Amazon snatches up Kindle related domains, Kindle Air rumors start circulating

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Amazon

Honestly, we're not sure what to make of all the rumors and leaks surrounding Amazon recently. It's safe to assume the company is working on a tablet, and we're long overdue for an update to E-Ink Kindle. But, a recent round of domain registrations has sent the interwebs into a tizzy with some suggesting a new product, dubbed the Kindle Air, is in the pipeline. Though Amazon's name doesn't appear anywhere in the registrant information for Kindleair.com, the name MarkMonitor does -- the firm Bezos and crew just used to register kindlesocialnetwork.com and kindlesocialnetworking.com. Now, companies pickup domains all the time just to protect their brand, and it seems a bit odd that Amazon woul...

Windows 7 will dominate by year's end, Gartner says

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Windows 7 will become the world's most-installed PC operating system by the end of this year, according to a Gartner forecast that sees Linux rising to just 2 percent of desktop share in five years. Meanwhile, Windows is also popular as a development environment, a field in which Linux has slipped to third place behind Mac OS, says Evans Data.
Gartner's Aug. 9 forecast suggests great things are in store for Windows during 2011. But other statements made by the research firm hint that the year could see what amounts to a high water mark for Redmond's well-known operating system.
According to Gartner, 94 percent of new PCs will be shipped with Windows 7 in 2011. By the end of the year, Windows...

Anonymous Vows to 'Destroy' Facebook on Nov. 5

Anonymous Vows to 'Destroy' Facebook on Nov. 5

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Anonymous has vowed to "destroy" Facebook on Nov. 5. Or more accurately, somebody has set up a Twitter account and YouTube channel to announce a plan dubbed "Operation Facebook."
With the loosely affiliated hacktivist collective, it's always tough to know what's real, what's a feint, and what's a solo effort by some ambitious Anon to marshal the troops.
If Operation Facebook is real, it could mark a new phase for Anonymous, which in recent weeks has joined forces with the remnants of the more tightly knit hacker group LulzSec to target law enforcement agencies in an ongoing operation called Antisec.
The "press release" announcing Operation Facebook does tie it in with Antisec, however.

Nintendo “flame red” 3DS coming September 9

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Nintendo keep teasing us with the red 3DS, originally included as part of the pre-launch line-up, and then quietly shelved in favor of the black and blue versions. Now the company has announced that the “flame red” 3DS will go on sale September 9, timed alongside the release of Star Fox 64 3D.
As with the existing 3DS models – after August 12 - the red version will carry the lower $169.99 price tag. Star Fox 64 3D is one of the big-name titles Nintendo hopes will help turn around the 3DS’ fortunes; 830,000 of the handhelds have been sold in the US since its launch, a figure that Nintendo has admitted it is disappointed by. The sudden price cut, so soon after the 3DS went on sale, prompted a...

There have been a multitude of lawsuits against BiTorrent users in the US over the last year, with more than 200,000 people facing court over their alleged dodgy downloading.
According to TorrentFreak, most of the lawsuits released will be settled out of court for a smaller sum of money, but this is still seen as a revenue stream by the music companies.
A similar thing happened in the UK courts earlier this year, with the Ministry of Sound looking to get compensation from thousands of UK file sharers.
