Google to offer Pottermore ebooks
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Pottermore and Google have joined forces to sell the Harry Potter ebooks via the Google eBooks platform.
Still a US-only service, Google eBooks will allow Potter fans to buy the ebooks from Google and store them in their Google Books libraries.
Through the magic of cloud computing, they can then access the books on other ereader platforms.
Buying tomes through Google eBooks is a US only privilege at the moment, but should be coming to the UK at some point and bringing the Harry Potter franchise with it - unfortunately there's no scheduled release date just yet.
Google casts its spell
It's been a long time coming, but fans of the boy wizard will finally be able to access his story in ebook fo...

Intel delivers record earnings yet again in Q2 -- let the boardroom bragging begin
Like UnlikeFiled in: Intel
We know, you've heard it all before, but the chip maker's once again reporting record revenues, reaching a whopping $13.1 billion in Q2 2011. If you're keeping track, that's up $2.3 billion, or 22 percent, from Q2 2010, and bests last quarter's earnings of $12.9 billion by 2 percent. Net income was up 10 percent year-over-year, but down three percent from last quarter, ringing in at $3.2 billion. As Intel humbly points out, this is the outfit's fifth consecutive quarter of record revenue. So, perhaps a little bit of gloating is in order.

Dell Venue Pro firmware update silences WiFi woes
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesDellVenue Pro
We wouldn't say it was delivered with lightning speed, but Dell's firmware update for the Venue Pro is at least on schedule. The outfit's Lionel Menchaca tweeted that the refresh, which brings a fix for a WiFi lockup issue (among others), "starts rolling out today for T-Mobile customers in the US + all other customers outside the US." Unfortunately for AT&T customers sporting this pro phone, it looks like you'll be left in the firmware lurch a bit longer --- there's been no mention of a similar update for Ma Bell.

The LS5 has a 26mm wide-angle lens and 5x optical zoom, and can be run on a set of AA batteries, but still manages to record 720p 30fps HD video and include optical image stabilization.

HTC Flyer 2 to rock 3D screen, dual cameras?
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHTC
File this under rumors, but it’s pretty likely what you see above is part of the rear shell of the upcoming HTC Flyer 2. Of course we have no other information except the image above to prove that claim, but it kinda makes sense HTC would want to make the next Flyer much better than what we have today. And besides, the Taiwanese company is already offering a 3D-enabled smartphone, Evo 3D, so they have the technology needed to make this happen. Check out the original Flyer‘s back for comparison.

Cisco to cut 6,500 jobs to boost profits
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cisco
Cisco announced on Tuesday that it will layoff 9% of its workforce, or 6,500 jobs, in an effort to boost profits. That figure is lower than original speculation that the company would cut 10,000 employees. Cisco made the move as part of an effort to cut $1 billion in annual costs while spurring profit growth, Bloomberg reported. 2,100 of the 6,500 employees have agreed to an early-retirement program. Additionally, Cisco plans to sell a Juarez, Mexico-based manufacturing facility to Foxconn. The move will transfer 5,000 workers elsewhere but will not result in job cuts. Earlier this year, the company laid-off 550 additional employees when it announced that it was killing off its Flip camera a...

T-Mobile announces new Value plans; to be available July 24
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-Mobile
Remember when T-Mobile quietly pulled the plug on its Even More Plus plans? That was a pretty solid reason for us to believe that something new was coming down the road bound to replace them. Well, it seems like our assumptions were really onto something as the new T-Mobile Value plans have just been made official.
Unlike the case was with the Even More Plus offerings, T-Mobile Value plans will be tied to a 2-year contract so bear that in mind if you are not much into commitment. However, the purchase of a brand new smartphone is not necessary – just bring your own handset and switch over to a Value plan of a caliber that suits you most. Nevertheless, if you have been thinking of getting a n...

