Updated Netflix applications brings unofficial support to Honeycomb
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 3.0
Netflix recently updated it Android application to support a whopping 24 devices now. Oh, that’s not that much. Still, the application that debuted with support of only five handsets is expanding its reach and you can stream video on some devices that aren’t even officially supported, including Honeycomb tablets.
The updated Netflix app works on the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 but we had no luck with the Toshiba Thrive. While it’s not a Honeycomb tablet, Netflix works just as well on the EVO View 4G, too. We can likely thank the new Lenovo IdeaPad K1 for this new-found unofficial support, as the devices are the first Honeycomb tablets that are Netflix certified out of the gate....

Amazon's Petition Successful, California Voters Can Overturn Online Sales Tax Law
Like UnlikeFiled in: Amazon
It will be up to California residents to decide whether or not Amazon and other online retailers will have to collect sales tax in their state. According to the Associated Press, the California Attorney General's Office approved Amazon's petition for a referendum that will give voters the chance to overturn a new controversial law that altered what it means to have a physical presence in the state.
The next step for Amazon is to collect 505,000 signatures from registered voters living in California so that the referendum can be included on the next ballot. Amazon has until September 27th to secure the necessary John Hancocks, and if Amazon is able to do that, California would be forced to su...

Is Asus Expecting a Slowdown in 3Q11 Motherboard Sales?
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotherboardsASUS
Perhaps Asus knows something the rest of the industry isn't aware of yet, or maybe the company is reacting to recent news of AMD delaying its Bulldozer processor launch. Either way, it appears Asus isn't ultra-confident in there being a high demand for motherboards in the third quarter and has reportedly asked its parts and component suppliers to only ship enough materials to produce between 1 million and 1.5 million motherboards.
That's down significantly from the 2.5 million units ordered for the May-June period, says news and rumor site DigiTimes, which is getting its information from "sources at downstream suppliers." Asus shipped around 11.4 million motherboards in the first half of 201...

Microsoft Explorer Touch Mouse coming in September for $49.95
Like UnlikeFiled in: Mouse DevicesMicrosoftExplorer Touch
It's already been rather unceremoniously leaked, but now the Microsoft Explorer Touch Mouse is all sorts of official. Granted, it's kinda tough to get excited about a mouse, but Redmond's latest pointer is actually pretty neat. It sports BlueTrack Technology for getting your double click on while using your jeans or carpet as a mouse pad, and a haptic scroll strip that lets you feel the speed at which you're flicking through the web. Oh, and that strip lets you scroll both horizontally and vertically -- not bad for $49.95. Microsoft even claims it can last 18-months on a single set of batteries, just long enough to forget this wireless mouse even has a set of DC cells inside. Check out the e...

Roku 2 HD, XD, and XS officially launch: same price, smaller size and Angry Birds
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersRoku2 HD2 XD2 XS
Roku has gone from a barely known streaming media box manufacturer to a retail darling in a remarkably short amount of time (the last hardware revamp launched less than a year ago) and it's back with more new hardware to continue the assault. The Roku 2 lineup will put their (much smaller) footprint in the spaces left by their predecessors when they hit shelves later this month without changing the price one bit. Besides being more energy efficient, it brings new channels including Angry Birds, Epix, MLS and more, while also upgrading the Netflix experience with support for subtitles, surround sound and 1080p video. The pricing tiers of $60 (HD), $80 (XD) and $100 (XS) remain; while stepping...

Asus updates Xtion Pro motion sensor, makes it even more like Kinect
Like UnlikeFiled in: ASUS
Remember the Xtion Pro and Wavi Xtion motion sensors that Asus showed off at CES? Well, fast-forward six months and there's already an updated model on the market: the Windows- and Linux-compatible Xtion Pro Live. The new version complements the original's IR and depth sensors with a Kinect-like VGA webcam and a pair of microphones, while also jacking up the bill to a distinctly un-Kinect-like 175 Euros ($300). That price tag won't make us shift our living room furniture around anytime soon, especially since Kinect is already officially heading to the PC. However, that isn't really the point: the Pro Live edition is primarily meant to help developers design better games and apps for the more...

Cisco, RIM and the Lure of the Consumer Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: CiscoRIM BlackBerry
What is it about the mass-market consumer space that attracts so many business-savvy companies and ultimately hobbles or even dooms them? There are companies, like Apple, that obviously understand consumers and consumer marketing strategy and then there are companies like Cisco and Research in Motion (RIM), which clearly do not.
News that Cisco is laying off almost 9% of its workforce is black mark for CEO John Chambers, a man whom leaders at smaller companies have all but worshipped. I don't know for certain that the cuts will come primarily in Cisco's consumer business, but the missteps that have led up to this news have been in the consumer space.
Cisco and RIM's travails are most interes...
