HP permanently drops TouchPad's price by a Benjamin
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
Following this past weekend's sale of the HP TouchPad tablet that took $100 off the sticker price of both the 16GB and 32GB versions (or more if you knew where to look), HP has gone ahead and made the price drop permanent. A message from HP's SVP of the Personal Systems Group in North America Steven DiFranco was sent to retailers informing them of the price drop, and HP's own webstore has relisted the TouchPad at the lower price point.

Samsung Omnia 7 with Mango RTM floating around in the wild
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungOmnia 7
WPSauce have been sent this screen shot of the Samsung Omnia 7 supposedly running Windows Phone 7.5 7720, which is the Release to Manufacturer version of Mango.
The development is either evidence of the OS being hacked into the handset, or of the OS undergoing carrier testing.
I am sure the impatient few would prefer the former, while I am sure most of us just wish the official update would come sooner rather than later.

AT&T Says No LTE Phones Until Close to Year's End
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
Speaking at a tech conference today, AT&T's senior vice president of mobility and consumer markets, Peter Ritcher, said that the company won't have a Long Term Evolution smartphone ready until late in 2011. The company's LTE network is still on track to launch in five markets this summer (Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio), but the first devices able to access the LTE network will be a laptop dongle and mobile hotspot. When Verizon Wireless launched its LTE network in December 2010, it also only provided laptop dongles for access.

Walmart has the Samsung Conquer 4G on pre-order; price is set to free on-contract
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungConquer 4G
Seriously! Who doesn’t love the fact when we see third party sellers offering pre-orders for an upcoming phone, but rather than sticking with the carrier’s original pricing, they simply blow them out of the water?
Well, if you happen to be eying the upcoming Samsung Conquer 4G for Sprint, you might want to check out what Walmart is offering right now. Specifically, they already have the 4G WiMAX enabled smartphone up for pre-order, but more importantly, early adopters choosing to side with the retailer are going to be knocked out by its sticker price.

Nokia withholding N9 from UK as well
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9
It was revealed yesterday that as per Nokia's new plans to go all-in on Windows Phone in the U.S., it would not be bringing the recently announced MeeGo-powered N9 to American shores. While this made a bit of sense for the U.S. market, it is now believed that Nokia will do the same for the UK, though the UK has been much more supportive of Nokia smartphones in the past.

Apple looks to Samsung as LG fails to meet iPad 2 display demands, report claims
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungLGAppleiPad 2
Apple will turn to Samsung and Chimei Innolux to supply display panels for its iPad 2 after LG’s panels failed to meet Apple’s quality requirements. The quality issues with LG’s displays forced the company to miss its July monthly shipment goal by 1 million units, DigiTimes said. Reportedly, LG’s LCD backlight units failed during Apple’s drop tests. LG had hoped to ship 4 million LCD units per month during the third quarter, but only shipped an estimated 2.5-2.6 million units in July. Samsung, by comparison, provided the Cupertino-based firm with two million displays, or twice its monthly average. Chimei Innolux shipped 450,000 units during the month and the company has a new monthly shipmen...

Intel Creates $300 Million Fund to Make Ultrabooks
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksIntel
There's a new segment of portable PCs coming soon, and they're called Ultrabooks. Intel took the wraps off of the design direction at Computex 2011 for exceptionally thin-and-light notebooks that take many design cues from Apple's MacBook Air.
Asus and Acer have already announced Ultrabook products, and there will be plenty more coming because Intel is pushing hard for the growth of this new segment that the chip giant believes will be 40 percent of the consumer laptop market segment by the end of 2012.

New Panasonic Toughbook S10 Will Take Whatever You Can Dish Out, For a Price
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksPanasonicToughbook S10
Panasonic isn’t the biggest name in laptops these days, except if you are planning on dropping, splashing, or otherwise abusing the daylights out of your machine. In that case, the Toughbook series is right up your alley. And the newest member of the Toughbook family, the S10, won’t force you to make any performance tradeoffs for the tank-like design.

New, Powered-Up USB Spec In Development
Like UnlikeIf you're looking solely at transfer rates, the USB 3.0 specification – with its 5Gbps speeds – may be plenty fast, but it already can't push the same amount of raw data as, say, Thunderbolt. New specifications coming down the pipeline, like SATA Express and external PCIe, are promising speeds that flat-out blow USB 3.0 out of the water. The USB Promoter Group's aiming to stay in the race with an innovative tactic; rather than compete solely with transfer rates, they're also turning the familiar USB connection into the equivalent of a 100W power cord.

Mozilla's MemShrink Program Brings Big Memory Savings To Firefox 7
Like UnlikeSpending time with Firefox is a lot like spending time with your lovable young nieces; usually, everything goes swell and you walk away feeling good, a content smile plastered across your face. But sometimes, they do something so overwhelmingly stupid that you can't help but shake your head and wonder about their future. You may not be able to convince your niece that shoving crap inside electrical sockets is a dumb idea, but Mozilla's tackling its horrifyingly bad memory issues head-on with the MemShrink initiative – and one developer's already reporting outstanding results.
