LulzSec decides not to publish News International emails

Posted on Jul 22, 2011 by MG1

Notorious hacking group LulzSec has said it won't publish the 4GB of emails it is alleged to have acquired when it hacked thesun.co.uk earlier this week.
LulzSec claims to have taken the emails from The Sun's servers and that they could contain evidence pertinent to the ongoing News of the World phone hacking cases.
LulzSec had promised to publish the emails over the course of the week, but a tweet sent from a spokesperson for the group today reads, "We think, actually we may not release emails from The Sun, simply because it may compromise the court case."

Global hacker collective “Anonymous Operations” together with “Lulz Security” on Thursday issued a statement to the FBI and other international authorities. The release is a response to statements made by FBI Director Steve Chabinsky tied to the recent arrest of 14 individuals with suspected ties to the hacker group. ”We want to send a message that chaos on the Internet is unacceptable, Chabinsky told NPR in a recent interview. “[Even if] hackers can be believed to have social causes, it’s entirely unacceptable to break into websites and commit unlawful acts.” Anonymous did not mince words in its response. “These governments and corporations are our enemy. And we will continue to fight them,...

Continued strong sales of Apple’s blockbuster smartphone have propelled the Cupertino-based company into the No. 1 spot globally. As noted by the Financial Times, Apple shipped 20.34 million iPhone handsets last quarter, up from 18.7 million units in the first quarter of 2011. Meanwhile Nokia’s smartphone shipments dropped from 24.2 million units in the first quarter to just 16.7 million smartphones in the June quarter — 3.64 million fewer smartphones than Apple. With just two smartphone models currently available for sale, Apple had already been the world’s top smartphone vendor by revenue and profits. The June quarter marks the first time the company has managed to out-sell Nokia by volume...

Europe concerned about LightSquared GPS interference too

It's not just American GPS companies and governments that are concerned about the potential GPS interference from LightSquared's proposed 4G LTE network, as officials in Europe have expressed similar worries.
According to Heinz Zourek, head of the European Commission's industry department, research has revealed that LightSquared's base stations have "considerable potential to cause harmful interference" to the Galileo GPS system that is expected to be operational in Europe and the U.S. by 2014 or 2015. The Galileo system uses the same spectrum as current GPS receivers, which is right next to the spectrum the LightSquared wants to appropriate for its network.

Posted on Jul 22, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft has yet to launch its tablet-optimized operating system and yet slates running various versions of the Windows operating system still managed to outsell Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook last quarter. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics’ latest report, Windows-powered media tablets owned 4.6% of the global market in the second quarter of 2011. In the same period, RIM’s PlayBook made up just 3.3% of the market. The firm also shows that competition may finally be heating up in the tablet space. HTC Desire HD gets a small update (2.50.405.2) that brings "Wi-Fi performance improvements"

Posted on Jul 21, 2011 by MG1

HTC Desire HD is getting a small firmware update as we speak. This “after Gingerbread” firmware changes are said to bring “Wi-Fi performance improvements” though we guess some other things under the hood will be impacted as well. After all, 19.8MB is kinda big download for such a minor improvement (at least the way I see it). Either way, we’ve no idea what’s all included here, but we do suggest you to “push the button” nevertheless and bring your Desire HD’s firmware version to 2.50.405.2. It’s a good practice to have the latest software running on your phone and I don’t see why this should be an exception.
Still this (because it’s a small update) doesn’t mean you shouldn’t backup first. Som...

Anonymous Claims Gigabyte of Stolen NATO Goodies

Anonymous Claims Gigabyte of Stolen NATO Goodies

Posted on Jul 21, 2011 by MG1

Undeterred by a rash of arrests, the hackers at Anonymous are boasting "about one gigabyte" of data from NATO. But they're not going to publish most of it, as it'd be "irresponsible." The rest? "Interesting data," they say.
Attacking NATO seems like an odd choice. Anonymous has very public and very strident sympathies with the Libyan revolution, which would have been crushed long ago had it not been for NATO intervention. So why pick on a group they should ostensibly be gushing over?
Well, for one, it's a governmental alliance, and Anonymous' AntiSec ethos harbors categorical hatred toward government per se. Secondly, they appear miffed by some of NATO's strategic choices—including outsourci...

Nokia profit dives 44% in 'clearly disappointing' Q2

Posted on Jul 21, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop on Thursday best summarized Nokia’s second quarter earnings: “our Q2 results were clearly disappointing.” The Finnish phone vendor saw operating profit slide a worrisome 44% to €391 million in the second quarter, down from 704 million in the first quarter and €660 in the second quarter last year. Revenue dipped 11% sequentially to €9.275 billion and EPS was cut in half to $0.06. Revenue from smartphone sales dropped 33% to €2.368 billion on shipments of 16.7 million units, down 34% from the same quarter in 2010 when Nokia shipped 25.2 million smartphones. Nokia still managed to top Wall Street’s expectations for the quarter, however, thanks to royalties from a patent s...

Dell considering using Google+ Hangouts for customer support

Michael Dell is toying with the idea of using Google+ Hangouts for Dell’s customer support. The service allows users to initiate a video chat session with multiple people inside their Google+ circles. “I am thinking about hangouts for business. Would you like to be able to connect with your Dell service and sale teams via video directly from Dell.com?” he posted on his Google+ page on Sunday. The idea was an instant success: 556 people had given the comment a +1 as of Tuesday morning and hundreds more left comments in support of the suggestion. As GigaOm points out, it is currently not possible to start a “Hangout” session from anywhere but from inside Google+ itself. The social network is s...

HTC Wildfire S heads to T-Mobile, won't break your budget

Posted on Jul 21, 2011 by MG1

Were you disappointed to see the HTC Wildfire S pass through the FCC sporting AT&T-friendly bands, but no apparent magenta love? Well, chin up ol' chum, because a leaked spec sheet over on TmoNews shows T-Mobile's branding all over the budget-friendly phone. The 3.2-inch Android handset will ship with Gingerbread out of the box and, of course, that Sense 2.1 overlay you either love, or love to hate. There's also a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and 512MB of on-board memory. And pay no attention to the apparent PR slip-up above, while there is a UMTS 850 / 1900 variant, we have the FCC filing to prove this little guy's packing AWS 1700 / 2100 bands. Expect to see Tmo's ga...
