Xbox 360 system update is preparation for a system update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX 360
Microsoft has rolled out a fairly meaty Xbox 360 system update today, although no matter how hard you look, there's nothing new to be found.
That's because this update, which takes around five minutes to download and complete (on a superfast broadband connection), merely sets up your console for new features to come later.
One of those is expected to be Avatar Kinect, part of the Kinect Fun Labs, which allows you to take part in forthcoming, multiple themed virtual chat rooms using your Avatar as your in-room persona. The mouth of your graphical double even moves as you speak.
It will be launching this month, and although no specific date has been mentioned so far, the smart money is on next...

Former Engadget Editor Reveals New Tech Site Will Be Called 'The Verge'
Like UnlikeFormer Engadget editor Joshua Topolsky announced Monday night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon that his new tech site, currently operating as This Is My Next, will be called "The Verge."
"Why the Verge, you ask?" Topolsky wrote in a blog post. "Well put simply, I don't think a single idea better defines the news we cover or the way we cover it. Everything we think about, talk about, and dream about is on the brink, the cutting edge… the verge. Even when we're looking at or reviewing familiar products, our angle is not just about what technology means now, but what it means up ahead. Our goal is to communicate what the complex and sometimes confusing roadmap for the future looks like in unders...

Samsung denies granting Anymode Smart Case approval amid Apple copy accusations
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
Samsung has denied certifying the contentious Anymode folding Smart Case for the Galaxy Tab, and has had the Apple-alike product pulled from the retailer’s site. According to Samsung, Anymode was not granted “Designed for Samsung Mobile” certification, and the companies are now working “to address this oversight.”
In the meantime, the case has been taken offline, and Samsung is keen to point out that none were actually sold. “As a general practice,” the company’s official blog states, “Samsung Electronics reviews and approves all accessories produced by partners.”
Anymode’s Smart Case for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 made headlines yesterday given its distinct similarity to the Apple Smart Cover offe...

Toshiba faces up to second buggy tablet launch
Toshiba has acknowledged a bug plaguing its just launched Thrive 7-inch Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablet. As Electronista reported on Sunday, the company’s user forums have been hit by a raft of user complaints about the issue. Toshiba says that it is working on a fix for the bug, which is causing its Thrive tablets not to wake up from sleep mode.
"We're aware of the issue and are working on a fix," a Toshiba spokesman said in an e-mail to PC World. While the spokesman was unable to provide an estimated timeframe for when the fix might arrive, he confirmed that it would be delivered via Toshiba’s Service Station pre-loaded application.

Apple reveals 1 billion customers have entered its retail stores
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple has confirmed that more than one billion shoppers have passed the thresholds of its retail stores around the world, inadvertently making it clear that it has counted anybody and everybody that enters its shops.
The Rain Man-style admission means that every time you enter an Apple Shop, Apple knows about it.
Perhaps that's not altogether surprising; most shops probably do have tools in place to count footfall, but we wonder how many of those billion visitors are actually Apple customers.
Technological tourists
Whenever we've ventured into Apple Stores, they're always chock full of people using the free internet or taking incredibly unflattering pictures of themselves in PhotoBooth, with...

Nokia C3-01.5 leaks with 1GHz processor, might chart the future of Series 40
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAC3-01.5
The Nokia C3-01.5 might have one of the most unusual names in Nokia's lineup, but it will surprise you with more than just a name. This candy bar handset doesn't look any different than the C3 Touch and Type, but it sports a powerful 1GHz chip and 512MB of RAM, and might be the blueprint for future Series 40 devices. Yes, we're no less confused than you to see a 1GHz chip for Series 40 and the relatively small 2.4-inch capactive ClearBlack screen of the device, given that even Nokia's N8 has a 680MHz processor, but that's exactly what the C3-01.5 seems to offer.
Judging by the name, it might not be exactly a final unit yet, but there are similar models expected in Nokia's pipeline. The C2-01...

Pricing and carrier availability for the R have yet to be announced.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS updated with enhanced attachment support
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
Earlier today the RIM’s tablet, the BlackBerry PlayBook, was updated to OS 1.0.7. It’s not quite as significant as the last update, but there are a few new features, mostly surrounding file attachments. Now files can be saved to your BlackBerry smartphone over Bridge in addition to locally on the tablet. The PlayBook can also read ZIP files, which is great for folks who regularly deal with batches of compressed files as e-mail attachments. There are a few other minor changes, like portrait orientation in the pictures app, pinching to zoom in videos, and a new airplane mode option. There’s also a whole range of new languages supported, ranging from Russian to Bahasa Indonesian.

