Acer Notebook Aspires for MacBook Air-like Proportions
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAcerApple
Thin and light notebooks inevitably draw comparisons to Apple's MacBook Air, and you can probably expect a lot more of that once Ultrabooks emerge, at least at first. Part of the reason probably has to do with there not being a ton of pancaked proportioned notebooks. Intel aims to change the mobile landscape with its Ultrabook concept, and it looks as though Acer is itching to get started.

Microsoft Squashes 20-Year-Old 'Ping of Death' Bug
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Perhaps motivated by Duke Nukem Forever shipping after a decade-and-a-half of development and delays, Microsoft decided to finally patch a vulnerability dating back to the 1990s. Included in yesterday's Patch Tuesday bulletin bonanza is a little nugget listed as CVE-2011-1871, which according to ComputerWorld.com is a fix for the dreaded 'Ping of Death,' or at least it was dreaded some two decades ago.

IBM Sinks Blue Waters Supercomputer Project
Like UnlikeFiled in: IBM
Quick, someone assemble an eight-man band like the one that played during the Titanic's final moments above water. The National Center for Supercomputing Applications' Blue Waters project is sinking fast now that IBM has abandoned ship, leaving NCSA on its own to build a sustained petascale supercomputer. IBM and NCSA didn't have any kind of falling out, it just turned out to be more expensive than either side anticipated.

Samsung Galaxy R Announced - A Tegra 2 Smartphone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy R
Earlier this year while at MWC, Anand and I broke news of a Samsung Galaxy phone with Tegra 2 inside. At the time, we assumed it was a Galaxy S2 variant, the GT-I9103. At the time, the suspicion was that either Samsung was preparing a Tegra 2 variant in case Exynos yields weren't good enough, or that it was a cheaper regional variant for some markets. Since then, we've seen Galaxy S2's international launch come and go, with no Tegra 2 variant.

Hulu goes international, will launch in Japan later this year
Like UnlikeRumors of international expansion seem to follow every streaming media company and Hulu has finally revealed plans to launch in Japan later this year. There's not many details, but it appears the free side is staying home in favor of a Hulu Plus-only approach with plans to bring "premium feature films and TV shows" to PCs, TVs, phones and tablets. That it's also avoiding a direct confrontation with Netflix across borders is also notable, as the other major all you can eat video service focuses on Latin America and Europe. Interested parties can sign up for updates at Hulu.jp, but how many yen they may have to spend is as much of a mystery as who is going to be Hulu's lucky new owner.

HDI 3D to ship new line of 3D projectors next year, we mortgage our homes
Like UnlikeFiled in: Projectors
We were pretty impressed when we got the chance to gaze at HDI 3D's silky smooth, 43-inch 3D LCD last year, which is why our eyes widened when the company announced that it's begun producing a new line of 3D projectors, slated for release as early as 2012. First up in the awkwardly named Laser-Driven 2D/3D Switchable Dynamic Video Projector series is the LSS Pro 1 (pictured above) -- a tank that's powered by as many as two Laser-Drive Engines and capable of displaying both 2D and 3D images on HDI's 300 inch Laser Silver Screen.

Runco Announces the LS-1 DLP Projector
Like UnlikeFiled in: ProjectorsRuncoLightStyle LS-1
Runco is known for their high-quality projectors - a factor that tends to reflect in the cost. The LS-1 is a bit different though. That's not to say it's not a quality projector, but at $3,995 it's affordable to those that normally wouldn't be able to swing a Runco. The newest in the LightStyle series, the LS-1 offers a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and uses technologies like SuperOnyx, Constant Contrast and ViVix digital video processing to achieve deep black levels. It utilizes the ISF calibration suite which allows the projector to be customized for the room.

It includes an ATX motherboard targeting the home/gamer PC market, the A55F-A, a micro-ATX board targeting HTPCs, the A55F-M2, and another one targeting office desktops, the A55F-M3. It is not going to happen. Engadget asked Nokia for the US release details and got a response that said that Nokia decided not to ship the Nokia N9 in the United States.
As Nokia is not standing behind MeeGo, it is anyway for the best. It would be just a distraction to buy the Nokia N9. It has no future. It could have a bright future, but Nokia is going with Microsoft Windows Phone OS. We will see how that turns out.
The Nokia N9 has a touchscreen only design without the typical home button. The ...