ZTE aims to "become a household name", starts selling direct to users
Like UnlikeFiled in: ZTE
It’s a story that many who are familiar with the wireless industry have heard time and time again. Asian companies like HTC, Huawei, and ZTE start out as mere handset makers who supply devices to operators who then go on and slap their logo on the bodies of said devices, along with a slew of their own operator branded software, but then after a few years of doing this said Asian companies want to branch out and start selling straight to consumers. First it was HTC, who many knew as the number one ODM (original design manufacturer) for Windows Mobile smartphones, transitioning into what’s now one of the top Android vendors currently on the market. Then it was Huawei, who was and is now becomi...

Samsung Omnia 7 running out of stock in UK
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungOmnia 7
We all know a new wave of Windows Phone 7 handsets are coming, and in fact we have seen the Samsung i937 shown off already. We do not however know how soon, and most of us I expect believe it will be September at the earliest.
In the mean time carriers will have to sell existing handsets, and we are now recieving reports that stocks of the Samsung Omnia 7, the most attractive Windows Phone 7 handset internationally, are running low. Samsung’s own website shows O2, Carphone warehouse, 3, Orange and Phones4U are already out of stock, and our tipster tells us, contrary to Samsung’s chart, T-Mobile UK is also saying they have run out of Omnia 7s and will not be ordering any more.

Motorola’s Attempt To Delay Microsoft’s ITC Complaint Has Been Denied
Like UnlikeFiled in: Motorola
Motorola just got a blow from its legal department. Motorola and Microsoft are fighting over their patents in court, Microsoft made a complaint against Motorola to ITC to ban its products in US. Fearing over Microsoft’s patents Motorola Mobility attempted to delay the Microsoft’s ITC Complaint hearing against it, but they were denied today. So we may find the first round result of this case soon, this is similar to Apple’s recent win over HTC over patent infringements. If Microsoft wins the case, Motorola can no longer sell its devices in US.
My quick tip to Motorola Mobility to avoid the case: Make a strategic partnership with Microsoft to make Windows Phone devices leaving the most IP viol...

Samsung Galaxy S II coming next month
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S II
While we were just wondering what’s the holdup with the Samsung Galaxy S II in the United States, a Samsung executive said that we could be seeing this superphone as early as next month.
“We expect to release the Galaxy S2 in the U.S. market sometime in August,” said Shin Jong-kyun, president of Samsung’s mobile business and digital imaging, according to Yonhap.
The Samsung Galaxy S II is expected to follow its predecessor by coming to all four major carriers and we’ve even seen the brand names leak. Samsung might be taking a bit more time with these to add some more features or to ensure that it can use its own dual-core chip exclusively.

MTA expected to approve Grand Central Apple Store next week
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
We’ve been hearing reports that Apple would open the world’s largest Apple Store on one of New York City’s Grand Central terminal balconies since February of this year. Despite a report in May that the plan had been nixed, the dream of a 15,000 square foot store could finally become a reality. According to The New York Times, The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) board is expected to approve Apple’s bid later this week during a monthly board meeting. Apple really knew how to woo the MTA, too: buried deep in the article was a discussion about how the iPhone maker submitted its bid for the spot in “linen-lined boxes, as if it were a wedding present to transit officials.” We expect to hear m...

Virgin Mobile US has started offering the Motorola Triumph, a mid-range model that is perfect for those who don't like to get tied up with a two-year contract. Nokia Australia’s most trusted technology brand
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIA
A survey of Australian brands by the Readers Digest has found Nokia is one of the most trusted brands in Australia, ahead of technology brands like Apple, Samsung or HTC for example.
While the company is is a challenging position at the moment, in particular due to its own leap of faith to Windows Phone 7, this trust may ease the transition from the estwhile dominant Symbian smartphone OS to their new products starting later this year and continuing in force in 2012.
Microsoft is counting on Nokia moving much of their former Symbian users to Windows Phone 7 to bring much-needed volume to the Windows Phone 7 ecosystem and make it a viable third smartphone player. Analysts have agreed that thi...
