The new version integrates shaders with atomic counters as well as load, store and atomic read-modify-write operations to a single level of a texture. Additionally, there is support for GPU-tessellated geometry, the modification of an arbitrary subset of a compressed texture without having to re-download the whole texture to the GPU for significant performance improvements, and the ability to pack multiple 8 and 16 bit values into a single 32-bit value for efficient shader processing.
“OpenGL 4.2 has integrated feedback from developers that are shipping significant OpenGL-based applications and games, making for a faster, more capable API which will continue to evolve to meet market needs,” ...

AMD Starts Selling Radeon-branded DDR3 Memory Modules

AMD Starts Selling Radeon-branded DDR3 Memory Modules

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: AMD

At first glance, one would have discarded the news as some company's attempt to use the AMD brand to sell memory modules, but it is indeed AMD selling memory. AMD is selling Radeon-branded DDR3 memory modules to the consumer market, not just OEMs, which were spotted in stores in Japan. AMD is selling certified DDR3 memory in three segments: Entertainment, UltraPro Gaming, and Enterprise. Entertainment deals with DDR3-1333 MHz modules that are best suited for home and business client PCs, UltraPro Gaming deals with DDR3-1600 MHz modules suited for gaming PCs of all shapes and sizes, while Enterprise deals with registered un-buffered DDR3 memory for use in AMD Opteron-driven servers and workst...

Nintendo 3DS could have D-pad issues

Nintendo 3DS could have D-pad issues

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

The Nintendo 3DS woes continue, this time with alleged button warping on the handheld's D-pad. Pictures of the console's controls with peeling paint and buttons that looks like prunes have begun to emerge across the Internet.
The problem began as an apparently isolated issue connected with the type of paint used on the 3DS. Photos of a single 3DS owner's device were posted showing warped buttons and paint. A second set of shots have now arrived that show very similar problems.
This suggests that the paint used on the 3DS could be defective. What is not clear, however, is if the fraying and warping is caused by extremely lengthy periods of playtime, something much more difficult to design a...

Anonymous Hacks Brutal Syrian Military

Anonymous Hacks Brutal Syrian Military

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

The iron-fisted crackdown against Syrian rebels (and civilians) has attracted the vandalizing ire of Anonymous, who've defaced the government's Ministry of Defense site. A superficial hack, but a sign that the collective's got their eye on the country's bloodshed.
The post-hack site, which I'm unable to load at the moment from New York, displayed a message of solidarity for the Syrian uprising in both English and Arabic:

Apple $999 iMac for education on sale: Thunderbolt and Bluetooth MIA

Apple $999 iMac for education on sale: Thunderbolt and Bluetooth MIA

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

As expected, Apple has quietly announced a new iMac variant targeted at education users, bringing the sticker price down to under $1,000. The 3.1GHz iMac uses a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor paired with AMD Radeon HD 6750 256MB graphics and 2GB of memory, and offers a $999 entry point to the 21.5-inch all-in-one desktop machine.
Storage is a conservative 250GB, and there’s a SuperDrive DVD burner though – unlike the refreshed iMac models earlier this year – no Thunderbolt port for high-speed data connectivity. Instead, external displays connect via Mini DisplayPort, as per the last-gen model. You still get a FaceTime HD webcam, stereo speakers, SDXC card reader and all the usual ports, h...

iTunes Replay mired in studio negotiations say sources

iTunes Replay mired in studio negotiations say sources

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

Reports that Apple will imminently offer re-downloads and streaming access to purchased movie and TV show content as part of an iTunes Replay system are premature, new sources have suggested, amid claims that in fact the Cupertino company is yet to secure most of the necessary licensing agreements. So far, deals with at least four of the six top film studios are yet to be inked, CNET‘s sources tell them, leaving an iTunes Replay launch several months off, in all probability.
The reason behind the delay, it’s suggested, is the so-called HBO window, industry shorthand for the electronic distribution period in which HBO has exclusive rights to digital content from 20th Century Focx, Warner Bros...

HP gives $50 app credit to TouchPad early adopters

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsHPTouchPad

Early adopters of HP’s TouchPad tablet have a little less to be upset with after seeing prices drop sharply in recent days. Over the weekend HP announced that qualifying early adopters would receive a $50 credit for use in the App Catalog.
HP has offered multiple price reductions since launching the TouchPad on July 1. The first of several kickbacks came in the form of a $50 rebate through July 31 for loyal buyers. If you could prove ownership of a Palm Pre, Pre Plus, or Pixi phone you qualified for the mail-in rebate on a 32 GB TouchPad.
A $50 price reduction was announced last week followed by a weekend-only additional $50 cut (August 5-7). Additionally, webOSroundup found a $100 Staples c...

Spotify US up to 175K paid members, 1.4m total

Spotify US up to 175K paid members, 1.4m total

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

Leaked figures from Spotify reveal that the company's audience since the US launch has grown rapidly. While it has 1.4 million total members when including the free listeners, it now has 175,000 paying customers, virtually all of which are paying for the $10 a month Premium plan. The figure seen by AllThingsD is more than double the 70,000 claimed roughly two weeks ago.
The growth is likely to change significantly in the next few months and may change the most at the start of 2012, when many of those getting Premium-level access for free on the web are asked to either switch to the limited free version or pay for a more advanced tier. Spotify's conversion rate of free to paid members is lowe...

Lenovo's ThinkPad Tablet visits the FCC, meeting described as business-like

Lenovo's ThinkPad Tablet visits the FCC, meeting described as business-like

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

This isn't a case where an FCC appearance offers our first hint of an imminent release, but those holding out for Lenovo's ThinkPad Tablet instead of the company's more consumer-minded IdeaPad K1 can at least rest assured that things are apparently still on track. The tablet's now officially passed through the FCC, which should be the device's last major stop before its August 23rd release date. Not much else in the way of surprises, as you might expect, but ThinkPad fans do now have some handsome line art to enjoy while they wait for the real thing. Hit the source link below for a bigger version, along with the few other parts of the filing that remain non-confidential.

Apple TV Hacked To Play HTML 5 Games

Apple TV Hacked To Play HTML 5 Games

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

The Apple TV was just recently updated with support for Vimeo and TV show streaming, suggesting that Apple still has many plans for this supposed “hobby” of a product. With the upcoming iOS 5 and the iCloud, it’s likely that Apple TV may tap into these for more functionality later this fall. But for those less patient, you can hack your Apple TV for now to access HTML 5 apps and games.
A hacker installed the Couch Surfer browser on a jailbroken Apple TV and was able to demonstrate an HTML5-based game, Casino BlackJack. Now, the game is fairly bare bones and although it may not be the most impressive of feats, it does remind us of Apple TV’s potential beyond movies and TV shows.

Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and XpanD finally team up for an active 3D glasses standard

Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and XpanD finally team up for an active 3D glasses standard

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

The lack of a universal standard for active shutter 3D glasses became painfully clear during our 3D TV shootout last year, and gave plenty of reasons for buyers to skip the pricey specs altogether. Nine months later we see that LG has jumped onto passive 3D and CEA is playing catch up on the IR glasses problem, but many of the new HDTVs for 2011 are using Bluetooth technology to keep their glasses in sync -- again without any promise of cross-manufacturer compatibility. A day late and a few dollars short, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and universal glasses maker XpanD are announcing the "Full HD Glasses Initiative" which should lay down a standard for consumer active shutter glasses to communicat...
