited to only 8GB of storage space if we’re talking about the current 3GS model being sold by AT&T.

If you’ve been dying to get in on the Verizon 4G LTE network but haven’t had it in your home town, you’ll be happy to know that Big Red will be bringing this blazing-fast mobile data network to 28 more markets this week.
With devices like the Droid Charge, LG Revolution, HTC Thunderbolt and a variety of hotspots and USB dongles, there are multiple ways to take advantage of the Verizon 4G LTE network. While we’re not in love with how these smartphones perform when it comes to battery life, we are happy to report that 4G LTE is the real deal. I’ve used this to upload pictures and videos from a moving taxi before and it rocks.

PlayStation 4 Concept Design, Edgy and Eco-Friendly
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 4
Recent reports suggest that Sony’s PlayStation 4 may already be in the works with suppliers revealing that production could start by the end of 2011 with Foxconn and Pegatron at the helm of assembly. In the wake of the PlayStation Network disaster, many believe that Sony will need the PS4 to turn things around ASAP. But what might the PS4 look like?
Designer Joseph Dumary has conjured up a very futuristic-looking PS4 concept that’s also very eco-friendly—but what design concepts aren’t these days? He imagines the new console to be composed of 60% recyclable materials, to use 0 watts during standby mode, and to have a ECO Restart function that saves games, turns off the console, and can resum...

Microsoft looking for an engineer to help with top secret project
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Sometimes the job listing that big companies post like Microsoft and others can give hints of what the company is working on. Often they start looking for key employees and engineers for specific functions before a project gets underway. A recent job listing from Microsoft that tipped up over the weekend is looking for an engineer.
The engineer is for a “top secret” project that the Windows Phone 7 team is working on. What is that project? The job listing doesn’t say, but the listing notes that the project is a v1 feature set with planning for the features to be complete in the next month. The listing for the job states that the mission of the project is to “GO BIG! DISRUPT THE MARKET!” WinR...

Orange UK offers daily 30MB for £3 roaming option for fee weary travelers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Orange
Oh Orange UK customers, you lucky dogs, your carrier is giving you a bit of a break as we enter globe-trotting season. No longer are you chained to absurd per-MB roaming charges or unnecessary monthly plans. Instead, you can shell out £3-a-day (about $5) for 30MB of data -- which is plenty for checking e-mail and doing some light browsing. If you don't use any data then you don't get charged (sweet!), but go over that limit and you're back to the normal £3.07-per-MB rate (not so sweet). It's a perfect option for the traveler who only spends a week or two abroad at a time, and it closes the gap with fellow UK provider Vodafone, which offers a £2-per-day, 25MB option. Now, if only others (espe...

Amazon UK Drops Apple Pricing Across The Board
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleAmazon
Apple has a lot of rumored revamps coming up, including new MacBook Airs, new Apple TVs, and even new LED Cinema Displays. This could mean a lot of the older models will start to be discounted, which could be partly why Amazon UK has just dropped pricing across the board for almost all of their Apple products.
As of this writing, a search for Apple products on Amazon UK reveals many Apple products with prices cut back, even if only by a few British pounds. Considering the exchange rate, however, that translates to quite a bit more in savings when it comes to US dollars.

Ubisoft follows EA's $10 Online Pass with 'Uplay Passport'
Like UnlikeUbisoft has announced plans to ship its future games with a control scheme that will make it impossible for second-hand titles to access online content without paying a fee. Called Uplay Passport, the software will accompany most of the studio's titles starting with Driver: San Francisco, which is due on August 30 in North America.
Games that come with the Uplay Passport will have a single-use registration code that provides access to online content and features, including "bonus content," "exclusive offers," and of course, multiplayer. Folks who purchase a pre-owned game with Uplay Passport will have to pay $9.99 for a new registration code to unlock that material.