LG Optimus 3D getting the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update in October
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsLGGoogleAndroid 2.3Optimus 3D
British version of the LG Optimus 3D won’t get the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update before October. We’ve no idea what’s wrong here since by that time Google may easily launch the latest version of Android – Ice Cream Sandwich. The good news, however, is that LG’s forthcoming update will also come with some special features, custom-made to take advantage of the 3D screen. As a result, once the Optimus 3D gets that new software, 2D to 3D conversion will be possible on the fly for applications and games as long as they [apps and games] are based on OpenGL. Kinda neat though I’m not sure that justifies waiting for October, especially when we know that the competing product (HTC Evo 3D) offers the...

BlackBerry PlayBook update brings ZIP file support, other features

RIM has just released an update to the BlackBerry Tablet OS that runs on the BlackBerry PlayBook. The update adds improved attachment support and new multimedia options to the platform.
Version 1.0.7 of the BlackBerry Tablet OS offers improved connectivity and attachment support for the BlackBerry Bridge application that links BlackBerry smartphones to the PlayBook. Users can now access ZIP files that are attached to emails, and extract and view the contents on their PlayBooks. The files themselves are stored on the SD card inside the BlackBerry smartphone, so when the phone is disconnected from the PlayBook, no files remain on the tablet.
Additionally, the pictures app now supports portrai...

Apple has reportedly scheduled overnights for Tuesday night in preparation for the OS X Lion launch. According to 9to5 Mac, Apple Store outlets are already equipped with hard drives to quickly install Lion on the show floor computers, and the stores have been sent new posters to outfit the walls with advertisements for the new operating system. Apple is also expected to refresh the MacBook Air in the imminent future. We’re expecting the new notebooks to pack the Thunderbolt I/O port in place of DisplayPort, Intel’s new Sandy Bridge processors, and a backlit keyboard.

MasterCard, Visa, American Express Join Isis
Like UnlikeIsis today announced that Visa, MasterCard, and American Express have joined the Isis mobile payment network, enabling compatibility with most major credit cards and payment networks. Discover was already a founding member of Isis. Isis is a joint venture of AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA, and Verizon Wireless, established to enable ubiquitous mobile payments. Isis will compete, to an extent, with Google Wallet, which is currently aligned with Sprint. MasterCard is presently the only payment network participating in both Google Wallet and Isis. Isis, much like Google Wallet, will be based on NFC-enabled phones that can simply be tapped on a store terminal to pay, and will include support for me...

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro visits FCC on its way to the U.S. market?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony EricssonXperia mini pro
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro is at the FCC’s labs where the government-employed engineers are testing it to make sure levels of radiation are safe for the general public use. Then, once the FCC folks give it its seal of approval, the device will be ready to be sold on the U.S. soil. However, just because some phone has the FCC certificate, it doesn’t mean anyone will offer that device. We’ve seen few Japanese handsets “clearing” their way to the U.S. market but never actually hitting the store shelves. Will the Xperia Mini Pro share the same “destiny”? It’s unclear though common sense tells us that the Swedish-Japanese company wants to push its baby to the large U.S. market. The questio...

“We’re going to come out with a great story this fall around 4G, and it’ll all become clear,” Hesse told Engadget.

ChevronWP7 Labs to unlock your Windows Phone 7 handset for $9, hackers not welcome
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Need a little extra unlocked WP7 incentive to keep you from buying those oh-so-distracting iOS and Android devices? Well, that official homebrew love is going to cost you -- $9 to be exact. We already knew the Microsoft-sanctioned ChevronWP7 Labs would be open for business soon, but recent tweets from the jailbreaking outfit's Chris Walsh have shed a little more light on the process. In addition to the nominal fee users will have to fork over for the official unlock, Walsh also points out that software updates to Mango and Nodo will close any security holes in the platform. So, if you were planning on getting your pirate-y hands dirty hacking away at WP7, think again -- Microsoft's still got...
